Thank you ladies, this is extremely helpful! I love Amaranth and has beautiful Hot Biscuits last year (and yes with the flea beetles 😅). This year, all my Amaranth was a bust! But-since I have just over 60 days left in my season, I think I’ll start more. Thank you!
It always amazes me how quickly the flea beetles find the amaranth each year! 😂 Sorry to hear your amaranth planting did not turn out this year! Yes, I would see if you can get some blooms before your first frost. As we mentioned in the video, the typical days to maturity is 65 to 75, however the plants do tend to bloom more readily when the days are shorter. Even if it does not turn out, at least you tried! Thank you for this. I actually was hoping you would cover amaranthus. I was looking at mine, last week which is 10 foot tall. I direct seeded back at the end of May, it was easy and they look great. Had I this information prior I would have not thinned them out as much! Now I know, and they will still be fun.

I was wondering if mixing the different kinds of plants would grow hybrid plants with less desirable traits?. In addition if anyone would consider sending me some of their seeds if I mailed a return envelope it would be a blessing! In exchange for your efforts I could mail one of my handcrafted gemstone rings.

@LayneAngelo You are the kind one. I think you and I would get along very well if we lived closer to one another. I do have Amaranth growing in 36 plug trays, almost time to get them in my garden. They are about 6 inches tall. I always learn so much when I each you and Lisa, I I feel ike we are family. Y I u guys are great and I know I'm not the only one who thinks so. Hi ! LayneI , I grew 5' tall wine color from late spring.. pest damage at a minimum. But had a wooly aphid on it.. made a hole in it and white fuzz around it.. I was going to exterminate the bugger bit desided to let it live.. I pulled the stem back and let go and it went flying😆 ☺️The next morning the stem was completely healed up! That happened twice.
I harvested them on Monday with no sign of pests. I cut now because they looked like seeds where ready to start. So pretty..
I am going to plant some seeds and see if they succeed to maturity but frost date in mid Oct. fun crop for sure.
I'm drying about 4 stems upside down, I didn't know they could be dried upright. Thanks for that tip!

Amaranth is the BUSINESS.
One day a few months ago I noticed 2 very tall Red plants in the Middle of my neighbors backyard, a few weeks later I noticed 2 of the same plants in my backyard & after some searching I found out they’re Amaranth. Now I have 8 of them Ranging in size from 1’ to ~8’ tall!!?
I have no idea how they Randomly started growing!!
I am trying globe amaranth next year.
Hello! So happy to hear you will be growing globe amaranth (aka gomphrena) next year 😍 I love their round shape, the color selection, and the fact that they dry so well. Note that gomphrena is in the same family as amaranth, but it has different planting requirements than the amaranth we discussed in this video. Just wanted to mention that to avoid any confusion! I have amaranth pink beauty from baker creek. It is now putting on some bushy looking clusters in the cracks of the branches and now on top. Will those turn into seeds that are edible? If it’s pink beauty why are the clusters beige and not pink? Random, I know. Thank you!!!

Two years in a row my amaranthus wont grow more than 8 inches high. Tightly spaced in heavy heavy clay. .
The lime green is a total fail.
The few planted near the house grow larger....
Second year for me and Im in the middle of nowhere and cant afford to haul better soil.
It will take time to improve my heavy clay and I plan to dig in straw this fall
Just a thought…if you haven’t incorporated aged leaves, I know Lisa recommends them highly. They are literally nature’s way of self-fertilizing and soil building. It’s such a brilliant cycle. Break them down by mowing, etc. and lay them on the soil. You can mulch pretty heavily with shredded leaves. The worms and other creatures will do a lot of the work from there. Clay is good soil as it holds water and nutrients, it usually just needs some organic matter to open up channels for air, and it’s vital to keep it covered. Hope your soil improves!
So sorry to hear about your amaranth struggles! 😩 Yes, organic matter should help to improve your soil over time. It sounds like you are on the right track, although soil improvement can take time. When you are finally able to grow a nice stand of amaranth, it will just look that much prettier to you, knowing how much work it took to get there! Best of luck, and have a lovely day 💚
