Chris. Try this when you are done working with the tractor and grapple. Raise the grapple off the ground approximately 1foot and open the top half a foot or so. Turn the engine off, then turn the key back on to run position, and then move the control handle through the the full range of control options for the grapple. The grapple should settle to the ground and the top grab arm should fall to the closed position.Turn off the key. At that point the oil pressure in the lines should be relieved and you can disconnect the fittings by hand.
I bet when you got off the tractor with the first log you was thinking please don't tip up when I get off 😂 I still do and I been around tractors all my life. Your learning well with it Chris thank you for sharing 👍

Of course I was entertained, full of surprises, like when you bent down and got your mug in front of the camera, laugh out loud stuff. Have a good day
Chris...Get a HD box scraper and then drape your sausage weights over it. They will be easy to put on and take off and the box scraper will give you the extra weight you need. Not to mention a box scraper is a must have attachment...in my opinion. Dave
Chris I couldn't remember if you had your rear tires filled or not. If you haven't filled them I cannot tell you how much more stable your tractor will be with the tires filled. That would give you all the extra rear ballast you would need. All your light loader work you wouldn't need any ballast. Filling the rear tires was the first accessory I bought for my tractor. I don't regret it at all.
I’ve had that exact grapple for 4 years now and they are indistructable. My best friend bought a cheaper grapple even after I let him borrow mine and bent it on first log. Sold it and went and got a frostbite
I was entertained and impressed and envy’s now I understand what all the weight is about just like you said. That tractor should do everything you expect from it and more, great job!
Chris when you said you have a grapple, and I said why can't you move your chucks and split pc. of fire wood around, I did not know it was this kind of grapple. I thought it was the kind that had more claws on it so you could grab more wood. Mike Morgan has one like I though you got and he can load a lot of pc. of splits at one time, and still pick up whole logs. Your is more for picking up whole logs. My mistake because this is the first time I saw it in action. Those weights really help in the back. Those logs look pretty bad inside. Good Job Chris. 😉
Those buckets like Mike Morgan has arre called skeleton buckets. They also work for brush, roots and smaller rock removal. They make them with different spacing between the teeth.
looks like your Wiener Weights (tm) did a great job. You can often keep out of the dirt with your grapple by using your curl feature on your front end loader (like you're dumping a bucket) and pick them up from the top using the strength of the hydraulics to pinch the log. Once you get it up, curl back so the weight is resting on the bottom tines for transport. Doesn't work in every situation, but can help pick specific logs/rocks out of a pile and keep from rutting up areas with your tines. ie face opening down, clamp, pick up, roll back, drive away. Good luck with it. They are indeed very handy tools.
Good morning Chris from rainy S. E. Ohio. You're rite, like a child with a new Tonka toy. The more you use grapple the better you'll get the feel of it. Have a wonderful rest of the day
Hey Chris, your buddy at Back 40 is having a little fun showing his weights that he installed on the back of his tractor. I think he is having a little fun at your expense Chris 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Chris when you need to pick up a large log. Pick your grapple straight up and rotate the grapple so the opening is facing the log. Go straight down an grab the log. That is an easier way to do it. When you go straight into it on ground level it’s harder sometimes to pick it up.
Good morning Chris. This video by far was one of the most entertaining videos you've made! It will be fun watching you get the hang of your new toy. From what I can see from all the videos I watch is that the operators are afraid to use the throttle. It would be much smoother if the tractor were idled down when loading or unloading the logs. It makes the response of the hydraulics so much faster. I think it makes for frustration while learning how to use a new piece of equipment. Don't worry these machines have enough power to pick you logs at an idle without the tractor running at a high idle. You were a breath of fresh air to start my day! Good luck with your new toy and I'm sure you will get the hang of it in no time 👍
That grapple works great! It must be specifically designed for handling logs unlike other grappples that have multiple tines to pick up brush and boulders. Good choice Chris and take care.
While watching you hook up your hoses today,,,,,,I remembered watching "Ohio Woodburner" last week....his episode "My tractor needs service" .....Watch all the way to the end and I think you will learn something very important about everything you need to know about YOUR tractor!!!!!
Yes, I saw that one already! I do have one question for you though Mary, what is this spending time with another man stuff! I though I was a one and only! HA!
Great job Chris, if you curl your tilt function all the way up as soon as you get under the log it will put the weight all the way back towards the center of the tractor before you lift. Also the 55 gal. poly or steel drum full of concrete and a quick attach 3 point hookup will save you tons of time as you get more 3 point attachments mowers, box blades, ect.
It is nice to see man and machine become one! All the tractor/grapple fans should be smiling today. I couldn't help think about the end view of those logs and the amount of dirt/soil/sand inside and what that is going to do to your saw chain. 😢 Entertaining video Chris. The grapple looks like a great addition to the woodyard. If you spend more time on that tractor and less on the ground, you can become your own ballast.

Put a piece of electrical tape on the bucket level indicator at the point your grapple is level.. i have a grapple, stump bucket, forks, and of course the regular bucket and each one is different for level so i have different color tape on the rod for each. Helps when switching out front attachments to know when they are level.
I just caught up with this video. You teach me a lot about firewood so I will offer a tip, grab your log from above and roll back. The pressure of the grapple will pinch the log enough and if you really want it deeper in the jaws you can release a bit and let it fall in. You will get the finesse of it with some practice.
When you're getting close to the lifting capacity of the tractor ie. light on the rear end drive down the slopes backwards. It's also easier loading and unloading uphill as nothing is trying to run away from you. Watch your centre of gravity when driving across slopes too. A load maybe reasonably stable going across a slope when the grapple is close to the ground but will tip the tractor with it high in the air.
A little tip for avoiding digging into the ground when you're using something like the grapple of forks etc is before you go under what you want to lift lower the loader arms down the curl the attachment forward and watch for the front end of the tractor to just start coming off the ground and then roll back. The you'll know you're attachment is flat to the ground and you're not going to dig in or ride up over what you're trying to pick up. Dave
And so it begins-logger Chris. Nice to see you putting the tractor/grapple to work. Doubt that the CK would have handled that last log / good choice. Looking forward to your tractor adventures.

They should be free and not through the grapple. You get a kind wrap that goes around the hoses to stiffen them and keep them out of the way. I have a Titan log grapple. I point the bottom teeth downward and come in over the log rather then push into it. You can see a lot better.

I have a frans guard on a ck and try tilting all the way and going down over the top of log then clamping. On smaller logs do the same but grab them with the tips and you can place logs on pile exactly where you want.
There might be pressure in the grapple hoses making it difficult to connect the hoses. I’ve experienced that a few times. The sun will expand the hydraulic fluid, building pressure & making it impossible to connect the hoses until you relieve the pressure by pressing the ends of the hose fittings & emptying some hydraulic fluid. Use a rag over the fittings when relieving pressure so you don’t get squirted with hydraulic fluid.
Hey Yard Man, nice crab claw you have there. Looks like a keeper and the price was right. You'll be throwing logs around blindfolded soon. Take care. WST
Ballast. I struggled with what to do. I was thinking of casing a concrete block for the three-point then I realized I own an old large wood stove I don't use and can't sell, that weighs a shit ton and I can fill it with gravel. So I'll weld some mounts to that.
You dont want the hose to be able to be pinched anywhere, you may want to use a strategic bungee cord to keep it out of pinching possibility. And in the interest of efficiency while you have the logs in the grapple cut them up while they are in the air.
I have found that it is faster to cut them in a pile, if I had a bad/weak back then yes with the grapple off the ground would be nice but to much picking , lifting , climbing on and off the tractor. In the pile I just cut.
One of these days I will buy a grapple, I feel like we have been watching the prep work of a massive log load coming that last few days, sharpen the chains, stack the left over wood, trim the x-mas tree's move wood piles around, ect.. something is up with that wood yard and hopefully its going to be epic.
Stopped in to pick something up from him and there were no logs in site. That was a few days after he filmed this video. Maybe there are logs coming yet. Even if there isn't, sure is nice to have a grapple around just jn case he does get a big log or two in the next load.
Use the inner tubes to wrap hoses when you empty them after you get tired of them hanging off and falling off the back and you have to get a weight box. You will never have enough weight to plow with. BTW snow pusher is a good choice. Trust me, you will need chains for front tires.......all the best.
@@InTheWoodyard I’m hour west of Ottawa Ontario Canada. Andrew from Eastonmade is about half an hour from me. Love your channel watch every day keep up the awesome content cheers.
Nice. Taking a little break after I found metal in one of my logs. 🤬 oh well it happens I guess. Got some more logs blocked up. Now I’m running into the issue of the wood pile being too tall for me to safely pull logs off of. My log guy is new so he sadly piled it up all wild. But he has to bring another one next week so he can fix his mistake. You live and learn.
You might want to pick up your logs with the grapple coming down from the top then roll it back so that you're not getting into the ground as bad. Plus it will allow you to pick out the log you want. Looking good with the learning curve.
While I like the sand filled inner tubes for their variety of uses, when you lifted the first log the ass end of the tractor got light. I Respect your budget consciousness, and I would Not want to spend money either, but a ballast box filled with concrete will provide a more dense package, foot x foot x foot than the sand filled inner tubes. Maybe a 3'w x 2'd x 2'l steel box would provide a better weight behind for you, after all it will have one job, counter-weight for front lifting capacity. Just a thought Chris. Can't wait for next episode of 'In The Woodyard'.
You don't have to start the tractor, to lower the loader. Also, I loop my hoses over the top of the crossbar, and connect the fittings from underneath.
Any idea what those logs weigh. Don’t forget to check your hydraulic fluid in the tractor. If the grabble cylinder and hoses to the tractor were empty. Thanks for the tractor video. Handy attachment for sure.
The amount of hydraulic oil in the system does support the use of the grapple or any other attachment so no need for oil check, all pipes are already full!!
Chris - operate the grapple through the entire range and watch the hoses as they move, if they look like they are getting pinched then move them around and tie them so they stay out of the way. GNI
I’ve had trouble hooking up my hydraulic hoses on my grapple to my tractor because of pressure in the grapple lines. I store my grapple outside & the sunshine heats up the hydraulic hoses which creates expansion of the hydraulic fluid in the hoses causing a lot of pressure. Last time when I unhooked my grapple from the tractor I left the jaws open hoping it wouldn’t have pressure in the grapple hoses the next time I hooked the grapple up to my tractor. Over time the grapple jaws closed so that didn’t work. There is a tool on the market that can be used to relieve the hydraulic pressure buildup in the grapple hoses but it $ 110 or so. I’m not buying that pricey tool when I can press the tit of the hydraulic fittings on some hard object to relieve the hydraulic pressure. I just need to remember to put a rag over the hydraulic fittings when I relieve the pressure.
I would suggest in using the grabber that when you go to lay down the logs you raise them higher and tilt the grabber downward and place the log where you want them you will spend less time getting loose of the log,
Think you’re right… it might be time to add some more bologna ballast. 🤣 Those rear tires were looking mighty light when lifting those logs. Maybe “Back 40” could lend you the 3 he shared recently.

When you're getting close to the lifting capacity of the tractor ie. light on the rear end drive down the slopes backwards.
It's also easier loading and unloading uphill as nothing is trying to run away from you.

Ballast. I struggled with what to do. I was thinking of casing a concrete block for the three-point then I realized I own an old large wood stove I don't use and can't sell, that weighs a shit ton and I can fill it with gravel. So I'll weld some mounts to that.
That sound like a good idea!
Can’t believe you didn’t hear me… I was screaming lift up, lift up! You are wrecking your lawn!! 😂
The lawn can all die, then I don't have to mow it anymore! HA!
@@InTheWoodyard I only said that because you were already moving the pile and anytime you can save touching the wood is a win in my book.
@@daveed2812 Yup, that makes sense, I cut it all up today.
Good morning from Grand Forks
Good morning Dean!
Hi Chris, first you say you like to "stack" your split wood then you say you prefer to hip it in "bins"!! Graham UK.
That is correct! Stacking looks good and saves space but for a year now the bins are working out MUCH better for drying and saving time!
Yup, I just got 2 huge loads in , you will see it soon!
I just got 2 loads!
@@InTheWoodyard, so you are the one that took all the cheap firewood logs out from under me????? LOL!
@@thefirewooddoctor No, I bought the good stuff, cherry and locust!
Try picking up from the top rather than the side. I found that’s easier and makes less mess.
Thanks Mark, a few others have suggested that too!
Great job! Thanks for taking us along on your learning journey!
Glad you enjoyed it! I have lots to learn!
Looks like Chris’ beard is on its way back !!
No, not for a few more weeks yet!
Those grapples are as handy as a shirt pocket!
Yup, just a giant powerful thumb!
Use the inner tubes to wrap hoses when you empty them after you get tired of them hanging off and falling off the back and you have to get a weight box. You will never have enough weight to plow with. BTW snow pusher is a good choice. Trust me, you will need chains for front tires.......all the best.
Thanks Guerry!
Now I want one! 😁
NEED ONE!
It’s all about the tractor and grapple now ! 🤪 👌🏻🔥🇨🇦
Yup, it is a very fun toy and it will help a lot!
@@InTheWoodyard talking about toys I get my Eastonmade 12-22 in aprox two weeks😀
@@savagefirewood Cool, where are you at in the world?
@@InTheWoodyard I’m hour west of Ottawa Ontario Canada. Andrew from Eastonmade is about half an hour from me. Love your channel watch every day keep up the awesome content cheers.
OMG, is that Sad Anthony at 2:22. Haven't seen him in years. He and I went to school together way back when.
Ya, there is a lot of strange faces in that wood!
Before I had the tractor, I used a chain and my truck to pull logs off the pile a few times.
@@InTheWoodyard yeah i have a short clip of the pile from today’s cutting it’s way to squirrelly and to climb on and yank logs in my opinion.
Just a bit of heads up… these compact tractors tip surprisingly quickly when carrying loads, especially if there is no sufficient counterweight
Yup! My back tires are loaded 1,000 lbs and I have 500 lbs extra on the back, but I am going to get more.
You might want to pick up your logs with the grapple coming down from the top then roll it back so that you're not getting into the ground as bad. Plus it will allow you to pick out the log you want. Looking good with the learning curve.
Thanks Jeff, a few others suggested that too!
Yup, I just might end up with a ballast box. Thanks for watching Jeff!
You don't have to start the tractor, to lower the loader. Also, I loop my hoses over the top of the crossbar, and connect the fittings from underneath.
Thanks!
Yes, the biggest one calculated out to be 2,050 lbs so pretty heavy!
Thanks Brian!
chris i think you did great, you'll be a mover and shaker in no time. : )
Thanks a bunch John, I have lots to learn!
Chris - operate the grapple through the entire range and watch the hoses as they move, if they look like they are getting pinched then move them around and tie them so they stay out of the way. GNI
Thanks Joel!
I am already visualizing you putting logs on a processor! :)
That would be nice for sure! Maybe one day it will happen!
Yes, I have heard that before, thanks Dennis!
That makes it easy on the back
Yes it is awesome!
Exciting Times!!!
Yes it is, thanks Michael!
I would suggest in using the grabber that when you go to lay down the logs you raise them higher and tilt the grabber downward and place the log where you want them you will spend less time getting loose of the log,
Thanks for the tips Charles!
Time for pink tape. Put pink tape on the level bar for the level of the grapple.
YES! That is a great idea Lamar!
Looking good and making tuff work look easy. Still think the balance weight needs to be refined more.
Thanks Hugh, the weight might get replaced with a ballast box.
Think you’re right… it might be time to add some more bologna ballast. 🤣 Those rear tires were looking mighty light when lifting those logs. Maybe “Back 40” could lend you the 3 he shared recently.
Dans sausages are to small for me but he is used to that size!
@@InTheWoodyard Oh damn! That’s fantastic!
Outta be against the law to have that much fun !
Shhhhh! I don't want me wife to hear!
That hollow log with the plant in it would be nice in my garden.
Yes, I have given a few of those away to people for that! Thanks for watching!
When I get in those situations I call a friend/Tony, he would help you out!
Yes , phone a friend is a good thing!
