Badly chosen title ... there is no discussion of any physics at all, much less complex physics (sic). It was the lure of such that made me click here. -1 for not delivering.
Statistically the US created a dam every day since independence. It kills the eco system upstream where the salmon would normally die, depositing nutrients and food for the food chain. It would be better to divert high water levels or small amounts continuously to reservoirs rather than dam the river. More birds and insects mean less pests and diseases for crops, a healthier place to live for all. Indeed there are places where dams have been removed and alternative irrigation implemented that benefits both. A little off topic; a hundred years ago in the NE USA the cod caught in a day is now what is caught in a year. The original French settlers said you could walk the Atlantic because it was so full of cod. People don't realise what we have lost since they only think for a generation.
our need to "harness and control water" sure, but AT WHAT SCALE?! seems an inappropriate scale with ecological imbalance, many negative impacts, and is not necessary/smart compared to alternative appropriate, living-scale capture-control of water in the right places.. but "easier said", and there's always politics to consider..

I agree. I wanted to hear some science.
Most dams are here to stay errr think NOT
Remove the damn dam!
That explained nothing

เยี่ยมๆๆสุดๆๆนะจ๊ะ
Wow! They use dams to store chocolate milk?
