- This Rainbow Box Set is something I first looked back in my Google Plus Days on another channel. I felt it was worth re-visiting for music fans who missed it at the time.
This was a great value set back in 2014 and you could pick it up back then for about £15.00.
Rainbow was the project that saw guitar legend Ritchie Blackmore move on from Deep Purple. Originally formed as a one off solo project to record the Quatermass song Black Sheep Of The Family, Rainbow went on to release seven studio albums on Polydor (initially Oyster) in their original existence. Between the breakup of Deep Purple in the mid 70s and their reformation in in 1984, Ritchie took Rainbow into the charts, around the world, through a number of hard rock angles; from the mystic first album and Man On The Silver Mountain to the majestic Rainbow Rising and the epic Stargazer, then the rockin’ Long Live Rock’n’Roll to the more commercial power of All Night Long and the Down To Earth album, before heading American with tracks like I Surrender and Street Of Dreams.
Rainbow also totally redefined the concept of revolving-door line-ups; Ronnie James Dio, Cozy Powell, Don Airey, Roger Glover, Bobby Rondinelli and Joe Lynn Turner were just some of the few that came and went, with Blackmore’s volatile temperament never far away.

Thanks Phil, picked this up a few years ago back for $37.50 us money. I was lucky. I really enjoy the set. Some of the live recordings are a bit rough. Cheers Gary
I’m a Rainbow fan and what I’m STILL waiting for is a decent remaster of Rainbow Rising, my favourite album of theirs. I have the so called remaster from 1999 which is pretty poor, sound wise. Actually, a new box set of ALL Rainbow’s albums suitably remastered would suit me most definitely!
Great review, I have it & along with the deluxe editions of their albums, it's essential if your a RAINBOW fan, really well put together & I'm a massive fan if the live version of 'Stargazer', Blackmore's slide guitar solo is out of this world!

Yes, I would have loved to have seen a deluxe of the debut, & the remaining albums tbf, I have the Rainbow Remasters series but I don't know much about them, I think they came out in the late '90's?
Great review! I wish I’d seen this when you first posted it. Availability seems to have nosedived and price consequently risen. C’est la vie! Anyway I found a reasonably priced eBay listing for £100 and offered £85 which was accepted, so result! Higher than I’d have liked to pay but I just had to have it! A new year’s pressie to me! Enjoyed that Phil. Strikes me that a lot of box sets could do with a reissue. The demand is there.
I feel the print runs are getting shorter. This one was around for a while (2015) it is the box sets from the last couple of years which seem to sell out on the week of release. Phil
Yes Phil, I agree. The Thin Lizzy one was a good example.
Very true but that is an interesting one. It sold out on the day of release. When the second run appeared I bought it immediately for about £95. It is now about £70 and there seems to be plenty about. I wonder if this is like the old days of the charts when for example the Iron Maidens latest single would go straight into the charts at a high position and the next week would drop out of it. In the future they might create print runs based on preorders of subscription models. Phil
Hi Phil, oh that's interesting. I had assumed it was all sold out. I will have a look around over here. I hope preorders don't become the norm. I like to spread the costs out so that my budget is pretty linear.
Me too! The Thin Lizzy set is well worth it if you have not picked it up yet.
Good review Phil, I have the box set myself, and yes I think it was a good effort. Have you done a review ? or if not would you consider doing one of the Deep Purple, Listen, Learn, Read On, box set from 2002. I know its long out of print, but personally it's one of my favourite box sets.
I feel also it is beautifully put together and six CD's ' Wow '. It now demands quite a bit on money in decent condition, I have my original box, but I was lucky to see sale about 10 years ago for £30, and still sealed. I grabbed it and it's still sealed. I am pretty confident you have this monster in your collection. Keep it coming Phil, I always like dropping in for a catch up.

Re: the Rainbow Budokan Gig CD that was in the Deluxe RB story set. My enjoyment of the gig was tempered by the Octaviour Peddle being left on, which took a lot of emotion out of RB’s playing.

Phil did you ever get to see "Rainbow" with Ronnie James Dio? And if you did, did they have the giant rainbow stage set up? I’ve got to see them in 1978 with Ronnie at SF Winterland without the rainbow, but Richie did destroy his guitar.

Haha, not quite! I don’t think it was that cheap for very long. Single CDs are about £15 again now.
