  • Chu kicked off the budget arms race last year, and now they're back with a sequel and... more firepower? The Moondrop Chu 2 brings the welcome addition of a removable cable, but that's not all that's changed.

Great review Mark. I was waiting for it specifically. Im buying it because i don't want an iem with plastic shell and also it has a good cable. Also i don't remember trying a v shaped sound. Also also moondrop is a great brand. Best wishes.

The cable is indeed amazing, the pattern is different from the SSR/SSP cable but the feel is definitely the same. The splitter is finally small and compact, although the internals don't exactly look nice, that's my only complaint about the cable really. Other than that, these ChuChus are a great buy even for their cables alone.

I like them, a nice addition to the Moondrop family and pair well with my Starfield which are warmer. These are brighter.
It’s nice to hear the different tuning of the same target though. I like both and hope these last as long for me.
Great sleeping IEM btw, just watch the volume considering they are bright hearing damage is a risk.

Using these with my new dongle dac and I really like them. I suspect this dongle is kinda neutral as the sound doesn't change. Used high gain and was surprised by how...like more full the midrange comes across. Yes volume increased but the midrange was brought forward a tad too which was nice. It opened them up a tad. Still not a wide soundstage but thats fine. The imaging is really great. If it had more sound stage, these would be even more banger. Reminds me of the kato just more v shaped. Nothing like my hexa. So it's refreshing and fun. I enjoy them with rock and pop punk especially. J-rock too

looking back, I think I'm happy with Lan being the Chu successor for those who want that kind of neutral tune, while Chu 2 replaces the og Chu as MD's go-to budget offering. Just wish the marketing around it made it more obvious what they were thinking 😂

Surprisingly, the OG Chu was great using it onstage or on the film studio. It eqd very well and with Dekoni foam tips we get all the bass we need. One reason was actually the cable. Having it attached was a plus when using them with musicians who were newbies to iems. Those musicians tend to fiddle with the iem as its a new thing to them. This eliminated them from disconnecting them by accident while performing. Imagine the same scenario if they were wearing a $100+ iem, they accidentally unplug one and drop it on a dark stage. The fall damages it or someone steps on it and you've lost what it costs. So that attached cable is great for newbies. But it sucks, so we modified them all , a very different mod than others. The cable is slinky, and kinda moves on its own. It won't stay over.your ear on its own. So here's what we've done.
First I cut the y connector out of it. That gave me access to all 3 cables. I then made earhooks using Flexo PET sleeving and forming them with a heatgun. I made a special jig to hold them in place until they cooled. I then used Flexo Noise Reducing sleeving over the cable from the y position all the way up across the earhooks to the cable/iem connection on both iems, and attached it with Flexo 3-1 heat shrink, blue on one side red on the other. This made the cable very soft across the ears. I then put 1/8" Flexo Noise Reducing sleeve on the cable from the y down to the plug, attached once again by 3-1 shrink tubing. (Flexo Noise is a very soft sleeve expandable to easily go over connectors and when pulled tight it fits the cable perfectly. It also kills any microphonics in the cable; and completely tamed the slinky cable, it hangs straight and doesn't tangle.I used black.)
Now to the y connection!! First I put a chin slidder on the upper two wires. I then replaced the y connection with both iem cables going to a miniature 3.5 male connector, and finished it off with black Flexo 3-1 heat shrink. I put a 3.5 female connector on the bottom cable and secured it with the heat shrink.
This complete cable mod costs less than $8.
So now we have a very soft, quite cable, and we can put the short cable on to go to a receiver pack, or with most people to their phones, or I can connect other lengths of cable instead of the short one to reach mixers etc for drummers and other musicians that run straight instead of wireless.
This may all be moot to most because the Chu 2 is out now, but the OG is actually a really good iem if you use foam tips and it eqs well for almost anything. And the attached cable is an asset to us. This cable mod changes everything about the comfort of the OG. We have 12 OGs and 12 Chu2s .So for us the $8 mod on the OG is cheaper than what we usually do which is replacing the stock cables with upgrade cables; another $20. We're using the Zonie cable on the Chu2s. But one last thing, that new black cable looks awesome with the OG units!!
Great video! Sorry for the long post, but a lot of the OGs are out there, and I thought this might be good for some of them.
    All the best, Sonny T

@@KelvinKamsg thanks but honestly the Tech Flex products make it so easy. The expandable sleeping goes over big connectors and pulls right down to fit the cable size. If you had the OG Chu, you know the cable had a mind of its own!! That sleeving made it straight and tamed and very soft. I love the idea of a 3.5 connector replacing the y splitter, you can use different length cables !! We did a balanced version with 2.5 connectors and a rattlesnake sleeving, and it looked too cool!! It also sounds better when you have more power to work with and you can get it loud enough from 5- down. I should do a video on the cable mod, it’s cheap and looks awesome. The black looks killer with the OG Chu; we did a mod that eliminates any paint chipping if you’d like to hear it. All the best,
      Sonny T

@@thesonnytackettshow7949 Definitely do a video if you have the time! A mod like that can help anyone with cable issues, not just Chu owners.
Also in a way, reduces waste as people are less likely to discard ergonomically misbehaving cables.

    • @thesonnytackettshow7949
      @thesonnytackettshow7949 11 місяців тому

@@KelvinKamsg I’ve found a lot of stock cables that sound good, but they look terrible or get tangled easy or the hooks are too tight. A lot of things. This Tech Flex can change a cable so much you’d never recognize it. It’s in tons of colors, patterns and the shrink tubing comes in matching colors. The shrink tube is not like you’d get a your local hardware, it’s shrink ratio is 3-1, or 4-1 as apposed to regular which is 2-1. This allows the shrink tube to slide over large connectors and still shrink down. I have a piece that is 3/4” and 3-1 shrink ratio. That means it will go over a 3/4” connector and shrink to 1/3 it’s size, which is 1/4”. I sound like a damn salesman!! They should be paying me,lol!! , or at least pay this channel !! It works and we use it!! Sonny T

I'll never buy another IEM without a shaped nozzle for the ear canal, as much as I loved the S8 sound. I imagine even of they could build the S8 MKII, or a S10 - it'll be an identical fit. I like it over the ear for two reasons: (1) When it's done right, it improves the fit stability. It popping out of your ear because it was stiff sounds like a bad hook, though sometimes you can improve them by reshaping them with a hair dryer. And (2) it significantly reduces "cable noise" that can happen when a cable rubs against your shirt.

I've been using Moondrop Chu II for a week and here's my review:
This is my first IEM. I have had many Over Ear Headphones, Earphones and TWS. To be honest, I think as a budget IEM it's good sounding. Not bad, not great, not average, just good compared to any earphones at this price point. But it has almost zero percentage of soundstage or spacial audio and it bothers me a lot. It feels like mini version of large sound speakers playing near me but there is no spacial depth in it.. if that makes any sense? The built quality is undoubtedly great. And I'll let you know about durability after couple of months of use if you ask me. Above all I'd say I didn't like it's sound that much.

I’m starting to think they’re trying to transition to the new swappable filters for their “lower tier” IEMs starting with the Chus. Moondrop has been getting a crap ton of complaints about channel imbalance (from users in humid areas) due to using metal as a chassis, I guess the best they could do to solve that issue is just give serviceable filters instead of investing more money on RnD on where to put the ventilation holes.

The original Chu definitely felt more unique than the Chu II, but the Chu II feels all around more versatile both in sound and serviceability.
One downside is that I had to replace the filters on the Chu II in the first 5 days where as the original took me too weeks before they started to degrade. Another thing I didnt care for are the tips included with the Chu II, I find myself just using the Chu Spring Tips as they are just so much more comfortable and easier to take in and out.
