  • Pohjois-Karjalan Sähkö Oy has been generating clean hydropower in its own power plants in the region of North Karelia for decades. A responsible hydropower production strategy means that the preservation of river biodiversity and in particular the improvement of habitat conditions for migratory fish are important principles in production planning and the modernization of power plants. We are pioneers in this field. Regional hydropower plays a significant role in the energy security of Eastern Finland, as the reliability of domestic, decentralized hydropower is nearly one hundred percent. When energy is produced close to consumers, its transmission is more cost-effective, and losses are smaller.
Renewable and responsibly produced hydropower is the primary balancer of electricity production as it can quickly respond to fluctuations between production and consumption. Hydroelectric energy is also stored for use when wind or solar energy is not available. Together they ensure renewable carbon-neutral electricity production.
