Kurosawa said the same thing back in the day.
"If you want to be a filmmaker, write screenplays. All you need is a pencil and paper. Take a book you like, and adapt it. Doesn't matter what book or what you use it for."
It's incredible to think the impact Kurosawa had in western movies, even if most people don't realize. I don't think any other "eastern" side director had so much impact like his.
Where is the quote from specifically?
Great comment 👍
Did he say if you have to pay for the rights or not?

This is why Spielberg has been consistently one of the best directors for decades now. He doesn’t get stuck in the past and is always willing to try new things
I think he is the single best...just the sheer versatility😮
He basically just said, “I learn a lot from young filmmakers. This one thing I’ve learned, in particular, is something I’ve said for a very long time.”
😂
exactly lmfaooo
Right loool
I think he's saying Daniels is audacious with his shots because he knows people are there for the story, so he can get as creative as he wants as long as the writing and story are consistent. He's known the storytelling thing for a long time, but Daniels is one of the first he's seen take advarange of it to this extent
@@pepesilvia429 Daniels are two people.
@@pepesilvia429 Jesus dude. It's two guys named Daniel. Unreal.
"If it ain't on the page, it ain't on the stage"
Stanley Kubrick laughing at the corner 😂
Obviously the script is the first really good thing a movie has to have. Everything else comes after.
Can we please get Spielberg to do a StarWars trilogy lol
Didn't manage it in the last 45 years.... Idk how it's gonna happen
I think Star Wars is a mine field that Spielberg does not want to step into. And he would probably say to Kathleen Kennedy "what are you doing?"
He had the chance several times and it never happened
Didn’t he ghost direct a few scenes of Revenge of the Sith? He owed Lucas a favour who oversaw the edit of Jurassic Park while Spielberg was off doing Schindlers List…
He was also first choice to direct Return of the Jedi but the directors guild of America wouldn’t allow it
He can't. The DGA has rules on how the credits are set up.
Do you hear that Michael Bay?
Lol
I do believe that great books, memoirs, and scripts inspire the greatest films. They motivate directors to go the extra mile and produce a labor of love.
Steven Spielberg favorites director is The Daniels (Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert.
Ryan Reynolds learnt this the hard way and he has such good humour about it.
Well, he didn't say they're his new favorite directors. If anything, it might be Damien Chazelle, who he praised a lot for La La Land and went and produced his following film First Man.
Thank you! I'm a scriptwriter, scriptwriting instructor and director. Story, story, and story!
Great insight & so humbly human of him to still be excited/ learning from the young geniuses of today
"...Most of it is what not to do, but that's still an important part of the learning process"
He's getting back into independent films . They definitely need his funding
Steven Spielberg is my favorite movie director ever!
I was hoping he’d mention Stephen Groo. He’s both a writer and director.
🙏 Thank You So Much Master Steven Spielberg for the Good Advice indeed! 🌷🌿🌏💜🕊
Mr Spielberg please do a western now
Meanwhile, Terrance Malick walks off.
Wong Kar-Wai and Werner Herzog silently laugh to themselves.
@@Whoa802herzog barely have any worthy movies. He a document guy
who ever thought it was the shots and not the story?
Terrance Malick, Kubrick to a large extent, Godard sometimes on a day used to change the script or improvise everything if he was in a mood. I think the key is a vision and a lot of confidence.
I'm REALLY surprised this guy isn't as out there as Lucas, he's literally just been in and out of his home watching movies and only at game studios still wanting to make a cool game.
Oh, right! Great cinematography is for great stories, well written and then well shot, not the other way around hehehe
That's something else people need to learn.
@@seanforrest7991 :
Yeah, especially whatwith them being paid to do exactly that hehehehe
its something i wish ridley scott cared more about, because hes probably the greatest director of his generation buts hes willing to let stuff like prometheus happen where the issues that stopped it being an all time great film were on the page before he even tried to film it.
Most honest the best film maker can give the chance to change your life 👍
Steven sat his ass down and listened....
Can we all just take a moment to be grateful that a film company like A24 exist these days, and are literally the only thing keeping real cinema alive?
9:00 that answer tells you a lot.
20+ year in the industry, ive always said: "Production can make a good script a bad movie, but never a bad script a good movie. Its the blueprint. Take your time. Get it right."
This needs to happen: Angelina Jordan in Paris Steven Spielberg
Angelina Jordan is a young singer who has amazed the world with her voice and style. She has performed in many countries and events, but one of her dreams was to sing in Paris, the city of love and art. That dream came true when she was invited by Steven Spielberg, the famous director, to be part of his new movie project. Spielberg was impressed by Angelina's talent and wanted her to sing the main theme song of his film, a romantic comedy set in Paris. Angelina was thrilled and accepted the offer, and soon she found herself in the beautiful French capital, recording the song and exploring the city with Spielberg. They had a great time together, and Angelina felt inspired by the culture and history of Paris. She also learned a lot from Spielberg, who shared his wisdom and experience with her. Angelina said that this was one of the best experiences of her life, and that she was grateful to Spielberg for giving her this opportunity.
He didn't really just learn that if he's been saying it for years. 😆
Amen❤
I would like to get my career going like you are legendary
It's so funny I keep saying the same thing, before being a good director you gotta be a good writer first to those who have writing as there strong suit, thank you Steven, you'll always be an inspiration
Food morning my friend 😮 have a blessed day
i need you to inspire Me Too!
I know everything Steven Spielberg makes is gold and to me..but i want my own gold through Tintin and the golden fleece and its different
Yup complete different mentality than Indian cinema. In India all you need is 60yr old salman khan with CGI body and 25-30yr old actress and movie will be a success and you don’t need any story at all lolll
He just realized you need a good script? Wow Steven! Any more golden nuggets of wisdom you want to share?
Obviously he didn't just realize this. He's explaining it to new filmmakers out there.
@@deckofcards87 I thought he was learning from the new filmmakers though?
He was just stressing the basics which people often overlook. You are a typical dumbass trying to act smart and embarrassing yourself.
@@galenmarek8287What he meant was people who are about to start or are stuck not young people who have already cracked it. Geez.
The writers who wrote for Spielberg in the 80s 90s 2000s were better than nowadays...... Spielberg is forgetting about them I guess....
Good writers are no worse or better now than they were 40 years ago, Spielberg essentially makes the same types of movies, just less frequently, and your opinion is irrelevant due to your overuse of punctuation. There are three commas in this comment and you've somehow used more than that to simply punctuate each of your sentences. Absolutely ridiculous... but how else would you convey sarcasm?
@@pepesilvia429 so you are teaching English?? And why are you getting offended??English is not my national language or my mother tongue. This was just a comment and no sarcasm or whatever you are thinking .Spielberg is nobody of mine or yours so stop feeling offended or just feel whatever you want to.👍
I knew you would trigger someone with truthful content. 🤣
It's not that writers are worse, it's that good writers aren't allowed to make the movies they want to make.
@@sudiptoghosh53 I'm not offended, just pointing out the hypocricy in judging writers when you can't even form a cohesive sentence.
Maybe he can give this advice to Jar Jar Abrams.
If is not on... his right
Bud Boetticher and Burt Kennedy ( one of the best western writers ever)

The Duffer Brothers
After this he announced the new Indiana Jones movie would be coming out soon
What? No, that's been anounced for quite some time now
@@rodomolina7995 yea it was a joke because he saying it’s all about the script and is about to put another crappy Jones movie out
@@wolfgangcho9236 1- Your joke sucks
2- It's not really up to Spielberg if a new Indiana Jones movie gets made or not, he's not even directing it, he barely accepted to make 4 in the first place
Spielberg literally has nothing to do with that film 😑 fail comment
@@frostgamez9368 thank you
I love how Steven is respectful and cherry picks from ALL eras.
Tarininto is a fucking video nerd foot sucking plageristic creep speiljew has made some good films but not shit like w s s and ready player one just to show he’s still box office the commie fuck he visited Castro in the 90s said it was great a stupid liberal commie kike
What a man. Gave me my shark obsession from a small child to now. Love him loads
Omg im so superadmire and love him.Hes my all time superdupermega crush .After MJ hes the last magical legend from our childhood!!! When hes gone its gonna be "where were you when you heard"..can we put back ij the past so we wont ever lose him???
A good story should be common sense to anyone with intentions of making films or wanting to act. A movie without a good story is like a sandwich with no meat.
cheese and onion tho
People who want to be filmmakers fail to understand this simple advice. It doesn't matter how expensive your camera rig is, it doesn't how well you light a scene and make the shot look like a million dollars and it doesn't matter how talented you are at using visual effects you could throw all the money in the world at a film to make it look visually amazing... but if it has nothing unique as a story then it is a failure. It costs almost nothing to write a good story, learn how to write and everything else you need to know about filmmaking comes second.
Someone send this to disney
"I saved a girl from a Satanic cult. My high school sweetheart, a five-time a day jolt. Instead of a childhood plot, and girls across the lot. I've been in hell since ten. I never made the right choice since I don't know when. So I come and see God. I run to the edge of the sand and nod. As far as I can. I wait for God with a pen in my hand!"
Star Wars had to re start from scratch yet lots could be used . ☝️😎👍
I am 54 still trying to learn everyday , only thing I have a hard time with is how the younger generation talks … their slang .. “want some smoke “ is it weed smoke YES ! Some dudes a simp … simp ? They obviously don’t know how to spell simple! I haven’t eaten pizza in a minute…. WHO can eat a pizza in a minute… 🤣
The daniels? That movie was so hard to follow and just a one time watch for me
Spielberg disagrees with you, so...
When He says young he doesnt mean TIKTOK GEN Z PS, He means people DOING the work lol but seriously........ He is the third famous director who said IF YOU WANNA WRITE- WRITE! doesnt get much simpler! WRITE YO WRITE
Lesson 101 for Snyder
Real
Yet he’s always mentioned. 😊 you people don’t understand Mr. Snyder. It’s a shame all you watch are comic book films but….
@@thomasj219 even in his non comic book movies, he’s a terrible story teller.
I highly doubt it 😂
You hear that Zack Snyder
And that's why so many films are average. The story line.
Wish he’d figured that out before shooting Ready Player One. 😂
Please, not even close. Crystal Skull! 😂😂
I think, he did a great job on The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997)
It was a great nostalgic movie for many people
@@Soundwave1of9 I loved the crystal skull
It was a great nostalgic movie for many people
Do you really need it brand new directors from 2022 to show you how important good script is!? This wasn’t common knowledge?
You're learning from young filmmakers that you need a good script? Oh please, Spielberg. You've preached that your entire career. Why the need to suck up to today's artisans?
Glad speilberg is learning at 100 years old that you “need a good script”, I guess that explains hook, kingdom of the crystal skull, BFG etc.!
He starts by saying that he learns more from young film makers then he says that one of the things he's learning... Is something he is always saying. So young film makers are teaching him that he's right
Wonder if he learned it on epstein island
Really interesting that he gives so much credit to the younger generation. We can all learn from each other if we set aside our prejudices and preconceived thoughts and just allow people express their thoughts, gleam from them what you can and then reciprocate without prejudgments!!
A lot of directers dont care about plot. Sheeps still go watch marvel and the transformers
is this why your latest movies suck?
Steven Spielberg is a climate activist. Fun fact: His superyacht emits more carbon in a single trip than your car in your entire lifetime
The fortunate few hog all the re$ources. The real talent are the squeezed out, second tier-, “Never Was” nonstarters, of whom nobody ever heard.
Sure. One shot a game. Career average is atrocious with less than 2 attempts for his career. Stop it. Career points a game 10 and that's rounding up. 🙄
Yeah no shit
Looking at his last few movies he’s learned nothing from young filmmakers . West side story was just a 1960 movie using todays equipment . Very unimaginative .
Someone should point out to him that even though the Fablemans script is nominated it is soooo corny. If his name wasn’t attached it wouldn’t be even filmed.
i think we living in a golden age of film tbh
Steve, shouldn't you be on your giant yacht preaching about the environment?
This is Epstein & Bidens best friend. He's hosting a donor party for Brandon today😂.
How is this guy still alive ?
His father lived 103, are you really questioning his age at 76.
Write, and don’t look back. You’ll understand your own mistakes through practice.
He forgot that script part for a while. Hope he remembered it the new indy film.
He’s not directing that, James Mangold is (Logan, Ford V Ferrari).
@@traylorc.3653
That may help.
In indian films it is other way around. Shots become prominent than scripts.🤮🤮🤮
Did anyone catch Kimmel's joke about Seth Rogan and Stephen Spielberg being Hollywood's Hunter and Joe Biden? That joke works on a couple different levels if you know what I mean 😉.
And he hasn't made a decent film since "Munich"
You may dislike Lincoln, The Post, Bridge of Spies, West Side Story or the Fabelmans, but saying they're not "decent" is simply false
I hope Zack Snyder is taking notes...oh...he's out!?!...and the whole DCU is getting rebooted?! Ok cool
Spielberg calling the Daniels genius... that's just sad.
Today writers have woke agenda
He's a corny, sentimental hack.
MCU.exe has stopped working.
Really ? Everything everywhere is crap !
Then why are most new films shit and have no cultural permanence?
