I love how the “ultimate” version of Sonic Colors completely ignores the existence of the DS port. I don’t know if it would be possible on a technical level, but allowing you to play both versions in one game would have really cool.
But then again, it’s a blessing in disguise because the DS version don’t get butchered like…..this.

Anyone who argues that "the on-disc build is irrelevant" has no regard for the future. At some point, Nintendo will kill Switch support, block access to the eshop entirely (they did for the wii and dsi/3ds), and all we'll have is the beyond destroyed build on physical media for current consoles. "Patch it Later" is the most destructive mentality ever popularized for game archival and preservation, and it shouldn't exist.
You know the Wii and ds and 3ds shops are still open
@@someonesomewherenew6628 they're closed. Nintendo allows you to use them to access your purchases, but you can't buy anything off them. I wasn't even aware Nintendon't allowed access to the wii shop because they didn't for a while. Apparently this is a new development from just a few weeks ago, and I don't trust Nintendon't to keep that access up for everyone.
Preach! Game archival and preservation is dieing and the masses cheer.
I wish you would take this level of thinking to politics
You ever heard of homebrew 😎
15:47 To answer your question, no. It is unacceptable for games to be released in a poor quality like this. SEGA looked at Colors Ultimate and said, "Yup, go ahead! Ship it to stores!" and that's *not* okay. And that's one of the reasons why I'm concerned about Frontiers. It'll be rushed out to stores and shelves, just like every other Sonic game in the past 20 years. The fact that people still trust SEGA to NOT rush their next title for their most popular mascot is asinine, and people should start looking at Frontiers with more realistic expectations.
If you can count on Sega to do one thing, it's rush a Sonic game. If things like Colors Ultimate or Origins are releasing in such states, Frontiers doesn't have a fucking chance. If BOTW is still pretty buggy and has notable performance drops, Sega trying to even remotely imitate that idea is probably going to be an utter technical nightmare if even simple ports get rushed this badly.
I shall give this comment the 69 like it deserves
I mean look at nintendo. They made a game called super mario sunshine. This game was rushed and it was clear but nintendo decided to make their games as non buggy as they can
My optimism for Frontiers is simply because I think it looks good from the little bit I've seen so far. It's fully 3D and has the ability to use Sonic Wind which are two things I've greatly wanted in a Sonic game for a long time. and the graphics look really good in my opinion. I am a little worried, but I have hope.
@@zeroattentiongaming820 What's wrong with Origins? The three music swaps in a fourteen level game? Because that's really not a big deal.
To be absolutely brutally honest, I'm not only disappointed in SEGA for greenlighting this buggy, no functional, seizure inducing mess of a *port,* but in fans who excuse and defend it. Yes, I understand that gamed are hard to make but this is a port of a decade old game on the Wii without even a quarter of the lack of quality control. No, I do not nor will I ever care that it has been patched. The state it released in is utterly unacceptable and should not be taken lightly. I do not play games to be a beta tester, I play them for a fun, exciting experience which is what I wanted to do here because I've never played Colours and actually wanted to experience the game. But not like this. Sonic Colours Ultimate doesn't deserve my money, and it most certainly doesn't deserve yours. Sonic not only can but should do better than this half baked mess.
Oh god, the "kids" defending this pile of "reeeemaster" garbage disgusts me.
Yep. Rather not be a "fan" of a fanboy shitfest franchise than just enjoying and appreciating the game's that have (origins??????) or still continue being great games back when I don't fucking know anymore.
Wait....PEOPLE DEFEND THIS FUCKFEST OF A PORT?!!
Don't be to hard on the Sonic Super Fans. Stockholm syndromes a bitch and a half and Segas got that on lock for them unfortunately. They can no longer tell a Sonic 06 tier release from a Sonic Mania release. Its truly heart breaking to see such a beloved mascot be kicked around a crack house constantly like this but alas here we are
@@MrDark086 Generations would’ve been a more fair comparison but Mania works too I guess
And you know what the worst part is *they fucking did it again with Origins* And this time we know it’s SEGA's fault

@@martinhodges572 if the franchise survived 06 and Rise of Lyric then Forces would have been nothing
To be fair Rise of Lyric was branded as a different kind of Sonic entirely and it was saved by the TV Show anyway
The fact that a game can be released like this and the majority of people aren't up in arms about it just makes me depressed.

Sonic fans like myself can't be up in arms about it because it feels like I've been up in arms about shitty Sonic games since 2013 and I'm tired man. I just didn't buy ultimate, that's the best way of saying no to SEGA.
@@captinsparklezremix THIS, so much

Is there a fate worse than being turned into a copy of the Rachet & Clank Trilogy for PS3?
Possibly only rivaled by a digital copy of Sonic Origins
no
True
Being turned into a copy of forces
Yeh
The main problem I have with this "patch it later" mentality, is that Consumers still often pay 60$ for what is essentially an early access game. Which isn't fair, its dishonest, a full priced game should be a complete game. Its also not fair to developers because I'm 90% sure that this only happens due to crunch culture. While I agree that you are more than allowed to enjoy this game, it's very important that we all return feedback when companies release games in this state. Otherwise, they make their money and nothing changes. Reviews like this are amazing because it helps genuinely showcase the problem! 10/10 Soda!
13:27 Gotta love that the Quality-Assurance is in the Credits as though they actually did anything at all. -_-
I find it actually crazy how Sonic projects and games get years to be worked on and either buggy, bad or both but Sega’s other franchise Yakuza and RGG Studios releases about 1 game every year and they come out perfectly fine.
Wweeeeeeeell "Perfectly fine" is debatable? Yakuza 6 was. Sure a game.
@@KashKey- I think Yakuza 6 (and even Kiwami 2) were more so growing pains since it was on a new engine and everything, the dragon engine games got better with every game just look at the combat of Lost Judgment compared to 6 and it’s day and night with how much it’s improved. Meanwhile with Sonic games whenever they try something new, if it fails even a little bit they’ll just try something else or go back to the boost style, even before the boost style was introduced that happened. Also I think perfectly fine is what 6 is, the gameplay was okay, the story was good, some minigames were fun, substories were alright usually and overall while probably one of the weaker games I wouldn’t say bad, it’s just perfectly fine
Specially sad considering how during the 2000s, ST was routinely getting one or two years and they kept making biyearly/yearly releases, or even relessing multiple games in the same year, and aside from some jank, they much more stable
Hell, HD Unleashed only had 2 years, one for the Hedgy engine and the rest of that giant ass game was made in just one year
So 2010's "Taking time to assure quality" ment "Taking longer for shittier games"
But why is Sonic so bad now? Are they afraid of making something good? Do they just not care anymore?
@@geniuskhan2520 tl;dr, ST was nuked and renewed after BK, since then, the only mostly unanimously well recieved game was Colors (Gens was a leftover project of 2000's ST), so its safe to say '10 ST, given double dev times, cannot make amything remarkable or better than their 2000's counterparts, be it Racers, Boost games, or 'Adventure'
Reviewing games completely unpatched and out of the box is a genius move I hadn't even considered myself. And now that you did it, I agree more people should do it.
Also, I agree. Companies shouldn't be allowed to get away with this 'fix it later' approach. What if, hypothetically, someone doesn't have access to internet in their country? They won't be able to get their game patched then and be left with a broken, buggy mess.
Kirby and the forgotten land is the only modern AAA game I can remember that’s never been patched. (Since its April release)
People before all this online bs have been preaching about this for ages, BUT DID ANY OF YOU EVER LISTEN?!

@@BradfortBottlenose Pretty sure he's saying that some people have been talking about why patch-it-later is a bad thing for a long time. But no one listened and so only now after we see the consequences of it are people upset.
@@kempolar9768 That’s what I’m trying to say.
Dude, your whole point about Frontiers is what I’ve been saying since the first trailer. I’m super happy that another person came to that conclusion independently of me saying it.
Don't worry, I've thought that way for over a year now.
It's been my thoughts since Colors Ultimate came out, and I already had dying expectations from Sonic Team after Forces. I don't think my opinions of them could drop any lower.
@@Skylancer727 Buddy, you may be opening a can of worms by saying that.
I really want Frontiers to be good. Because if Sega screws it up again, than I'm done with Sonic. Not even the return of Ian Flynn would help.
@@quandio6223 I mean, everyone agrees Sonic has an incredible rocky history. Unfortunately the franchise changes so much every few years we can't even really agree what the good games were anymore. Half of youtubers make videos on why Adventure 1 and 2 are masterpieces while the other half say it's crap, there are people who say Heroes is the next big thing after adventure, and then there's others who say it was the first of the dark ages, Colors was praised at launch but views have diminished with time, Generations was solid but broken up by needing to do filler missions to progress and even still being less than 2 hours long, etc.
I really don't see a good way to trust Sonic Team when the games continue to change things they didn't have to either. Like how Colors made drifting only possible in select areas, Gens fixed Unleashed's drifting (that one was good), but then Forces totally removed it or only uses it in automated sections. They seem to be incredibly sporadic on their ideas they implement.
Frontiers so far already shows similar with the side loop. You hold a button down while running in a circle. Okay, so... I know they'll add some lore reason to it, but right now, what's it's selling point? The best purpose behind it so far was the shielded enemy, but it could have just been an enemy you hit in the back. It's just that with an extra step.
Knowing Sonic's history till now as I've played basically every game, I really fear the things you would probably gloss over in the moment but as the game goes on really start to mess with you.

Holy shit, is that Rex?
I agree with reviewing the game as it was released. This kind of stuff is really abhorrent and it's nothing but a slap in the face to consumers. Like think about the people who pre-ordered the thing. This is what they deserve for chucking their cash at a game they not only hope should be good but believe should be good considering that it's a port of a game they probably already like? You're a big enough fan of this franchise to buy the thing to play it on second one of release and you get the worst experience imaginable? I'm with ok with post game bug fixes but that should be for like a handful of things that players find by accident. This stuff is unavoidable. I hope something changes because if this is how big studios are gonna treat us then what can we really expect moving forward? Higher levels of quality control for indie games? Are small studios the only ones who have the capacity to hire people who give a shit? I don't know any more man. What a time to be a consumer.
That should be the norm.
Why would anybody ignore that and push it aside because they updated it weeks, months later?
In the end when you pick this game up in 10 years when the switch has no more online support this is the game you will play unless you mod your switch,ps4 etc and download the patches yourself.
Games that release in such a state are in my eyes Worthles
The worst thing for me is people who just accept it...accept games like this because "they will fix it later" and even if they do, it's never enough and soon, the developers give up and go work on another project, and we, consumers, are left with a kind of fixed game, which shouldn't have been like this from day one (coff coff cyberpunk) But the devs continue this cycle, because they realized that people buy anyway, buggy or not, because gamers don't seem to see value in themselves, in their time and money.
You can't trust indie game studios anymore either, controversy around every corner. It's a pick a poison era for the *current* game industry.
Honestly, if you pre-order anything with the industry in its current state you deserve everything you get
We have Nintendo releasing games that are unfinished and tiny because 'they can add more later', SEGA making broken games, Pokemon making crappy games that screws over long time fans, takes 0 IQ to even play and look like crap, EA is still making money hungry games, Ubisoft is making crappy games and stealing old games from you, Rockstar is still being negligent of their best selling game ever,
nearly all, if not all big game studios have been super crappy in the past 6+ years
No, it's ridiculous that people are okay with releasing a broken game with "free" patches. It's literally just an excuse to meet a deadline without fine tuning. And in my opinion it ruins the experience.
I think this is really unfair to Sega, a small indie studio who can barely keep a roof over their own heads. They're trying so hard to make games, and I think that should count for way more than whether they actually succeed or not. After all, these games are free, so we can't really complain!
This is a joke right?

It seems like sonic is the only game series where the rest of the companies offerings are usually pretty well wound, but sonic is the outlier in that the games are buggy messes at launch. That detailing on that hand is probably the most detail thing I've seen you make with your art.
I like the idea of reviewing games as they come in the box. If companies don't like it, they can wait until they fix the things before they ship them out.
The fact that the game adds lemon juice to the already festering wound by giving you an achievement for sitting through THE 30 PLUS MINUTE CREDIT SEQUENCE really goes to show that even the developers and Sega themselves decided to throw us a bone because they knew how much of a slog the credits of Colors Ultimate were gonna be.
I very much agree with reviewing games the way they release, first impression is what makes the sales, not the product 3 years after the game has been out. I'm sick and tired of games being released in unfinished states, you know, at the very least Sonic 06, and Final Fantasy 13 are complete products that some people can find enjoyment in, unlike Sonic Colors Ultimate, Mario Golf Super Rush, Mario Strikers Battle League, Nintendo Switch Sports, and Sonic Forces. (All of which are very incomplete upon release)
Also, we can probably assume it's Sega's fault for the mess Colors Ultimate is, considering what happened to the Sonic Origins Collection
8:05 wait, that's a loading screen? I thought that was just a title card for acts. grew up on this game an I'm just learning this now
They have been both since the very first sonic game on the genesis.
The power of good game design, making flaws look intentional
This should never be allowed to fly. Too many companies nowadays have a mindset of profit over quality, trusting their brand name and nostalgia to propel them - BDSP and Sonic Colors Ultimate are amazing examples. BDSP was trusted to be a good game, with new features like in previous remakes, but it just wasn’t, it was shipped without a huge chunk of data, and Colors Ultimate is… well, it’s Colors Ultimate. You spent four videos explaining it, I don’t need to. Preorders are going to incentivize them. Buying the game at all is going to incentivize them. And I don’t know how to stop either of those, since the worst thing is? It **works**. Nostalgia is a huge ploy, and one that works on just about everyone. I bought Brilliant Diamond because of my nostalgia for Platinum, despite it having not even been one of the first games I played.
My point here is just… don’t buy games only based on nostalgia. Please. Wait and see if they work first.
And wasn't BDSP the buggiest Pokemon game since Gen 1?
@@LloydTheZephyrian AFAIK.
Nostalgia is some sort of "fetish" for some companies. Lazy and overused ideas and products for the childish folks who doesn't care but consumes.
No, I agree, like why release it at all if it's unfinished? I think you playing without patches is a good lesson for people, it shouldn't be happening at all. Also I know not a widely accepted opinion, but I feel the same with DLC, especially DLC if it was obviously intended for the base game, like Pokemon Sword and Shield comes to mind. The new Resident Evil 8 DLC clearly cut content or content that should've been saved for a sequel. Sometimes DLC can be good handled properly, the 1st DLC ever in a technical sense, the Sonic and Knuckles cartridge, was handled properly, but more often than not companies handle it poorly and I think it falls under similar lines. Again unpopular opinion I know, but to me an example of companies rushing out stuff and then taking advantage.
"At least Pokemon functions correctly" oh you sweet summer child. The base game of Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl doesn't even come with its soundtrack.
Ironic how there's literally a game called Sonic rush and that game is so clean.

It is completely unacceptable to release rushed, unfinished games. Especially when AAA games are being released with even higher launch prices than a couple of years ago.
In regards to "Speak With Your Heart (Rainbow Mix)", that ending part is the actual Rainbow mix song on the official soundtrack for Sonic Colors Ultimate Re-Colors. The official soundtrack contains that Rainbow Mix along with the original version of the song.
The more or less improved version you're referring to is actually a third version containing both the original and the Rainbow Mix that was exclusively used in the 30th Anniversary Symphony.

I completely agree with everything you said near the ending. I saw way too many people getting excited for Origins especially after the disaster that Colors were and low and behold Origins was a buggy mess. It's hard to believe it's almost been a whole year since this game has been released and I have to say it's really disappointing to know that there are bugs and glitches that still haven't been patched out. The most notable one is the beginning of starlight carnival where Sonic just doesn't fall into the stage he just appears after a few seconds.
I know all of this is purely anecdotal and people will have different experiences, but this makes me so glad I still have my Wii and my Wii copy of the game. I would have been severely disappointed if this was my first experience with Colors.
Also could you do a review of klonoa please. Because that game deserves a lot more recognition
Sonic’s anniversary, I’m sad to say isn’t the best it could’ve been
Man, Eggman should place overpowered dash panels more often! Certainly more effective at stopping Sonic than most of his other traps
I agree with an on release review style. Its a way to show just how lazy or lackluster games/game companies can be just to only care about it later and fix it view patches. Some people dont really see the point of things that you brought up, but for a better example, while as a whole it may not be the best when I played Shadow the hedgehog for my ps2 the sound only ever cut out when my t.v went out or when the disc was damaged. I dont see how even the simplest things that required the physical damage of the game or damaged appliances can pass on a full price release, especially on an "ultimate" release.
How did they take one of the better sonic games in recent years and find a way to fuck up even after getting a decent reputation
*Life, uh, finds a way.*
Sega, uh, finds a way.
From my understanding, it was partly Sega of Japan not giving a shit about what state the game was in and just wanting a product on store shelves for the 30th anniversary, and partly Blind Squirrel not exactly having the best track record for remasters (Bioshock Remaster) or Switch ports (WWE 2k18).
@@LordArikado so it’s everyone’s fault, woohoo… atleast it isn’t *entirely* sega this time
@@LordArikado
It's always Sega of Japan.
Why is it always the Japan branch that makes everything worse.
Love your videos Radical Soda!
I'm so happy this channel is back it's been so long before this reviews started
The saga finally concludes. How bittersweet. Great review, can't wait to rewatch all parts!
These videos are funny and good to watch. I agree with your points and to answer question at 16:05 it's unacceptable to release broken games like this no matter what the company maybe.
This series was great, and I’m really excited to see what videos you do next. That’s it, I just really like your content.
Can't wait to see him suffer through Origins...
Things like this, makes me happy sonic adventure 2 never got a “remastered” or “ultimate” version. I still have my GameCube and my Wii, my controllers still work, and I still have my memory card. I will continue to enjoy that.
Well technically Sonic adventure 2 battle did get a port for PS3 and Xbox 360 as well as PC back in 2012 but like Sonic colors ultimate has issues that make it worse than the original specifically the sound mixing.
@@GenerationZ313 I was oblivious to that knowledge, and now I’m upset…
@@shadowsonshadowson3929 Don't be, you still own the best version of the game
@@honeckr1497 unless you had or played that version, you trippin my guy
@@shadowsonshadowson3929 People are such graphics whores over the Battle version.
He has no hope in sega I agree I love this guy he shares my thoughts on Sega and if you think this games bad just wait till you play frontiers.
These videos get better and better
I haven't watched your videos in about 4 years now. I'm happy that your videos are still just as good as they used to be!
