Shemp was first. Back when they were with Ted Healy then he left to have his own career and then Curly came along then Shemp returned when Curly got too ill.

Later on Ted manages to get Moe and Larry back but Shemp left the act and was replaced by Curly. Meanwhile the Gentelmaniacs were still doing their act in a small handful of films during the late 30s and early 40s.
