Back in those days we used to mail software all the time because it was cheaper AND faster than the bandwidth. Even if you were just sharing something with your close friend, a lot of the time it was just easier to give it to them in person. Sometimes you could find little clubs where people would send stuff back and forth and you could get some nice software that way. Yup. Bandwidth costs and speed were laughably slow and sometimes it was hard to find coal to put into the back of the computer.

Your Honor, thanks for making this video. I was floored when I saw the name Karl Koch in a title on UA-cam.
I was a hacker contemporary of those folks and got to make the acquaintance of some of the other players to whom you alluded. You did a credible job of covering one of the weirdest chapters in black/grey hat hacker history.
Some of us in America had friends in various hacking circles in Europe, and to say that the European hackers were usually WAY more political in various ways than we were would be an understatement.
It was a weird time. Every country with the best networks has incidents of young people getting busted for various misdeeds only to mysteriously be set free, or in the case of one country I remember in the Middle East, getting arrested and then mysteriously being on Internet Relay Chat for what seemed like 24 hours a day even though they were supposed to be in their compulsory military service. Just sayin'. Don't be too hard on the glowies - every country had them, and sometimes they were quite young. Don't even get me started about the French kids.
You're right though, even in the midst of a certain moral flexibility relating to their main pastime, one of the things I observed was a certain streak of mild patriotism almost regardless of where these folks were. Sure, we might aspire fnord to a more anarchic future, but back then none of us wanted to live under the Warsaw Pact who weren't already.
Cliff Stoll was a delightful man back then, but the poor guy was besieged for years by people who wanted to talk to him about hacking when all he wanted to do was talk about adaptive optics.
The good news is that I'd like to think that most of we feral Gen X hacker kids turned out OK. The 90s were a silly time of major corporations gruffly proclaiming "they'd never hire hackers" when their ranks were full of people who also lived under pseudonyms on bulletin board systems while staying up all night. We had lists. :)
Thanks for teaching real history, brother. If you ever get to Las Vegas in August, come to DEF CON. I doubt you'd ever have to pay for a beer.
    Cheers!

Usually German films besides of topic concerning our history are lame crap, Hollywood and British films and series of all kind are way better. I already believe it was suicide. Because who would have wanted to kill him? His accomplices just weren't the types for that. And I also think it's unlikely that he was eliminated by the secret services, because the data provided was simply too irrelevant for that.
Karl was depressed, psychotic, addicted to drugs and desperate. And he often announced his suicide among his friends. Incidentally, in exactly the same way, self-immolation.

Fun Fact: Computers were extremely affordable in the 1980s, and not "luxury items". In many cases, computers were cheaper in inflation-adjusted terms than a PC is today.
The difference is: they weren't as Popular. Thus the "nerd" stigma until PCs became popular due to 1. VGA Graphics (porn), 2. (3D) games like DOOM, and 3. The Internet.

    • @virtualwastrel

Actually no, 5 seconds of googling gave me an average price of a home computer in 1982 being $530 usd at the lowest possible configuration and manufacturer name. Which adjusted for inflation is well over $1,000 usd. That is not affordable or the average price of computers at the moment. A gaming rig or mac is not what everyone buys and uses. They also are very expensive to the average person.

    • @GeneralKenobiSIYE
      @GeneralKenobiSIYE 7 місяців тому +13

Right, that's why a high end laptop went for around $9,000 in today's money, adjusted for inflation, and I could get a high end gaming laptop for only $3,000 today. Costs have come down as power has exploded. If the pricing went backwards, by scale this laptop would cost me $1,200 back then. It really shows how far prices have come down compared to computing power.

Growing up I used to hack road signs with the light up displays. They were unlocked and the password was 0000
Went to work for Circle K. Many of their stores didn’t change the gas controls password from “admin”
Also, 4 digit combination locks can be cracked in 30 minutes or less if there is no penalty for incorrect guesses. This surprised the police when I walked into the back door of their station. They didn’t believe I could do it.

Thanks so much for this video. Back in the 90's I was a big fan of a live radio show, West Coast Weekend, hosted by Sedge Thompson. I happened to be in the audience the time Clifford was interviewed. One little thing you missed, Clifford is also a physicist. It was one of the most interesting interviews I've ever listened to. I have his book. The Cuckoo's Egg on my to be read shelf. BTW, Clifford is a very gentle childlike person. I don't think he would ever want anyone to be murdered.

46:20 Former EMT here, you don't need a lot of petrol for a body to be burned to the bone. You just need for the fire to reach some fat tissues which basically means the first two layers of skin. The moment the fat catches fire, it burn really fast, it becomes extremely difficult to put out and you burn until there is no more fat or until the fire is put out.
