Dale Clevenger Masterclass - Horn - Hindemith: Sonata - Lebhaft

Masterclass with Professor Dale Clevenger in which they work on the second movement of Paul Hindemith's Sonata for horn and piano. This masterclass took place at the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía, Madrid 2007.

Abstract:
Clevenger comments that the character is lighter and more elegant, not as much as a march. The sound we produced should not be so complicated, but easy and elegant. In this work there are reminiscences of jazz that should be noticed. There must be more contrasts which highlight the conversation between voices, and the brain must always be active to prepare these moments. The Professor tells an anecdote about Daniel Barenboim: he began to understand Mozart's concerts and sonatas since the moment he began to conduct opera, as each vocal melody was contained in the rest of the works. There is always a story behind each melody, it is not just notes. Each note is part of the story. In addition, Clevenger corrects issues of dynamics, articulation and rhythm, keeping in mind the idea to look always for contrast.
