What a fantastic video! You're wonderful at explaining all of the tips and tricks and pros and cons. I've yet to grow the balls to trim and edge a deck, but I think you've just encouraged me to give it a go! I've been eyeballing the Wisdom of the Oracle deck, but the borders and glossy stock were deterring me. Contact paper, trim and edging in order! Thank you also for acknowledging the Canadians who tune in by giving us the Amazon.ca links! Very thoughtful.

Just a warning, once you start, it can get a bit addicting (and fun!). Thanks for the terrific feedback. Sadhana

Great video! A quick tip regarding the slide trimmers: if you don't change the blade a couple times while trimming a deck the blade will get dull and start to push the edges up. However, you can easily correct this by sliding the rounded bottom of a metal spoon over the edges to flatten them back out. I only use slide cutters like yours here and that's what I do with all mine. You're less likely to have this issue with a guillotine (the kind of cutter that has a blade on a handle that chops downward), although the good quality kind are pretty expensive.

Great tips. The slide cutter I commented on in the video was new and a fail from the first few cards. Perhaps it was not new. Appreciate your feedback!

Technically this is not a guillotine. It's what I call a trimmer. The one with a full blade and a handle is. I first bought a trimmer and was never satisfied with the result, got in similar trouble than you and changing the blades can get expensive. So I invested in a small guillotine with a very reasonable price tag and this does a perfect job.

Yes, you are correct - sliding blade one is a trimmer, guillotine can chop a lot more than paper ;)

The first deck I trimmed I borrowed someone's guillotine and had good results, then she loaned me a trimmer instead and it ruined the cards as it did for Sadhana. So I went out and bought a guillotine cutter and am going to attempt to take off just enough to smooth them out again.

Thanks for the interesting look at your trimmed decks. I don't think you lose energy from trimming the borders off the decks. I think the energy is in you and if the deck reads better than that's what is important.

The Druidcraft was the first deck that I trimmed. I trimmed it because I did not like the white border, but also the cards were printed not straight and it bothered me. But I kept the green-marble looking border that most everyone else trims off too and I really like it like that. I think it looks better and looks like framed prints. It cut to the gold line on the backs, which is ok. At least the fronts and backs lined up! Then I edged it in gold metallic.

This is super helpful, thanks! I'm going with scissors, and seeing how you've been able to improve the Art of Love Tarot and the Tarot of the Sidhe, along with other decks I have, is great. I was so sad to see that the Crystal Visions Tarot is matte now though! That was one I messed up, and I always thought I'd repurchase it when I had time.

I have had such a hard time with the dye ink (the harder pad) going over and staining my cards. It seems to dry instantly with no way to wipe it off even when wiping the card immediately. I always use the pigment ink with the squishy pad and wipe the card after. It has come out perfect every time. Thank you for all of the tips. Your explanations are very clear.

I bought that same cutter and tested it on a pack of playing cards and it was terrible! I couldn’t hold the card still no matter how much force I applied. The blade just got stuck in the card. I’m thinking I’ll try a swinging arm guillotine next but am worried about getting the edge lined up correctly.

I am going to buy a guillotine also. The brand I am looking at is Dahle. The 13 3/8" is the smallest size. It's expensive, so thinking and researching a bit more.

18:50 Honestly, it looks like you cut or edged them that way on purpose. It has a sort of rustic & artistic look. The basic blue is kind of boring, but the dark edges make them look very moody. The partial border is unique -- I mean, how many deck backs look like that? It has character & tbh I have been wanting to do something like this on one of my decks. Not just the backs, but the edges too. I want to edge part of the upper deck in one color, but as I move down, to give it an ombre/distressed look. You can fix it how you want, if that look isn't your thing. But if it was me, I'd go over that section with sand paper to really give it that distressed ashy look -- sort of like you ritually cleansed it over a candle for years & the burn marks developed over time. Does that make sense? Anyway, it looks way cool.

I just know that one day I'm going to try edging and I shake like a leaf. Plus cutting borders. I don't know..
I should never do any of it but I just know I'll get it in my head that I can do it one day and I'll end up with ink blot cards. 🤣
