  • Here is how I made a recon Bowie knife. I got inspiration from the SOG knives that were issued during the Vietnam war to MACV-SOG groups.

    Here is my take on the Bowie knives which were issued to MACV-SOG Special Forces groups during the Vietnam War. These knives were always sterile to avoid them being tracked to units and countries. These mostly came in 6 inch variants, however there were some manufacturers that offered them in 7 inch blades. The one I constructed was based off the classic 6 inch recon fighters.

    Stock removal versus foraging I’m intrigued to know your opinion

    • @dogslobbergardens6606
      @dogslobbergardens6606 2 роки тому

      Foraging for steel is a bad idea unless you're genuinely broke and have no other choice. You'll be better off just buying nice clean new steel. Old springs and whatnot often have all kinds of tiny cracks in them, and you don't really know what the heck you're dealing with in terms of heat-treat.

    • @dogslobbergardens6606
      @dogslobbergardens6606 2 роки тому

      All teasing aside, the biggest advantage of forging is that you can get different/more complex shapes out of a given piece of steel. With stock removal you can only make a knife out of the shape that's already there... you can't stretch it out or push it into wide curves, etc.
      Despite what anyone on TV or the web tells you, you are *not* making O1 or 10xx or any other modern steel any better by heating and hammering on it repeatedly. In fact, every step of the way you're taking a chance on making the steel worse.
      A bar of modern steel is as "forged" and "grain-refined" as it's ever going to get the day it leaves the mill; a human's spindly little arm and teeny little hammer cannot accomplish anything that huge rolling mills didn't. All that stuff about edge-packing and drawing out/compressing the grain comes from the deep dark past when folks were using bloomery steel or wrought iron.
