In my personal opinion Darryl Kuylo is a better dub actor for Kiryu than Yong Yea.

it's really not, and I say this as someone that doesn't hate or dislike Yong Yea but the voice clips that he posted recently it's literally just him and his normal voice it sounds nothing like Kiryu or even an attempt.@@troyX
I'm very open to Yong's voice personally, this wasn't the best example i feel and it'll most likely sound better in the final product. People jump to conclusions too fast i feel. Also; Kuroda-San IS kiryu, there is no denying that. But personally, I’m open to other interpretations. Plus Yong definitely has the passion and care so that’s a great start.
Strangely, in my opinion, Yong sounds way closer to Kuroda-San than Kiryu has ever been in English before, so I’ll have to see.
I agree. I think Daryl has a cool voice but he misses the mark on some of the emotional elements of Kuroda's performance. Kiryu isn't just some deep voiced guy like how Darryl portrays him sometimes. And clearly from the trailers from Gaiden Kiryu has to express a lot of emotion. I welcome the change but I'm not disrespecting the guy's acting ability as I'm not too familiar with him outside of LAD. I'll also add It's way different to hear voice actors doing a line in a convention on a loud microphone in comparison to a voice actor in a booth with a director and sound engineers. Maybe people just have beef cause of Yong's channel idk.

One thing that Yong is really good at are his grunts and fighting noises. Shirakaba (Yong's role in Kaito files) has genuinely really good shouting/grunts/moans for Eng dub. So if anything, there are moments for him to shine in Gaiden.

Honestly I am going into the Yakuza series because of Yong Yea.
I just see the english dub as an accessibility feature tbh. But aight.
I still think that Darryl did a better job on his Yakuza 7 dubbing. It was the only time I switched to English dub just to hear Kiryu's voice during that rumble scene. But then again, Yong did a highlight reel for his 2-year experience as a VA, and I gotta say, he did a good job with some of his roles, especially Pucci and White Snake. Either way, I'm still sticking with the original Japanese dubbing since it has been the norm ever since I played my first Yakuza game.

Up until this very moment, I never knew that there was an English dub in the Yakuza Franchise, I always thought it was a full Japanese voice game with Different languages on the interface :O
original game had an english dub... then no dubs one wards... recent ones I think had dub... but dont know anyone who used it.
Keep in mind guys. This is at a panel. Voice actors doing voices on the fly sometimes don’t come out the way they want.

Actualyl i think he sounds good when speaking imitating Kuroda's japanese voice at the beginning (nani, hisashiburi da na...kasuga), not sure why they just don't let him do that.

@commandertakasu3841 no his Japanese imitations are the same as his English one's. His voice is just considerably lighter and lacks the aged texture of the old dub

While I'll say yong is doing the best he can and I don't mind his casting, I feel like both for fun and sound wise he would kill it with a majima role. But that's just me though again I'm glad Yakuza 's still thriving
he sounds more like Junichi Suwabe than kuroda, but still good japanese from him.
I actually prefer this over the original dub voice, but Takaya Kuroda will always be the only Kiryu I hear.

This was a live recording of the panel where Yong gave a sample of his voice in a not very sound controlled environment. You should all wait until there's an official English trailer or until the game is officially out then feel free form your own opinions. Thank you!

And the game isn't even out yet so who knows, maybe he'll sound better once we can actually hear his performance in-game
Its not official voice yet. No recordings or dub trailer yet. Yet everyone thinks it is but it not.
IN FACT, Darryl Kurylo replied to a question on Twitter about being recasted and this is what he said, "I am very happy and honored to have portrayed a wonderfully written and iconic character as Kiryu. I am just as happy to have discovered that the role will be portrayed by a dedicated actor who more closely matches Kiryu's culture. I strongly approve."

Its weird that you try to force people into this, this voice acting is garbage and majority feel this way.
I know people are saying he wouldn't be a good older Kiryu, but what people don't really think about, is AUDIO MANIPULATION. They could edit his voice lines to make his voice sound deeper, or make his voice sound more like an older guy. I personally am just proud that YongYea is living his deam.

The engineers will basically have to create an entirely new voice. It’ll have to be heavily edited for sure.

This is one of those rare RGG L's. Darryl Kurylo was perfect. Had that older voice that matched his age. I hope they at least offered him the role, but he discovered it, which means they didn't. I'm generally shocked they did this. He will likely do poorly, he's decent, but he won't come close to the uniqueness of Darryl's voice. Now he'll sound generic; such a shame.
But there's always Takaya Kuroda. I was actually looking forward to the dubs, but after this, Gaiden is sub for sure. I'll bear it for Infinite Wealth because I'm so used to Ichiban and everyone's English VAs.

Ironically enough, my favourite english kiryu voice is kuroda's ai voice.
Kiryu kinda has the optimus prime syndrome where the og voice is so iconic for so long it's hard seeing anyone else taking the role without drastically altering the character.
Yong will have very big shoes to fill in this role and as good as darryl was in 7, idk if even he can capture kiryu's dynamic voice in a lead role as compared to taking a back seat in 7.
Ichiban on the other hand is more of a blank slate where you can work with and i do love kaiji's portrayal of hin

With stuff I’ve read and seen of interviews and the rgg livestream from when they announced her as the winner of the casting, it seems like her appearance was mostly crafted by her, as she would suggest stuff to the team and they honestly thought that the stuff she suggested sometimes was better than what they had made for her.

Lol the english dub doesn't exist only the jap dub. I respect Kuroda for defending him but if it was a good performance he wouldn't need to defend him it would speak for itself. Say what ever you will of Kiefer or Hayter both nailed it and loved playing the character with every line spoken. Yong just sounds like a fan dub.

I was there live for this panel. Not only do I think Yong would do a great job portraying Kiryu, but after watching this panel live nothing excites me more to see how honored he is to accept it. Most of you will be playing the JP version anyways.
