At uni we call playing Giant Steps as a bossa "Baby Steps". I mean not to detract from how good this guy is at all. I'm sure he crushes it at all tempos.
Everyone hears what is familiar to them. I hear Scott Henderson's tremolo technique and phrasing being used all over this piece. We all have a mix of undeniable influences in our playing styles. More than anything... I'm hearing Matteo Mancuso 👍🙂
The Henderson tremolo technique is there start to finish. In some parts Scott Henderson's phrasing is undeniable and Scott's phrasing can't be done without the use of that trem technique. Some of the single note runs without the use of the tremolo are all Matteo (which are both beautiful and staggering🤯) I agree with others here. Matteo is incredibly talented and unique. I can listen to him play for hours!He is among the top guitarists of his generation. Matteo....please give us a recording project. The world is patiently waiting👍

I'm pretty aware that it's "part of the language", and that he's one of the big masters of it, yeah... but we're discussing MELODY here, not spicy bebop phrasing. I've heard lots of versions, including (since we're with guitars here) Pat Metheny, one of the most melodic jazz virtuosos IMO... and it was kind of a let down.

This has such a unique blend of so many guitar players, it’s safe to say this is YOUR sound. Seriously, couldn’t be more impressed, and absolutely couldn’t be more jealous of those chops

Class... Matteo, you have this "signature" of the greats, beyond your magic mastery of instrument, this insane rythmic placement and accuracy. And taste, great lines, always melodic and so much more... If we slow down the tempo your lines are great, another "signature" of the greats. Bravo Maestro !

You're such a versatile and original player. At times, it's easy to compare you with Holdsworth, and of course, Holdsworth with Coltrane, so this is great to observe and a very interesting choice.

All of these musicians are exploring atonality, and speaking the language and revealing it with their own voices. Another way to describe it is abstract expressionism, as with Schoenberg and Berg through music, or as Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko paralleled visually. It seems to be a form of automatism outpouring from the unconscious. That Matteo is exposing and modeling this space through his own vision is marvelous and helpful for us to better understand it, in addition to the evolution of his voice and body of work. I'd love to hear his thoughts about this. I'd also be interested to hear his rendition of an impressionist piece, or even better, an original impression. Though I suppose all of his originals could be considered impressions.
amazing player with world class technique and limitless potential. looking forward to what happens as he matures as a composer and hopefully learns how to save his speed for special moments to serve the music. it would be unfortunate if he got stuck in the shred pigeonhole.

As an example do you consider Coltrane's "Giant steps" atonal ? It's not. Just 3 tonic system. Also, point out wher is Matteo playing or "exploring atonality" ? LOL. I think it's safe to say that you may be the best out there. Your note selection & phrasing is totally unique. There are definite nods to Scott Henderson, but your voicings are your own; so good!

Strong at 0:35 right? It isn't just the tremolo technique there, the outline of the phrase itself has a Scott Henderson flavor to it.
