I love how the media is just running with "EF-3" for its headlines. EF-3 damage does not look like that. All walls collapsed, slabbed foundations, debarked trees etc. is not necessarily indicative of EF-5 damage, but it is most certainly EF-4. The NWS is just so conservative these days because they're retooling the scale. Dr. Fujita himself probably would've immediately classified this as F5 back in the day. Obv we know more now, but it's just frustrating.
Agreed, absolutely no way this isn’t EF4, and EF5 could be possible, but I feel like they’ve become incredibly strict on rating Tornadoes EF5 lately

The NWS survey team was in the area. EF 3 may just be a preliminary rating meaning all the damage is at LEAST consistent with winds that occur at the level of EF 3. A second survey would assess more damaged areas that would indicate damage being more consistent to higher winds. A manufactured home can be pulverized in an EF1 They look at how well the house was constructed and whether walls were bolted to foundations or simply nailed to footers. There's a lot of construction variables. During boom times especially post WWII, housing tracts were quickly slapped together with minimal building codes. Once a roof is ripped away by winds, poorly constructed structures will collapse in lesser wind speeds than a more sturdy structure whose walls may still be standing with the roof missing because they were anchored to the foundation better. A trailer park with all manufactured homes set on a base of cinder blocks on a pad, would be obliterated by an EF2 EF3 because if the thin and cheap materials they are made with. They have to be within a certain weight to trailer them on the highways so thinner and lighter materials are used. . Standard in a stick built house is 2 x 4s and 2 x 6s. You'd be pressed to find a manufacturered trailer home with more than a 2 x 3" wall stud. Again, there are many factors going into giving a rating. Doesn't need to be an EF 5 to blow down a bunch of cheap poorly built houses. Housing tracts of the 1960s brings to mind the song "Little Boxes" by Pete Seeger.

I saw this Tornado live while watching a livestream chase. My continued thoughts and prayers go out to those who lost loved ones and for those who lost their homes and businesses.
Living through this economy has completely crippled the middle class. God bless the people fund raising to help these familys. We have a chance of tornadoes this Sunday and i dont know what we will do if we lose everything. Pray for our country my fellow Americans. We can survive and thrive when we come together as one.

Modern news all emotions and few facts. How many wind turbines were lost in this one tornado? How many businesses? How many homes? How many wind turbines have been lost to weather this year?
The Greenfield, Iowa tornado was rated an EF-4 with estimated wind speeds of 175 mph - 185 mph.

Yeah, this was definitely an EF4 or better.
NWS says preliminary findings. Path 44 miles. That was traveling quite some distance before it cut a few blocks wide path through the SE corner of Greenfield. News makes it sound like the entire town of Greenfield was wiped off the map. Width is 1000 yards most of Greenfield was unscathed. The governor declared it a disaster area so Adair County EMS and FEMA will come with assistance to haul off the debris and clear streets and get electricity restored and set up housing and funding so people can rebuild their homes or set another single-wide or double-wide manufactured home back on pads they were on existed before the tornado hit

There's nowhere in Idaho that's 2200 miles from Greenfield.
So many people in the Southern ad Midwest states telling encounters in the harrowing midst of the tornado directly at their houses and their stupid dogs run upstairs into the storm and put their owners lives at risk! So frustrating to hear these stories of stupid dogs.
