- a short video that shows how planet Earth was formed and its collision with planet Theia from which Moon was born (which then was much closer to Earth). millions of years after Earth is still bombed by meteorites that carry water, but till then Earth was cool enough to have a crust, so pools of water grow. and later life.

0:15- Bits of rock start to clump together. Thanks gravity!

1:55- Gravity from Theia pulls the surface of Earth out of shape just before impact.

2:05- Both planets start to fuse into one. The shock wave caused material to blast off the surface into space.
2:30- The material is now in orbit around the Earth, forming a ring around the planet.
2:40- The material clumps together over millions of years, forming our moon.
3:10- More material from the Solar System impacts the Earth, some even bring water.
4:08- Our Moon has been formed, our orbital path cleared, all is good. Science, it works bitches!

+QBlue W: What made the earth round basically comes down to gravity. I'm not an expert so if there's an expert out there, correct me if I'm wrong! Once an object reaches a certain size, it gathers enough gravitational pull to literally pull itself into the most efficient shape, which in this case because it is spinning and rotating the most efficient shape is a sphere. Once the object reaches this point it is said to have reached hydrostatic equilibrium. Same with the moon, only because the moon is not covered by water and land, we see all the craters, evidence of the late heavy bombardment or lunar cataclysm. A popular theory is that this could have happened when some of the gas giants changed orbits thus pushing an enormous amount of asteroids from the asteroid and Kuiper belt towards us. Earth also had tons of these craters, they've just mostly disappeared by now through tectonic plate movement. It is, again theorized, that a lot of the silver, platinum and other precious metals found on earth came from these asteroids when they hit earth. Or so I've read.
