Simple but affective. Glad to see your fingernail also hits the strings. My fingernail(s) also turn black when I have been playing rhythm especially for an extended time.
Hi, to avoid different strings when picking you have to practice slowly, also check Christiaan Van Hemert video on right hand technique, he gives some exercises that help

I think they're actually 3mm, but seems they're the ones you mean. Have you seen my new Jazz and Gypsy Jazz Mastery Course? You can get it now for free! Click here: www.gypsyandjazz.com/gj-guitar-mastery-sign-up?
Excellent technique illustrated for holding. Now when you hit the string, is it still angled down, is the tip of the pick or more side of pick used and it also seems to be angled if you look from above ie is tip of pick pointing at 90 degree angle to guitar or angled more. Possibly being a bit nerdy here but any advice welcome here as my strum is very angled to allow pick not to get stuck but then tone not so good for picking.

Sounds that you are on the right track my friend!
don't do it too much otherwise your fingernail will grind and get thing and never recover.
I often hit wrong strings randomly When I do float picking ! How to avoid that happen? THank you for great introduction about pick holding.
And I saw many famous players to do down stroke with anchoring their ring and pinky fingers on the guitar board.
Sloan Zhang people down pick with an open hand to reduce tension I think.

The pick is angled down, more than 90 degrees and the the pick should be loose and slightly move when you play. Hope that helps. Cheers
