Before buying Chromecast, I watched the many tutorials on UA-cam. This one is, by far, the BEST. However, I have a laptop and I would have welcomed a bit more explanation on how to set up a laptop. This tutorial was more for android users. Thank you, Mr. DetroitBORG!
Very nice Mike. I really liked your unboxing and set up of the chromecast. I would look forward to buy one and have this great device sharing experience.
Brilliant review! Cheers Mike, it was a bit of a toss up between a Chromecast, a Roku or simply a lightning to HDMI cable for my iPad. This made me get the Chromecast, as I can use it in my bedroom as well.
Think I will defiantly purchase a couple of these for around the house, I love my Apple TV and will eventually put one everywhere but for the meantime this will be great!
Thanks for the demo. I can now see how it works and I had some doubts about the chromecast before I saw this review about it but now, I can see how it works and that it works smoothly. Thanks so much for your review
That's actually a fairly decent product... and a fantastic review. Very thorough, almost like an instruction manual! If it supported things like FireFox then I'd perhaps consider getting one, but being locked into Chrome-only is a huge no.
So glad you made this video I will be getting this as a Christmas gift to myself. I was hesitant because I didn't know if I would like it but it is pretty cool. Thanks and I subscribe :)
Nice review, you are the best doing this reviews, I think that the chromecast is a perfect complement to enjoy you Internet media on your tv, the only bad thing it is if you don't have a good Internet conection could be slowly see your content. Whatever thanks mike and greetings
Impressive!! Will consider it soon as it supports broadcasting anything on my PC (Surface Pro). For now, I'm satisfied with a $3.50 wired HDMI cable and Mobile Mouse Pro for my freed iPhone...
This thing is awesome! It streams Netflix, UA-cam and Google Play Movies flawlessly! It even mirrors everything from Chrome browser which Apple TV can't do and it's way cheaper and it can stream not only for iOS but Android, and PC.
Hi, Mike, I liked your video presentation but i missed one part. How would you rate the picture quality; lets say on a scale 1-10. As I tried connection my HTC One to a TV with MHL cable, but picture quality just isn't there. I'd rate it 4-5 out of 10. Very grainy. Your grade would definitely decide whether I'm purchasing this product, or not. Thanks, Marko
I hope you won't take offense, please... the directions in the box last November could not help me and youtube helpers weren't around so I returned the 35 dollar devece. My windows 7 now has a HDMI cable to view youtube on the TV screen. Are all the videos up really because cromecast IS easy to install ?
Definitely cool, would buy it myself, but still selling to a limited market. You are only use it on an HDTV what about those who don't have it. Well Roku thought about it and even on their cheapest version they have a HDMI and component. Congratulations to Google for developing this 5 years too late. Too bad I'm a huge Google fan and love everything they do. Just bought a Roku before, and don't want two devices that do the same thing.
I hesitated to buy until the day after release. Now I have to wait for stock on amazon. My gs4 already controls all my av equipment. This will make things even simpler with one device to rule them all.
It's $99, £99 and €109. It's a reasonably priced little box at all those price points even if we do pay more here in Europe (but this is hardly anything new). You don't need Apple devices to use it either, you can use it entirely independent of anything beyond the TV you plug it into and the internet connection you join it to unlike this Chromecast, which requires you to have at least some kind of computer running OS X, Windows or Chrome OS which will be more than the $64 saving.
Apple TV has the advantage of using a traditional remote and menu system. This thing relies entirely on external devices in order to actually use it. While the Apple TV also makes use of external devices, they simply add value to it and give it more options in what you can use it for. You can own an Apple TV and never have to even connect it to anything but your TV and the internet as it'll stream all of your iTunes/Netflix content and so on. An iTunes library PC/Mac on the network is a bonus.
You say that like $99 is some extortionate amount of money given all it can do, especially if you have other Apple devices that take advantage of it. It's a fantastic bit of kit and it's only getting better as time goes on and they integrate it with more and more things. Being able to use it as an extended display with Mavericks will be brilliant for cutting down on cable clutter, not to mention the distance it can be from your machine. Great for laptops.
If you have a console than you don't need this, your console can do the same exact with your phone. You can find UA-cam videos on your phone or tablet and play it on your tv.
Could we get a good comparison between this and the Apple TV? I understand that when you are very invested in the Apple ecosystem an Apple TV is usually recommended, but say what if you dont really use the Airplay option, or another big thing about the Apple TV, what then?
You can use the Apple TV without having to rely on an external device like a phone, tablet or computer. You get added benefits from doing so, but it isn't required. You can just plug it into your TV with an internet connection and away you go. This thing is 100% reliant on you owning an Android or iOS phone/tablet or a PC/Mac/Chromebook running Chrome, which many people will have, but it's hardly as convenient as turning it on and browsing the menu of a self contained unit.
I remember the days of SCART where simply turning the device on would make it the automatic master feed! It was great being able to just turn on my PS1 and have it take over the screen without needing to switch input lol. Just change the channel from AV (usually 0) to whatever you wanted if you wanted to watch something else. That's about the only thing I miss about the SCART days lol. Everything else sucked quality wise compared to now.
or you can use your HTC One IR blaster for your home theatre using apps like peel. Samsung Watchon on GSIV has a lockscreen widget (i don't know about peel), so basically you can control all (or most) of your stuff via lockscreen
Should you pull out the Chromecast from the TV when you're not using it? Mine kind of just "hangs" there and I wonder if it could hurt the device in the long run. Thoughts?
I have a question. Im planning go buy one and I checked my TV for a USB port. It only has a Service Port USB. What if I plug the USB into like a DirecTV DVR Box since that has a USB port. Could it work?
I just bought one today, my only problem that it gets really hot and was messing with the antenna signal, I was able to mirror my nexus 7 with lollipop which was cool idea for Google to allow it on a cheap device.
Looks all great but I do have some questions: 1) can i stream the desktop from my pc to my tv (Spotify/VLC for example) or just my Chrome browser? 2) can i also install netflix on this stick or streams it only from my Netflixaccount on my phone?
Good info. Looks like a useful device without a lot of clutter except for having to plug it in also comments on You Tube videos still works on Mac Book but not on my PC, Google + still has me confused which is the main reason I put a comment here after wasting a whole day trying to get you tube to work right on my PC.
I have a dumb question... I just got this for a Christmas gift. When we are not able to attend church our church streams it LIVE on line...so my question is with the Google Chromecast can I view the live service on our TV once it is all hooked up.. or wont this work?
Yep. Using the google chrome web browser, open up web page the service is being streamed on, and cast it to the television with the google cast extension :)
Before buying Chromecast, I watched the many tutorials on UA-cam. This one is, by far, the BEST. However, I have a laptop and I would have welcomed a bit more explanation on how to set up a laptop. This tutorial was more for android users. Thank you, Mr. DetroitBORG!
R.I.P Chromecast
2013-2024
You were the best media streamer…
is it dead what hapened
@@SmallHappyOtterYes it died. Because Google wanted to make the Google TV Streamer to replace the Chromecast so the Chromecast got discontinued.

I could not have asked for anymore information after watching this. Even got some which i didn't think i needed. Awesome review!!
Congrats Mike! Your HDTV is now fully NSA-Google certified, 24/7 spying is enabled automatically no extra setup is required.
Very nice Mike. I really liked your unboxing and set up of the chromecast. I would look forward to buy one and have this great device sharing experience.
DetroitBorg definitely has the best reviews.
Brilliant review! Cheers Mike, it was a bit of a toss up between a Chromecast, a Roku or simply a lightning to HDMI cable for my iPad.
This made me get the Chromecast, as I can use it in my bedroom as well.
Google Chromecast HDMI Streaming Media Player sale on: amzn.to/1cECbSK
For 35 bucks, this is a steal. Tue usb cable, adapter, and hdmi extender could cost you good 5 to 10 bucks already. Good video!
Think I will defiantly purchase a couple of these for around the house, I love my Apple TV and will eventually put one everywhere but for the meantime this will be great!
You can. You have to use the power plug, given inside the box, to power up the chromecast via external power supply.
Your videos are highly addictive.
So glad you made this video I will be getting this as a Christmas gift to myself. I was hesitant because I didn't know if I would like it but it is pretty cool. Thanks and I subscribe :)
Only you can make a 12 minute video on the chromecast :) Love your vids!
Since I was lucky to get mine on clearance, this was the best $25 I spent in a long time :)
I just bought one on Groupon for 20.00, I hope I like it!
Nice review, you are the best doing this reviews, I think that the chromecast is a perfect complement to enjoy you Internet media on your tv, the only bad thing it is if you don't have a good Internet conection could be slowly see your content. Whatever thanks mike and greetings

Took mine back actually and got the roku 3 ...a lot more channels
Congrats, Nick! You obviously have no idea how the device works! It's no more dangerous to privacy than owning a mobile phone/tablet.
I won't lie I just subbed cause TLD told me to but! Your videos look great and I will stay subbed!
Google is killing it! This thing is amazing! Just waiting for a Canadian release. Unless I win the contest ... haha
This video was what I was waiting for! Awesome Chromecast review.
Ive been wanting the Nexus tablet ever since it was released!!
A makeshift remote control? This product is a must-want!
I was interesting in getting a chrome cast but after watching this very informative video I rather get a WD media box or the sort. :D

Wow! Watching this video made me want the Chromecast even more. Great video!
I am going to buy this for my tv and the tv in my living room this saves so much time from turning on my xbox
Cant wait for this to hit on the Philippines.
This video automatically opens up "Hey Google"
Awesome review, thanks! Going to pick mine up today!
It mirrors EVERYTHING, even flash video, from your Chrome browser!
Nice videos i always prefer DetroitBORG
Awesome unboxing mike
nice small device which is more sophisticated than the others.
Seems pretty useful and interesting device

Hope you would review the Sony Experia Z Ultra... No body can justify the product the way you do.
Your videos are the best I really like them
By the way:are you doing a review on iOS7 because your reviews are more specific
Mike great video, as always. I got this and it works great, but can I cast the chrome web browser from my phone also? Or only from a laptop. Thanks.
the time between u click on ur phone/tablet/pc to the chromecast depends that on your connection of ur internet or it will be always there?

Great video! Can you stream from the Chrome iOS app or just the full Chrome web browser on your laptop?
You can stream from you iOS device and your browser
Hey ! by any chance, Are you going to do a Unboxing & Review of Leap Motion ?
Should you pull out the Chromecast from the TV when you're not using it? Mine kind of just "hangs" there and I wonder if it could hurt the device in the long run. Thoughts?
Been waiting for this review since I heard this thing happen!
I have a question. Im planning go buy one and I checked my TV for a USB port. It only has a Service Port USB. What if I plug the USB into like a DirecTV DVR Box since that has a USB port. Could it work?
Also I forgot to mention that my TV does have a HDMI port but no USB Slot.
If you're streaming HD content why would you use a non-HDTV? Seems a bit redundant don't you think?
How about a review on your camera? Or a "Behind the Scenes"/bloopers type video.
Great video and review, Mike. Thanks.
thanks for the review i wanted to buy it now i will buy it. it is awesome
you dont need any type of wifi to connect ?
Wonder what people still use this original version for
Would it be possible to stream a video to your TV in one tab and then for example, do a google search in a different tab?
Yep. The tab being cast to televison is the only one that will show up on your TV
Hey Mike, when are you going to un-box the Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom?
Does it require from the tv to be smart tv? Or it can work on whatever TVs?
I just bought one today, my only problem that it gets really hot and was messing with the antenna signal, I was able to mirror my nexus 7 with lollipop which was cool idea for Google to allow it on a cheap device.
If it's CEC compatible, why can't you control the streaming from your TV remote or in your case the Harmony remote set to the TV function?
I've not seen a way to hook this up through a chromecast to an older tv with rca inputs. Do such adaptations even exist?
Dude your channel rocks!
Hey Detroit I'd really appreciate it if u could get a review on the moto x
Great video, thorough and informative, thank you!
What's the better buy the Amazon Fire TV or the Google Chromecast.
I just bought google Chromecast. I did download on desktop. to connect TV. Do I have to download laptop and Iphone at same time with others?
Have you tried to use Control Center? That shows what media is currently or last used. Just wondering.
Looks nifty for the more technically inclined, but I can't ever imagine my mother working this out, something she's managed to do with the Apple TV.
Wow, you do good commercials...google should pay you. Do this device work with the Kindle Fire :)
the new nexus is one of the best tablets on the market right now.
We can have various smart stick..Does it value for money or just another boo boo shot to electronic market ?
Looks all great but I do have some questions:
1) can i stream the desktop from my pc to my tv (Spotify/VLC for example) or just my Chrome browser?
2) can i also install netflix on this stick or streams it only from my Netflixaccount on my phone?
the box said netflix is supported, but ive heard apps for chromecast are being developed.
Excellent video! Thx for posting this.
Good info. Looks like a useful device without a lot of clutter except for having to plug it in also comments on You Tube videos still works on Mac Book but not on my PC, Google + still has me confused which is the main reason I put a comment here after wasting a whole day trying to get you tube to work right on my PC.
Do I have to name mine Mike's Chromecast too?
;)
You could name it Mr. Chromecast's Chromecast. Or Living Room.
Yes, you do!
How well do you think would work on a slower internet connection?
I have a dumb question... I just got this for a Christmas gift. When we are not able to attend church our church streams it LIVE on line...so my question is with the Google Chromecast can I view the live service on our TV once it is all hooked up.. or wont this work?
Yep. Using the google chrome web browser, open up web page the service is being streamed on, and cast it to the television with the google cast extension :)
Thanks a lot man for responding... I have not hooked it up yet. I have a Apple TV but not happy with it at this point. Take care Merry Christmas
lol I'm not happy with many apple products but thats a different conversation. Merry Christmas.
Malachi Adams Does google chrome cast support apple airplay?
Nope, no cross platform compatibility I know of. zi
