Hi, this is the first time I've ever seen someone who is doing astrobiology at NASA. I cannot express how that's exactly my goal. I really, really want to be an astrobiologist and I'm limited in resources where I am. Do you have any tips? And if you don't mind, where did you go to university and what did you study? Thank you x
@@lindam8791 Hi! I'm just finishing up an MS thesis in geosciences right now. For my undergrad I started out in biology classes and then switched to Biogeoscience which is a study of where biology and geology interact. I'm currently at the University of Tulsa and we don't have any kind of space themed program or much of a connection to NASA so where you go to college isn't a huge factor. The thing that helps is networking. My advisor is friends with a prominent astrobiologist at JPL. So I sent her an email expressing interest in an internship. When she got funding she sent me an invite. If you haven't started college, I do recommend looking for schools with space and astrobiology programs. But again it is not essential. You're just more likely to find the connections there. Much of it involves geochemistry because so much research shows that interactions between rock and water do lots of chemistry that can create organic molecules. So I recommend some sort of biology and geology background. Microbiology is really good because it's thought if we find anything it will be similar to that. Look up scientists in the field that are doing stuff that interests you and reach out to them. Do some preliminary research on what they do so you're not just saying HI I WANNA WORK AT NASA. You don't have to be an expert, It just helps to know what it is they do. I worked in a lab that ranged from freshmen that hardly knew anything. Ans that's fine. We're all there to learn. These folks are much more likely to extend an internship offer to someone who reaches out to them than going through the main system blind. That said, you should still apply for internships in the system. JPL and all of the NASA centers should have a website to apply. Wherever you go to college, let your professors know you are interested in research and that you are interested in astrobiology. They may be doing that kind of research or something that you can spin to be astrobiology related. Try to keep term projects and papers focused on that field if you have the option. That's all stuff you can put on a resume as experience. Look at what talks are happening on campus (I guess virtually, now). Scientists that do all kinds of things get invited to speak at colleges and you might get to see an astrobiologist speak. I have been trying to figure out how to make separate error bars for each bar on my graphs for my entire freshman year of college. Did not realize all you had to do was select the values already in excel! Thank you so much.
You saved my life I was failed in my PhD defence just because some graph were mixed with some stats error you are savage God bless you . I would love to take you on a dinner if you live in Sydney

I struggled a bit in the video... but later realized you can also just click the horizontal bars and hit 'delete' on your keyboard.
