Really good choice for a first car, well built, safe and reliable
If anyone is considering a DSG Polo, they can be slow when pulling off (if you’re a new driver that has a black box, you will get marked down for “harsh acceleration”). They do roll back on hills too; you’d be treating it like a manual in the sense that you’d have to hill start just without a clutch. It’s easier than the 3 second hill hold function. Overall, it’s a nice looking car, great on petrol and reliable.

Barrie what’s your opinion on these lower powered petrol cars with an auto box? Do they suit well or would a manual be better?
Grant M auto gearboxes are so good these days i wouldnt hesitate to get one, little cars are mostly used around town, usually stuck creeping forward in traffic jams, manual car, 1st gear, brake, clutch in, neutral, hand brake, clutch out, where as automatic , brake off, creep forward, brake on Sorted! Auto every time for me 👍

i think a Polo is a cheaper car to insure
Polo is cheap but drove a dsg for the first time. Dunno if it’s the car but u can’t mash the throttle like I can in a Manila
Would you say a polo is okay to drive on a the motorway? Considering a DSG does lag a lot is it okay for long journeys?

What’s your opinion on autos? I’m doing my test in a geared so then if I ever want to change to geared I can buy I prefer autos they are way more fun to drive
Autos are fantastic now (proper autos not clutchless manual cars) i prefer autos unless its a sports car

which car do you think would be best for a 17 year old male driver for their first car? Mini one 1.4/ vw polo 1.2 match or vw golf 1.4, all around the age of 2008/9. Thanks.
personally I think the best 1st car from a financial point of view would be the Polo, however from a street cred point of view I think the Golf or the Mini would be preferable, the Golf is a little understated (boring) but the Mini has all sorts of stuff that you can use to customise and personalise it, but seen as Women have a say in at least 80% of car buying decisions these days, and thats not taking into account that 20% of men lie, you may be better to ask your girlfriend instead of me, as you get older you will realise that you will not buy whats best for you, or the car that you yourself want, the decision always comes down to whats best for a quiet life, good luck for the future Barrie :-)
ps if you happen to be single at the moment then congratulations as this is probably the first and last car that you will ever get to 100% chose yourself!!!!

@@BarrieCrampton Wouldn't insurance be high for 1.4 vehicles. I know the golf costs a lot.
Yes, best getting a 1.0 until you build up your insurance no claims bonus

Both great cars, I have to say that Skoda have really upped their game and you probably get a better car for the same amount of money as their residuals still arent as good as VW, but make sure you drive them both and make sure they have proper service histories, then flip a coin, whatever you do dont rely on me :-)
Very late but was wondering what you think would be the best choice for a first car? Polo (this one), Fiesta(2010-2013) or a Corsa (2011-2013)
bearing in mind I will be driving tallish people around too
All 3 good cars,Polo best made but old mannish, choice between Fiesta and Corsa for me would be whichever i could get with the youngest, lowest miles, best service history, in best condition i could get for my budget

Barrie Crampton Depends what you are after, if it’s a fun to drive, drivers car then get a fiesta or corsa. If it’s build quality I would get buy the polo
Well I bought a 2015 skoda fabia which is almost the same as the polo, but cheaper and better spec and more modern interior. The fiesta is probably the most fun to drive. Best thing to do is go and test drive them. My mind was made up when I drove the fabia.

Lady owner usually means that they have been looked after better, cars are cleaner inside and not usually hammered
