Ghost in the Shell is the best Anime franchise. Full stop! Infact the writer is particularly good at cyberpunk. Check out appleseed (especially appleseed alpha) if you like cyber punk it's a more apocalyptic world but still excellent.
This anime ruined my love for this song, I can't hear or think about this song without feeling sad there wont be anything else like GITS. AT least considering the time line of things in GITS and real life, perhaps I dont need more of GITS, it just might all happen before 2092 comes.
Hard to believe this came out way back in 2003. In the anime takes place in 2030,which isn't far off now being 2019. But back in 2003 when this was made it seemed so far off and distant future. I love this anime,The Major,the most bad ass woman ever!
Well, she certainly is one of the most badass women ever on the scree. But i do not think she is more badass than Sgt. Ellen Ripley. Motoko is inhumanly strong, fast and agile. And she is the best at what she does. But really toughness is when you are scared out of your witts and still keep on fighting. Ellen had that in spades.
Who is fucking pissed that this anime set the bar so high and made us think that this was what anime was going to be like? GITS: SAC from the first season to SSS is still untopped. Thankfully I could scratch that itch going back to classics such as Cowboy Bebop, Escaflowne and other great contemporaries with artistic integrity such as Planetes or Mushi-shi, or with the first season of Psycho-Pass, that, while a bit try-hard edgy, was a bit of a callback to this early 2000s golden age of adult, artistic anime... but it's a damn shame that this hasn't become the goal of anime production or even adult animation worldwide.

I am not that much into fiction, but I have to say that I'm so glad I've watched GITS. I just cannot imagine anyone cooler than the major. I actually had to expand my scale of coolness/badassness to accommodate her, and I love that.
Most movies (from hollywood that is, as opposite to the Japanese live actions) do injustice to the anime versions. That's because they adapt or locolized too much or the wrong way and there are most probably other reasons too why they fail to do justice to the original.
I’m not sure why did they blend the movie and the TV show together. Even worse, the major is portrayed as some kind of vulnerable little girl with a tragic past rather than being a cold but curious figure who mature not through puberty but through the accumulation of knowledge alone. In both the movie and the show, she’s not some kind of tragic character, but a unique figure in the world of cybernetics. We see through her eyes, not as a human, but something already beyond that: gender, allegiance and group thinking. Her role is different in the two as well. In the movie, she’s the centre of conflicts. Everything revolves around her quest to understand what and who she is. The TV show is more about the politics of the cybernetics future and the cast rather than the Major. The movie remake is just a confusing mess that attempted to merge the two for no apparent reason. Just the fact that the Major is portrayed so differently between the two would have made the adaption challenging, badly written and forgotten elements made it disappointing. I was most disappointed by the Major’s portrayal of course. The animated movie Major was cold, inhuman but also extremely curious and melancholic. The TV show Major is more humane but she’s always very calculative and distant. The portrayals are interpretation of the character who did not go through puberty and mature in a twisted way. The TV show Major appreciate camaraderie and philosophy through her experience in the army. Both of them made the movie adaption Major seems like someone else. It’s hard for the writer to appreciate an inhumane Major who’s someone from a different world, with no concept of death and always focus on the objective. She had to be “human” in the most blatant way.
Except for cyber brains (some brain interface components exist) the cybernetic technologies are not that far off when it comes to eyes, and arms. The rest is in 3rd generation testing phase. Eyes and arms are like 4th to 5th generation. I think around 6th generation we will start to see similar stuff. Total body or brain will probably take 50 years because we just don't understand the brain and modern PC culture really doesn't want us to because it doesn't fit their agenda. I have a minor in robotics & mathematics, and specialized my mechanical engineering degree in kinematics, which how we use math to figure out the stresses of these movements. AI is quite a bit off in my mind, also due to understanding of the human mind because all AIs can be influenced easily
