  • This was taken at the Rhosneigr end of RAF Valley, by Runway 31. As far as I can tell, it's a Great Golden Digger Wasp, which is a particularly large, but delicate looking burrowing wasp. It is a part of the 'Thread Waisted' family of wasps.
We watched her digging her nest, and then covering it up immediately afterwards. We're not sure if she dug it and then just hid it, or if she put some prey in there and laid an egg. ~shrugs~
This little thing was very quick, and was able to move objects much larger than itself with ease.
If I have the identification wrong, I'd love to know. Tell me in the comments. Likewise if you love, or loathe these wasps, I'd also like to know!
This was our first time seeing one in the UK.
This video was put through some stabilisation processes to keep up with the wasp, which will explain some of the small shakes and wiggles on screen.

Quite mesmerising to watch this! 😁 Amazing to see the size of the stones it could move. It almost built a miniature cairn! Lovely video👍 ATB!

Thanks so much. Yeah we were similarly fascinated by the size of the rocks it was able to shift, as well as the speed it was able to dig. We'd never seen one before.

Thanks very much - it's just a Canon Powershot on a monopod. I'm not very steady in my chair when I'm filming, so I have to stabilise the footage sometimes, but we enjoyed watching this little critter going about its business. It was fascinating. Thanks, and you! :)
