I tried natto for the first time on my Tokyo trip last year and I actually quite liked it. It's very similar in flavour to vegemite in Australia. My japanese friend was surprised I ate a whole bowl of it 😂
When I first went to Japan and saw the oden near the counter of the conbini I had no idea what it was. It looked intimidating, next time at a market in Kyoto we tried it and it was delicious!!! Now I seek it out year round when in Japan . It is a fantastic breakfast meal. Try it if you get the opportunity!!!
This list has a lot of my favourites haha , so i think this doesn't really apply to me much except for natto which i can eat but can't say i love it! Oden, katsuboshi, umeiboshi, doriyaki, mugicha all are my favourite! The one that i think quite a lot of people are not used to is eating raw egg, or tofu!
I'm definitely going to try some of these! I keep meaning to try natto with eggs to make it more palatable. Thanks for sharing! I love your food videos.
We love 7-11 oden. Actually we are going to have it for dinner tomorrow. Very low calorie and healthy! The Lawson here in Okinawa has pig feet, which my sister in law loves! For the folks from the USA that have been to a Japanese restaurant, they were most likely served miso soup with their dinner. The exception if the ordered ramen. Thanks for the interesting video!
What a great video! Thank you, Kenchan! I think I would try all of these except maybe the umeboshi 😅. I know I will definitely like the bean-based items and the oden. I have to investigate the Japanese supermarkets near me to see what they have in terms of the fermented items (natto, squid, etc).
Natto is one of my favorite foods! I loved having a natto maki roll for breakfast every morning during my time in Tokyo. Because of the wide availability of Japanese foods in Guam and Hawaii, I've been able to try most of these foods and I enjoy most of them! The only ones I haven't tried are the tongue and shiokara, but I'll put them on my list for next time 😊
Mix natto with rice a little bit at a time to ease the strong natto flavor. Natto is extremely healthy… full of vitamins and minerals so that may help you to ‘like it’.
Yes, natto is an acquired taste especially for non-Japanese like us 😅 It has that weird taste and texture, but I already got used to that after my frequent travels in JP
What a fun video, thank you very much Kengo ! I think, I am a little bit japanese ;-), because I like most of those foods. I especially like oden, seaweed and miso (especially the one with the small clams inside it). The only 2 things I dont like, is natto (I cannot eat it), tongue (I can eat it, but I dont enjoy it). The squid innards I have never tasted, so I cant comment on it yet. Maybe in March I will try it.
I'm happy to see tongue is enioyed quite a lot in Japan! I love it. It's not popular in the UK now, but it used to be popular before, when the economy was worse.
The subtitles are hilarious. Some of these foods are garnishes and not eaten on their own: katsuobushi and umeboshi. Ume is frequently called a plum but it’s actually a type of apricot with a unique taste. It’s used for both sweet and savoury.
Ahhh yes...the first day we were in Japan last year, Natto was the 1st food we really did not like haha....what did like is the onigiri, uden, miso soup with clams at (KURA SUSHI) and tongue too!! Kampai from Toronto
Hi! I have enjoyed several of the items you mentioned, just not from the 7-11 conbini. Because of the texture, I am definitely a texture person, I don't know if I would enjoy natto. I like umeboshi. I love miso shiru, mentaiko, kombu, and katsuouboshi. The squid sounds interesting, but I am a bit concerned about the texture. The tongue sounded interesting, too. I would try them both. The alcohol I probably wouldn't try. I am not a sake fan, so I would probably skip this. The mugicha, I like. It's refreshing. Thanks for the food challenge. ☺
Your pug dog looks like he would eat all of your food from 7-11! He's so cute. I live in Chicago and the food from 7-11 is not very good here. Mostly it is junk food that is unhealthy and seems to be made with cheap, unhealthy ingredients. Plus, the stores in my neighborhood are not very clean and are messy. Overall, 7-11 here is where you go to buy junk food, snacks, cigarettes and lottery tickets. 🐢
i tried natto for the first time last year in Japan with rice and it was suprisingly good! btw your dog is sooo adorable~
Omg! Look at little Kenny Chan 🥰 He is a hungry little boy
When he wasn’t in the camera, he was trying to get up on my lap. :)
Great video. I believe I could try anything once, as long as I didn't know what it was. 😆 Kenny certainly looked interested.

Kengo-San! I love natto! We had with breakfast almost everyday when we were in Japan!😊
Thank you Kenchan really nice video.......I love the onigiri, daifuku with red bean paste, pancake and miso soup these we bought when in Japan
Thank you Effie san. I'm glad you to hear you liked some of them. I hope you can try some more next time. :)

This is the type of video I love thank you
Glad you liked this! Thank you. :)

I love your videos, they’re incredibly helpful for Japan travel!
Please make a video of foods that you think we must try at Konbinis!
I'm definitely going to try some of these! I keep meaning to try natto with eggs to make it more palatable. Thanks for sharing! I love your food videos.
I’m glad you liked this video and you’re trying new foods! Thank you. :)

Somtimes it sounds really real and different if I translate it to English. ^^ Kenny was like a hunter for entire 1 hour when I was filming this. :)

I’m glad you enjoyed the video, and it's interesting to hear you like a lot of the foods here. I think squid is definitely something worth trying. :)
7-11 should sponsor Ken-san, so you can make a video of “12 things visitors would like from 7-11”! 😅😊
I've had Seaweed, kasuobushi, miso, doriyaki (with anko) and cod roe. I like all of them a lot. Interested to try Oden one day!
That's great you liked the cod roe! I hope you can try the squid too. :)
Ironically, I am more or less ok with Umeboshi, but natto I just can't deal with 🤣
I love Natto.
Super fun and interesting. Thanks for sharing!
Convenience stores in Japan are really something else that makes it unique from the rest of the world.
Thank you, Would love to try them all.🥰
I love the "it looks ewww for some people" hahahaha
hahaha. 😊
This was a neat video. I want to try lots of 7/11 food while I'm in Japan just because 7/11 is so different in Japan vs. the US. Thanks for sharing!
I had natto in a rice ball and it was so delicious. I like to try the food in cobini and Japanese grocery stores.

Kampai from Tokyo! Toyama is famous for firefly squid so I hope you can try. :)
Japanese are so into raw egg.... I will die, if I have to eat things with raw egg.... But, I saw Japanese eating raw eggs, and they really enjoy it.
Mentaiko is my favorite onigori, oh I miss this so much, we cant come back to japan until 2027😢

Don't know if it's available in 7-Eleven, but I don't like uni (sea urchin).
