Honestly never thought I'd find myself listening to Aussie drill. Thanks for putting me on!
On your point about the lack of representation for the rougher areas of Sydney, it is something that a lot of people from the area feel alienated by. I personally am also from Western Sydney like ONEFOUR are but I'm further south but the same issue of gangs, poverty, the lack of oppurtunity, and the lack of a voice is something that I can definately relate to.
It is quite difficult to make it out of western Sydney in general, to do so through an artistic outlet is near impossible. The supportive infrastructure for artistic talent in these areas is quite underfunded as a large majority of people in Western Sydney attend publically funded schools which simply do not have the finances to support them. In comparison, their privately funded counterparts which are more prevalent further east, receive signficiant amounts of funding from politicians whom are often alumni and have vested interests like donations from these schools. This divide is also further driven by the demographic differences between the areas, with a significantly larger refugee, working class, and diverse ethnic background. As such a stigma about Western Sydney exists and often telling people that you are from the area negatively affects a number of life prospects (I personally experienced this multiple times when I was studying in University).
Sorry to go on a rant but this topic is something that I'm talked about a lot, and something I didn't realise how bad it was until I started leaving the area more.

@@JonDenton No worries, I've heard there are a lot of parallels between South London and Western Sydney which definately makes sense why ONEFOUR take so much insparation from them.

Coming from Parramatta which is nearby Mount Druitt where these boys are from.. Most of the western suburbs of Sydney is like this. Gangs and a lot of race based violence.
Some of the slang used in their songs have come from England and have only been said in songs like "ops, dipped, bally, cheffed, kweff, pumpy, ching, ect." But words like "Cuz, lad, mothers (or mums), bruv" are used on a day to day basis here in Syd, typically in Western Sydney.

To start off I would recommend Capital STEEZ - Free The Robots. You really enjoyed his verse on Survival Tactics with Joey Badass. The two have some more tracks you would definitely enjoy. The slang is a bit of both... Obviously England and Australia share a lot of their vernacular but there is a definite influence from UK Drill which has come through with the genres rise here in Australia. And yes, there is plenty to explore in the future as Australia has a healthy Hip Hop scene and has had for a long time. The rise of Drill and Grime here just adds to list.

They borrow alot of slang from us because they were inspired by our drill scene in the first place and listened to it alot.

Lot of the slang is similar, things like “eetswa” “eshay” “dogs” all Aussie slang but lot of other slang is influenced or borrowed
All the slang here is stuff we use in the street, just coincidence that UK drill also uses it.
A lot in here is also just Aussie slang. "Bally's on like Ned Kelly" is probably the most Australian thing I've ever heard haha.

For your question about the slang, Australia uses some of uk’s slang but everyone tries to say we copy uk but really it’s just the most relatable country to us and although it’s used in the music a little it’s not used as much in day to day life. Australian hip hop and drill artist are trying to make there own sound but is hard because we only just getting recognition and it’s seems like some uk dudes hate that Australia is climbing the charts. Give us Aussies a listen, ya won’t regret it!🤙🇦🇺
