Excellent video and very nice CMP Rack Grade! I just ordered a NOS WWII era replacement mainspring from Sarco for my CMP Colt. I noticed my original mainspring seemed a little weak. Will definitely pick up the Wolf springs for recoil and firing pin springs as well. They seem to have a very good reputation. Another good alternative I hear is Wilson Combat springs. I read the other day that original 1911s had 22 lb recoil springs, but 17 lb springs became the standard later to make it easier to retract/charge the slide.
22lb was probably changed because the slides weren’t fully heat treated and could cause unnecessary wear and tear on the frame. I know the current 10mm 1911s come with 20+ pound springs to help tame the recoil of it.
Thank you for posting this. Hopefully my number is called soon for round three. CMP didn’t send me an email that it was open until the extension period was called so I had my paperwork in on 10/31/23. I’ll certainly be replacing my springs on it.
being a 1911 fan i would suggest cleaning all the firing pin and extractor channels and the main spring channel. I used a drill press to hold the mainspring to remove and replace that tiny retaining pin. Good video excellent example pf disassembly and reassembly so thank yu for your well presented work
Good idea ,I do that and I used the Wolfe extra power firing pin return spring. Its supposed to help prevent an accidental discharge if you drop the loaded gun. Not 100 percent guaranteed. Real nice program.
I think you might have installed the firing pin spring backwards. The other end will capture the firing pin tightly which will prevent the spring from going over the groove and will also prevent the spring from flying out when you disassemble the firing pin assembly.
I really appreciate that info! I just went to the garage and double checked and sure enough you were right! I flipped the spring and it was a little smaller allowing it to “grab” onto the firing pin.
I remember back in 1960 there was a surplus of refurbish ex military service of M-1911 in various manufactured sold to public by NRA for $56.00. I brought one of these M-1911-A1 from the private collector in nice shape in 1992 for $450.00 using my FFL collector license. When I took it to the range, I was questioned by the club member as "is it legal to owned?"
It’s definitely legal to own but I’m sure the “US Giverment Property” stamp makes it look questionable. Prior to the NRA sales in the 60s. I would think it would be fair to say any US property marked 1911 would have been stolen property.
I was told long time ago when Secreaty of Defense named Robert Mc.Namara can authorized the refurbished Colt M-1911 that send to aids South Vietmanese government to be returned to the US with some service man to be legally owned.
You’re going to keep the originals no? Sorry if you mentioned that later in the video I haven’t watched the whole thing yet. Or did you buy yours for a plinker?
I did keep all the originals. I replaced all the springs so when I do shoot it, it will not beat itself to death. I have shot it twice now and it functions great!

@@gunsforevery1 Yes, absolutely, that makes sense.
A 10mm 1911 is also on my list... good stuff.

I sent my paperwork in mid October, so you should be getting a call soon! I’ve only had mine maybe 3 weeks or so.

It was done off camera haha. Through the magic of UA-cam, this wasn’t the first time the springs were replaced lol.

That’s a great idea, I will definitely do the same whenever I pick mine, thanks for the video.
When you're changing the hammer spring try putting the punch in the vise instead of your MSH
