  • A wonderful snapshot of Britain in the late seveties. It was strikes like this that led people voting overwhelmingly for Margaret Thatcher and which took this nation along a path of monetarism and privitisation. The debates still rage as to whether this was a good thing or not.
The strike itself concerned those workers that were generally considered to be on low pay and who despite the government recently having imposed a restraint on pay. This action along with many others (I hope to be uploading clips in the near future) occurred in a time now often referred to as The Winter Of Discontent. At its height the strikes that occurred during this time affected almost a fifth of Britains work force.

This was a terrible time for Britain with hospitals on strike, the railways closed by strikes, water workers disputes in the North West, fuel and food shortages caused by lorry drivers strikes and other disputes involving BBC staff, car workers, civil servants and teachers.

This is what voting for Corbyn would bring back.

Looks like Birmingham under the Tories in 2017. The local bin men have been in dispute with the Labour Council all summer and have today, 18th Sept, voted to stay out till after Christmas. Seems the Tory austerity policy is keeping the council cash-strapped, so the council were trying to make cuts by downgrading the bin men's pay and conditions.

Could you imagine how people would cope now, 2020? I remember still going to work and just getting on with it.

@Szederp That film is called 'Ratcatcher' (1999) but it's set in Scotland (Glasgow), not England.

Thank you for the upload. There was - I think - an English tragedy movie, set in the era of the dustmen's strike, but I cannot recall its name...

Would love to use some clips from this video - any idea where I can license some of this for use in a film?

When you say the people voted "overwhelmingly for Margaret Thatcher" what you actually mean is that the Conservatives got 43.9% of the national vote, compared to 36.9% for Labour.
