I never thought about how the blind would "see" optical illusions. That's kind of freakin awesome. Oh, and I had to watch this twice because the first time through I was just trying to read your shirt.
Knowing that these were illusions, I adopted the same strategy, but it fooled me on the red/blue line one. My first instinct was red, until I convinced myself that it must be the other one. It turns out my first instinct was right on that one.
I love the slightly shy and almost awkwardly unscripted feel of the ending monologue. It made the video feel so much more personal, like you were really talking to me as an individual, no just a student in one of your classes. Hope you don't take any of that the wrong way. Keep up the great work, love your videos.
I definitely don't think the video was too long. Out of all pbs digital studios channels I frequent, I enjoy psb spacetime best and those videos range from 8 minutes all the way to 20. Another channel I thoroughly enjoy is pbs eons with videos ranging from 5 to 13 minutes. I personally prefer to be entirely engrossed in a topic and learn all the little intricacies of that topic, like the fact you added at the end of this video. For channels like physics girl, it's okay to be smart and even braincraft, it sometimes feels like the video is over before it really begun.
A superb video Vanessa! What this illustrates is how easily our senses can be fooled. The police always make the point that an eye witness account is the most unreliable form of evidence with forensic evidence being the best. As a Physicist, I learned to always "rely on the math" and not on my innate instincts. Also, how many times has a hiker in the woods become confused, or even lost, when going with his/her instincts rather than just following their compass? Thanks again!
Since I first heard it, my understanding of the world has been affected by the statement, "Our senses did not evolve to show us the world as it is, but rather as it was useful to see it in the past."
Now that your venturing into the perception arena, I have from birth strabismus and have always been interested in how I have managed to identify perception of depth. I cannot see 3D movies but I seem (well think I do) have 3D perception. Hope this could be one of your topics. Keep up the awesome work :)
Whitey Senior That's very interesting. Perception of 3D and depth also isn't just about having two eyes, though, as you can focus on far and close objects with just one eye and the world is made up of shadows and light. So I imagine that also has something to do with it.
Correct, I can only see out of one eye at a time, hence why I can see 3D. They tell me the brain has been educated to identify depth and dimension. I also wondered if my perception of depth etc. is different to two eye focal. There is nothing I can find to be able to test that theory. Remembering my site perception was trained or learned from birth, so just covering one eye is not a valid test. Anyway I like your thought pattern.
if you show someone with synethesia an illusion oriented around their combined sense does it work with the combined sense like color smell on the dress with two colors? I really hope Vanessa sees and understands my question
I am wondering if we are tricked by the perspective illusion (Ponzo's) just because we are used to see pictures in perspective, or if it is natural. What I mean is even if we see the "real world" in a sort of perspective (farer things look smaller), perspective is a mathematical abstraction which was first theorized in Renaissance (you can find it sometimes before that period, but it's not mathematical, it's "intuitive perspective"). In the medieval age, for example, perspective wasn't used in paintings. They had a different "code", like things behind were pictured above, while small people weren't farer then the big ones, but just less important (like small angels, big virgin Mary). Do you think that a medieval person, used to this kind of rapresentation of the world, would be tricked by the Ponzo's illusion? Or not? Has the illusion had ever been tested to some people belonging to some remote culture in which perspective isn't used?
I like how you keep bringing in blind people as part of experiments or their experiences. Could you do a video about deaf people, particularly whether they have the bilingual effect as they read and write one language (eg. English) but speak and listen to another (eg. Auslan)? I've heard differing accounts, and I'm not even sure if the studies are there, but they are separate languages so maybe they'd have the bilingual effect?
While it's easy to be tricked by illusions like that, by looking only at those important objects it's quite easy to see solution i.e. look at illusion with both yellow lines and focus only and only on them ignoring completely rest of it, for me, it looks the same length that way. Cheers!
Ilikeclapping Blah If you really want to support Vanessa, you could donate to her. It supports the creators you like more efficiently, and it doesn't waste your time. Unless you like spending your time watching ads... whatever floats your boat...
Everytime someone tells me it is an illusion. I don`t choose the answer that I think it is correct, because I know they are trying to trick me. And that hand thing in the very seems pretty weird.
The problem is that you, as myself, have seen all possible illusions already, so you know what to expect. However the Poggendorff illusion was new to me and for a moment I thought the line was between the red and blue lines, but after a second or so I came to the conclusion that is is the red line. Nice to see that I was right, even though my first feeling was wrong.
I wouldn't consider an under 5 minute video long. On that note I think it would awesome to do a video on attention spans. My 12 year old son just bought himself a fidget spinner to my dismay. He is completely healthy and I worry that his use of the device developed for those that do have attention problems, may actually do him harm by reducing his attention span in times that he doesn't have it. What are your thoughts on these things?
seth davis I heard somewhere that it doesn't hurt a lot. In the way that it normal for people to do background tasks while focussing on the main problems. What I would worry about is if the spinner isn't distracting him. as someone with adhd myself I think toese spinner would distract me (and the cubes even more). I'll just find a coping strategy on my own :D
In the future, Neurointerfaces will improve so much, so blind people (from the birth) could see. Just imagine how wierd and miracle at the same time it would be.. Can't wait.. P.s. You are so cute :)
Geometry Dash Kay Joe there are ways for blind people to read what's on a screen. I am curious what the experience of this video would be without the sense of sight...
You assume blind people process touch stimulation with the same cerebral regions as non blind people but it's not the case. Visual cortex si rewired and is used for sensory perception
The first third and fourth didn't fool me for one second. And technically neither did the second cause I knew I should answer the opposite of what I was thinking lol.
Nothing new here... as aways you are amazing and full of incredible knoledge... I wonder if you can do a boring, not interesting and empty video... And, I love the monologing... and the Tshirt...
You know, you're talking a lot about blindness in this video, but it isn't actually accessible to the blind without image description. Close your eyes and try to watch to see what I mean. Image description doesn't have to be awkward either, you can just casually mention anything important that pops up on the screen and that'll be enough.
Why can't we imagine new colors when we can imagine new people, animals, aliens, and inventions? Can people who have been blind since birth imagine new colors??? Please make a video about this. Also, I copypasted this on several other videos to make sure you see.
MALAVIKA NAIR There's a channel called "The Tommy Edison Experience", where he talks about his life as a blind person. He has a video about how strange color seems to him. It's a great channel and can can definitely answer these questions.
Thanks be to heaven you don't monologue in monotone, :) . I think it's entertaining to try speaking in monotone but never so much as fun as trying to speak without the letter I in English. I made it for a rule much less entertaining than some which with alcohol combined becomes a very silly event, virtual cave dwellers.
Optical illusions are dumb anyway. They force you to witness a design in 2 dimensions. It doesn't matter if it extends into a "background" or if there's a cube or something present, it's still on a flat piece of paper or screen. Go on, just try and be tricked when you have 3 dimensions to work with. Your eyes are so good at detecting small increments in angles that if you saw these as sculptures and not pictures, you wouldn't be fooled. If we were cyclopses, or the illusions were 3 dimensional, then there'd be a reason for them existing. You know, maybe as a way to play with your natural abilities, but are you ever going to come across a scenario in your survival where you have to deal with a 2D image? Optical Illusions are exercises for just standard brain activity, but what purpose does recognising a 2 dimensional trick have?
I doubt that you'll read this but I thought I should clarify a few things and properly apologize. The thing is, I didn't mean to offend anyone, this comment was meant to be a harmless joke. I know, I think it's really awesome too. Oh, and may the force be with you.
I always take the opposite answer to what my brain says about the illusions. And it always works..
Same here! It isn't 100% but it is usually the best way to deal with these. :)
I mean, that's only because you know it's meant to be an illusion! If you encounter them "in the wild", you'll be fooled like the rest of us :P
Knowing that these were illusions, I adopted the same strategy, but it fooled me on the red/blue line one. My first instinct was red, until I convinced myself that it must be the other one. It turns out my first instinct was right on that one.
But how do you know if it's an illusion, unless someone says "look at this illusion"?
I love your monologuing ;-D
Ha, thank you!
I love the slightly shy and almost awkwardly unscripted feel of the ending monologue. do you realise how awesome you are? :D

Fantastic,Vanessa-keep up the good work!
Very interesting! I never would have guessed that blind and sighted people could experience the same illusion. Thanks for the video!
lovin' that vintage well worn star wars baseball t ;-)
Same.
Glad you included the extra bits in the monologging! Learning can never take too long!
I love your science-y content, it helps me unwind. Thank you for working hard to make the content that you do.
Cool! Love these, my favorite has always been the "fork" (2 "connections" at the base, but 3 tines) :)
The information given after curiosity stream was really interesting and reminded me the episode from the Dead Pool.
Thanks for great video)
Great! I've been adding some bloopers and extras for everyone at the end :) Thanks for watching!
BrainCraft
Yeah, I saw some of them and I think the most of your viewers too.
That's very nice that you respond and like the comments so often)
Your shirt is awesome! Great video content as well! Thank you for sharing!
Super informative! Thank you!
that bit at the end had me 😂😂😂
Great explanation, so indeed there are not just OPTICAL illusions :)

And then there are people making art out of illusions -> M.C. Escher
That artist drew my favorite piece of art of all time: "Relativity"
I think it's interesting that I saw the illusion in your thumbnail and they looked pretty clearly parallel, but in the video it tricked my brain
Optical illusions are so weird. Great video
That ending is equivalent to the concluding paragraphs on most of my standardized testing essays.
Thank you for the great channel :) Very informative ...
your videos are so good, so informative, so
Thank you for watching!

when you explain things it doesn't feel the time passing, so dont be afraid of making long videos, and as always i love your awesome content!!!
"It's really long"
Shorter than 5 minutes... Are you single? Asking for a friend.
if you show someone with synethesia an illusion oriented around their combined sense does it work with the combined sense like color smell on the dress with two colors? I really hope Vanessa sees and understands my question
That's pretty mind bending right there! I would think yes.
Chris Baugher don't know if it ever existed but imagine a tetrachromat *can see 100m more colors* and color based synethesia
Your videos are really cool!

Great video, and great sneaky Star Wars shirt
I thought those yellow lines were different by a few pixels, and they were! Woo!
really loved the video
I accidentally skipped the ad and UA-cam won't let me rewatch it . I'm so sorry Vanessa.

The Poggendorff Illusion gets me EVERY time. While I was editing this I kept holding a pencil up to the red line on my computer screen to make sure 🙈
***** bragging rights
STAR WARS :D okay, that said .. love listening to you explain things.
I for one will watch your vids no matter how long they are ^_^
4:50!!! THAT'S TOO LONG!!
..J/k, I watch 20+ minute science videos all the time.
Feel free to go longer if you got interesting data to add.

Wonderful.
The Muller-Lyer illusion didn't affect me a all to the point when I first looked at it I was wondering what the illusion was supposed to be XD.
Lovely pajama! Btw, Poggendorff illusion didn't work on me.
Great video :3 you are super cute a the end, thinking we mind longer videos haha.
yeah! back to brain stuff!

that blue and red line illusion to me it looks like the black line is an extension of the red line, and it is. How is this an illusion?
Too long, at 4:50?! Bloviate away..
Monologue my brains out. Only with the Aussie accent though.
Was her Star Wars shirt an illusion too?
+TheVictini44 ...as the great Obi-Wan Kenobi once said "Your eyes can deceive you. Don't trust them." 👀

It makes me kinda sad that you aren't more "popular"....
Also, if you could do something about space? Like "tabbys star" (if you could)
Thanks :))
i wish tommy edison would know about this.
but are they still called "optical" illusion? taltical illusion maybe
mulier-lyer illusion didn't work on me

Monologue science to me!

Damn.... she is so..so...so...so hot (intelligence, charm & looks). And that's no optical illusion.
So puny
