- History of the Bay Podcast Ep. 60: Sunspot Jonz fka BFAP is one half of Mystik Journeymen and a founding member of Living Legends. Growing up in East Oakland, he fell in love with music early but didn't identify with gangsta rap trends. This led Sunspot to find like-minded artists in the underground hip-hop scene, like his partner Luckyiam fka PSC, who joined Mystik Journeymen. Frustrated with the mainstream music industry, they pressed their own tapes and CDs, created their own magazine, and threw their own shows, including the Broke Ass Summer Jam. After traveling the world independently, the Journeymen became founders of the Living Legends crew along with Grouch, Murs, Eligh, Arata, Scarub, Bicasso, and Aesop. Since then, the Legends have sold millions of units and continue independently touring around the world.

"I wanna be a writer. No one in my family understands till there's money in my hands" - Sunspot Jonz
"not once, did my family ever, ask to read, my shit"
'NOT ONCE DID MY FAMILY EVER ASK TO READ MY SHIT'
I recall that soulful instrumental in the background was on one of the UHB or Mystik Journeymen albums. Nas used the same sample on a song call Remember The Times. The sample is from Carol Douglas's "We Do It".
Peace to The Living Legends.
A true Living Legend!! I bought Mystic Journeymen's first tape directly from Sunspot at a World On Wheels concert in LA
Gratitude.
I bought a copy of The Return a few weeks ago from Amoeba.

First flyer I was on I opened for them. In Stockton 1997. Needless to say. It got shot up.
UNSIGNED AND HELLA BROKE
Great video, my favorite part of Bay Area rap music over the years has been the variety! Got Mobb shit like Cougnut, E-40, B-Legit, Earlier Mac Dre, RBL Posse, Jacka, etc.. but then you got Hieroglyphics/Living Legends/Locksmith style stuff that is more laid back and then you got the more party Hyphy stuff like Keak the Sneak, Later Mac Dre, etc... The Bay has had a wonderful diverse set of rapping over the years which is a big reason why i love rap music from the Bay over the years.
The amount of music the Living Legends made is insane ...so many albums, solo shit and underground tapes and cds....I still have alot of them...
Mac mall next!
WORLDWIDE UNDERGROUND
Next Stop Oakland...slappin
Absolute best album!!!!

Eek-a-mouse!
Saw Sunspot at chop suey, Seattle around 2003. A standout memory for me 💯
Man this interview was needed.
Salute @Dregs_One for reppin the Bay! Fellow #BayBred folks. I had commented a while back to have any of the Legends on, and you got the right one(no diss to any of my LL brothas) hopefully be the first of the Legendary super group. I knew Aesop years prior when he came up from Fresno to be in a group with my homies I grew up with. When we, HA crew(became Tha HA Mansion) moved to #The Compound in Oakland basically next door to the #Outhouse and other side of us Stat7(@buildestroy7 - Cory Shaw) was all underground Hip-Hop culture. All day erry day was beats, rhymes, graffiti, skateboarding and with Doze Green, B-Boyin.... Anyway, big up my true brother for life @SunpotJonz aka #Distructicon, preciate you for bringin me along on all our wild ass adventures in that time and still. Much respect and love ta all my LL brothers. #LL #4TrackIsKing #ControlYourDestiny #DontBeASheeple #HA42FamFoLife
I went and saw him with the Legends In SF he was dope, and he had his mom in the balcony which was cool.
Greetings from San Francisco Bay Area to all the world even Mt Fuji
Unsigned and Hella Broke publication put me up on Ras Kass and Xzibit well before they dropped any music.
There was a time when Mystic Journeymen opened up for top acts. I remember going to shows and leaving talking about them instead of the top bill.
I recall telling one of my homies that this wouldn't last and word was going to get out about them.
Sure enough, eventually they were headlining shows. To this day I say they are one of the best live performers I've ever seen.
It was over when they perform 'Never Forget'! Listening to the song now makes me appreciate how them and Lateef when he performed 'The Quickening', got everyone so hyped. Great songs but the stage presence was something else....
Been waitin on it!
Dope interview. I learned so much. Thank you.
