College Football commercial bought me here😁👍🏾 Damn, I miss live music like this. Dem horns bought it at 2:18. That whole groove through them playing was so smooth. Bet that sounded awesome live back in the day😌
i introduced my friend to this song when we were 16, a year later i carried his casket to the tune of this song. What an impact such a beautiful song leaves in such a short span of time. Love life while you can everyone
Yeah let's name a movie "Entertainment" this way it is near impossible to find in a search haha. Grabbed this gem on iTunes today, the soundtrack is great, it has excerpts from the film. "Whhhyyyyy....whhhhhyyyyyy........"
Search engines nowadays do support multiple words in the queries, though. ;) (E.g. "entertainment gregg" is a sure one for me, never even need to write "turkington".)
He really was his own and a unique talent. People look at me funny when I mention his name and how much I like him, either as a singer or composer, but he really had it. In his case, his father was an enormous obstacle. Much more than Judy for Liza for some reason.
i heard this song for the first time in high school like around 2007. i loved it but i didn't know who it was. The stream site said Frank Sinatra but i knew it wasn't him. it wasn't until a few years ago where i was pretty sure it was Sinatra Jr. i don't know why but i couldn't find this song on here or much of anywhere. and now today, i found out he had died and decided to look up this song and finally confirm this haunting melody that i loved was in fact Jr.. Rest in Peace bud
Fascinating. I know nothing about Frank Sinatra Jr and would have automatically dismissed him unless someone like Turkington stood behind it. Amazing song.
You can buy the whole soundtrack for Entertainment now (Neil Hamburger tweeted the link). It's well worth it, as the vast majority of it can't even be found elsewhere on the internet - no doubt a lot of stuff from the bowels of Gregg Turkington's collection. It's great. That being said, maybe hold off until you've seen the movie, as there are a couple of soundbites from the film which MIGHT be spoilerish. They're not really, but if you're a purist who's sensitive to that kind of thing - fair warning. Sorry for rambling.
Can I just say that I love that the character of Gregg Turkington has a vast collection of rare VHS films and the IRL Gregg Turkington has a collection of rare records.
Thanks for the post.I always put off seeing him but finally when he paid tribute to his Dad with the 100 Birthday celebration I went and was shocked at the show he presented.Seeing his Dad four times I knew the chances of hearing"The Town I Live In "were very slim but Franklin did it the night I saw him and I was ready to shed tears it was tremendous.Strange that I went online to look for tickets to see him again and he was in Lakeland Florida and then the tragic and early passing.
I'm 48 years old. Life long lover of all music, classical, metal, rap, jazz, world, I love it all. Always been a Sinatra fan as well. And somehow up until the other day watching an ESPN commercial, I had never heard this song. I instantly looked it up, and since then I have listened to this song at least 20 times. The brass section when it comes alive literally gives me chills. And since I just discovered a new song that I love, let me share another song that I love that also has an amazing brass performance. ua-cam.com/video/1K0QN8xy1kM/v-deo.html&pp=8AUB Hopefully you get as much enjoyment out of hearing something new as I did with "Black Night".
Exactly similar! How, in all of my 53 years of musical discoveries had I never heard this song before last weekend while watching college football? This song is a blast. I played it for my son on the way to school today. He'll hopefully remember it someday.
Gregg talked this up and so I gave it a listen-entranced! Is the song a reference at all to In the Pines at all, does anyone kno? Sounds like a play on the melody and also the “where did you sleep last night?” line. Interesting! Looove this track!
Leadbelly recorded this as "In the Pines", in the 30's I think, Long John Baldry sang it under the title "Black Girl", and Nirvana recorded it as "Where Did You Sleep Last Night". Sinatra Jr perhaps added a modern bit to it, but it's a traditional folk song goes way back to the 1870's anyway, # Not that I want to take anything away from Sinatra Jr.'s performance which is really good. It's a pity he wasn't better known because he is a top class performer judging from the couple of songs I've so far listened to. It must have been hard to live in his father's shadow, and try to make his own way getting the credit for his own talent.
I had a sneaking suspicion this was a Sinatra Jr song! I feel like he can't exactly reach the power that this song calls for in the chorus. Even so, I think this might be one of my new favourites from him.
+Geraint Rees Black night black night 'neath the silent starry light, here I wait for your footsteps, now... I have been lucky enough to follow Frank Sinatra, Jr for most of his career. He has a distinctive voice and an an awesome stage presence. For many years, he put his own music on hold to act as the director for his father and recently to honor his father with Sinatra Sings Sinatra shows. He knows and presents his father's music masterfully, but it is a shame that his own music and composing have not been in the forefront. Music lovers deserve to have songs like Black Night available in all formats. Check out his album, That Face, on iTunes or Amazon. It is a great selection of songs done in Frankie's own style.
Black Night Black Night 'neath the silent Starry light Here I wait For your footsteps now You have taken All my loving That I wished you To have I would take yours But I don't know how {Chorus} If there's a chance for What you hoped for And you'd dream for And you'd plan for How can you stand for The heartsore At hand? This movie is so fucked, and horrible, but horrible in that I couldn't stop watching, and this fucking song is so right on the same path...that it makes me wonder what I actually think of both.
Noel Johnson And don't get me wrong, his father was / is the greatest singer there will ever be in my generation (I'm 45). I seriously get depressed when I think of the inner turmoil Junior must have gone through all of his life because everyone compared him to his old man. Junior is in a class all by himself in my opinion. And personally I thought he was better doing his own stuff and not Sr's songs. Check out my UA-cam page. I managed to snag one of Junior's concerts.
Noel Johnson, I don’t agree! I like Frank Junior. And I think he does an excellent job with this song. It certainly is one of his best performances. But if you’re saying that this song is better than anything his father recorded, out of the thousands of songs that his father recorded, I do not agree.
