@Darryl Davis True as your point may be, it's those same analytics that make the game hard to watch at times. It's fun when teams are draining 3s at a high clip, but 35% shooting is an eye sore. It's a boring brand of basketball and doesn't lend itself to player development. Players are discouraged from shooting in the mid-range despite the fact that that's where the most space is on the floor. So we can highlight percentages as it relates to point totals, but more points =/= more enjoyable. It absolutely has it's place in the game, but it can definitely be overkill at times. Nothing wrong with a little physicality.
@Darryl Davis What's worse is the league is more protective of offensive players than ever. You simply CANNOT be a great defender in today's game. I love watching basketball but the premium that has been placed on 3 pointers is ridiculous.
Blame the players who think they’re Steph Curry. Blame the coach who allows his players to do this game in game out knowing his players are *NOT* Steph Curry. Why do the coaches and organizations allow their players to do this? Nobody is Steph Curry and the closest is Dame Lillard. In fact I’ll put Lillard in the same boat as Curry cus Dame is the most clutch player and the dude is box office straight up 💯 I guess yes Curry led players to believe they can shoot just as good as him and it’s just not correct. Heat you can practice and become a great shooter.. but Curry is simply gifted at shooting the ball. The mechanics, the fluidity, the running nonstop without the ball. He’s special for a reason 🤷🏽♂️
Well, it is a more difficult shot. The way the game was before 1979 (really before 2005)...bigs had the same advantage that hot-shooting guards and wings do now. I’m not sure there’s a way to balance all sides of basketball.
@@dereklewis4321 the problem is people are spacing the floor so you dont have to drive through a bunch of people... Making the 2 point shot easier. Its pretty obvious a 3 pointer is harder than a lay up. If you ever played ball you would know that. A contested 3 is just as hard as a contested lay up. Obviously a wide open 3 should be going in but they dont always do.... A wide up lay up is going in 99.9% of the time... They cant be worth the same.
Analytics are great and 3s are great. The problem is that it's too easy to shoot 3s because it's unguardable thanks to foul calls. The league is less interesting when every team just drives and gets fouled, or kicks it out (and probably still gets fouled lol). If you allow actual defense, the 3 point efficiency will go down, and post-ups/midrange shots will make more mathematical sense. Teams will have to be more strategic on offense/defense, and games wouldn't be so repetitive. Meanwhile, Luka and Trae won't be jumping into defenders to get to the line, and players will complain less about calls... so there will be less pointless ejections.
That's more of an issue with the refs than with 3's and analytics. The refs need to be held accountable if they make bad calls instead of being shielded by the NBA
@@BaithNa Exactly my point, although I don’t think it’s a problem with refs... it’s a problem with refereeing. The league makes the rules, the refs just enforce them. I think the league has to step in and change the foul situation.

The Warriors consistently lead the league in mid range jumpers during their dynasty The Rockets started this three point craze because that was the only way to match Golden State's offense But you cant blame D'Antoni because that wont get nearly as many clicks smh
It was before Houston though.. D’Antoni broke the league with his 7 seconds or less offense. After that it became OK to take bad shots if you are a good shooter early in the shot clock. That’s now normal as dribbling the Basketball.
D'Antoni laid the foundation in Phoenix, the Warriors used it to win, and then D'Antoni took it to the extreme in Houston. In their 65-17 season, Houston took more 3's than 2's. But you know what they say, Live by the Three, Die by the Three.
Other teams ruined the nba, not curry. Warriors are taking 3s bcoz they have 2 of the greatest shooters in nba history. Imagine if reggie miller and ray allen were on the same team, i would be an idiot coach if i dont let them shoot threes.

The rule against dunking first started with Wilt before they brought it back. He also caused the lane to be widened. Wilt was the cause of many rule changes to make the game harder for him but it didn't because he still own 68 stand-alone records.
The point is there are only two snipers from long range and that's steph and dame. The game has gotten weak because nobody can hit a 2 pointer or 3 pointer consistently

This debate is nonsensical to me as a non-American who enjoys the game of basketball. Basketball at it's core is about who can score the most before time runs out so why not get the highest score using the 3??
You need to eliminate the 3-in-Key Rule. Allow defenses to implement a Zone defense. The Rule was created in order to emphasize "dunking" in the League and came right after Vince Carter won the Dunk Contest. Now with teams shooting so much from 3, the three point shot has become a much more efficient, reliable, and organic floor spacer. Therefore, there is no reason to keep the 3-In-Key rule.
*WE DONT NEED LESS 3’s* What we need is *MORE* Defense. How about bring back hand checking 🤷🏽♂️ How about players actually play better defense and pick players up near half court 🤷🏽♂️
*One of my biggest issues* with this segment from Chris and Rob is that literally yesterday or the day before Chris was pushing for the NBA to have a 4 point line.. which in turn means he agrees with the long distance shooting and keeping it all going. Now he turns around and largely agrees that we have to diminish the 3 point shot to a large degree. Which is it?? Are these guys paid to push topics and play the villain or are they keeping it 💯 with us in their opinions... It’s wrong to take away from those like Curry and Lillard and Klay who have put so much hard work and effort into their shooting craft.. to try and limit their amount of 3’s and shots they take. Who are we who aren’t pro players or putting in their practice routine and playing these games to tell them how they should be playing? Didn’t Bird tell a reporter that MJ can’t win a ring or become the greatest player unless your team is led by a big? Now when Steph changes the game we try and halt everything and manufacture the game back to what we want it to be and what we think is right? That’s fake basketball.. that’s WWE. And most of all that’s selfish to the pro players who put in the time and effort to shoot how they shoot. Play defense, bring back hand checking, stop the refs from calling Kleenex fouls and we will have competitive basketball 🤷🏽♂️💯💯
And you have to ask yourself. Do you really want to watch guys just stand around and shoot threes all game? Back before the 3 took over, guys played all different types of ways and scored all types of ways. Now it’s just high pick and pop or one drive and dish to corner three all game long. Coaches instruct players not to go after offensive rebounds after they shoot so they can get back on “defense” so essentially we just have a 3pt contest going on for most of the games. The only way it would change back is if somebody won a chip without being considered a 3pt shooting team since this is a copycat league
The 3 is why I hardly even watch basketball anymore. And basketball is the only sport I've ever consistently watched my entire life. Now it seems ever shot is a 3 or dunk. Just not as fun to watch anymore. Everyone shooting 3s that can't even shoot. When you got Dwight Howard and Javelle McGee wanting to shoot 3s? Game over!

The midrange jumper still matters, especially in the playoffs, where every possession counts. It's true that 3 > 2, but also, 2 > 0. In the playoffs, where every possession is important, you have to take the best shot available, doesn't matter whether it's a 3 or a midrange or in the paint, at least you score on offense, and get a stop on defense, you win. Simple, right?
Do y’all think if they brought back hand checking It would help balance out the scoring boom? Because with all the spacing now from the 3 point line players will still score and get to the rim. But it would give players a chance on defense
Analytics ruined it for me. The mid range jumper got removed from the belief that they don’t matter. In the playoffs, the players getting 20 points plus all have a midrange jumper and go to it when they need points.
Hand checking ban, def 3 seconds, no bigs in paint and small ball, is why mid range can be avoided. If 2 bigs still guarded the paint, got to be physical, and hand checking still was allowed, they’d pull up for that mid range.

They gotta have some resistance in the game. The game don't I inspire people no more. Go back to old rules for 1 year and you will see who can really play. I've always believed that nba basketball is about as fans seeing stuff that you cant see somewhere else. The reality is those Lillard and Curry's half court shots is the best the nba has to offer over any other form of basketball b/c professional dunkers/ street dunkers are better dunkers than nba players. Then how does the league separates from the street. I think is those amazing shots, love or hate.
I dnt think it's ruined...it is more exciting to watch nba now. Players taking threes and the ball movement to make an open three...looks more exciting than most the iso plays..
It's not Stephs fault. For whatever reason it took a million years for teams to figure out that 3 > 2 and players started practicing shooting more. It's also the leagues fault for not allowing players to play defense any more. Everything is a foul now and shooters don't have to worry about being blocked on their shot
The Lakers won a title last year without being an elite three point team. They won with defense and post play. Parker is just a hater. Curry ability to shoot is not something that can be duplicated by anyone currently in the NBA. Also this ruined the game argument is always said by a previous generation. People said the same about shaq, Jordan, and others.
It was the same way in tye early 2000's when Michael Jordan was midway done in his career everyone tried to be like Mike and take the last shot every nba player thought they was clutch no ball movement just straight hero ball.
Very true, hero ball was straight team cancer. MJ did it so well, and every star player that copied him afterwards were like cheap knockoff clones. We're seeing that with Steph now (Trae Young).
@@StudentDarnellJones you don't think increased intensity on defense would lower most players 3 point percentage? What kind of alternate universe are you living in? This argument is like saying they should b running the ball instead of throwing it. Every offensive innovation needs a defensive adjustment. Defenses need to start from mid court. If not u get lighted up. Am all for the 3’s
One team makes 2 threes then the other team shoots 2 threes and miss. Next thing u know they're down by 20. Just get a basket that's my issue. It's exciting if ur making them but there's way too many blowouts if u don't. 2 pts still keep u in the game...
I agree with everything Rob said..the 3pt shot has turned the game into nba2k..as long as you can shoot 3s and dunk you can get a deal..no more post game..midrange shots..one dribble pull ups..the game is boring now..you just watch the last 5 minutes of every game because all teams do is chuck up 3s
Not just Steph but Golden State. Having two of the best shooters made them prioritize the 3 as a strategy. They were able to outshoot everyone and the other teams have tried to adopt the same strategy. The foreign teams have been playing this way forever. Positionless basketball. Everyone can handle and shoot regardless of position. It’s not a new way of playing.
What’s funny is just 10 years ago sports heads complained about the league needing better guard play and they got their wish they’re just salty because it’s not the type of guard play they wanted
I feel like if they get rid of positionless basketball and make it mandatory for the 5 position that will slow down the 3 shooting because you can't have that many shooters on the floor at once. Even with stretch 4's there not as good a shooters as guards. Also bring back hand checking
Teams are not playing a true zone defense but without question the 3 ball forces teams to open up defensively...I honestly don't know how the NBA can fix this other that implementing a crazy rule like a cap on the points you can get from deep...which would have unintended consequences so this is the new NBA get used to it.
That’s how sports have always worked. Guys with elite talent have always come along and played in ways that conventionally were seen as the wrong way to play but their talent was at a level that they were successful doing it so they were allowed to continue to do it. And when people saw that success they wanted the results but often didn’t appreciate the talent level required for it to work. And the copy cats often didn’t succeed trying it. It boils down to the rest of the league being able to recognize that they don’t have the talent to copy it and because of that stop doing something they aren’t going to succeed doing. But there will always be players who have a higher level of talent that allow them to do things that as a whole are seen as the wrong thing to do and as long as the person succeeds doing it they’ll keep doing it. Others just have to have the wisdom and maturity to know what they’re good and not good at and play accordingly.
I'm relatively new to basketball since 2012.. so I got a tiny bit of 'normal' basketball. Then I saw spurs crush the cavs in 2014 with beautiful movement of the ball. GSW were known for chasing down any lead in the 3rd quarter with again amazing movement of the basketball but also 3 top shooters. However I am concerned with the amount of 3s now.. its difficult to watch at times. Its exactly why the heat lost in 2020.. too reliant on the 3s. I don't expect this to change now because 3 points is better than 2 and as a player it's less taxing on the body.
No. LeBron James and in suit, James Harden have RUINED the NBA with their ridiculous flopping. Because of that, there's a lack of Defense now because no one wants to get fake fouled out. LeBron James got a whole NBA championship by overturning the Warriors from that and prevented the Warriors from beating the Chicago Bulls record.
The League as a whole hasn't abandoned shooting the midrange shot or Dunks & LayUps so I don't see the problem. All that's happened is your team has to keep up with 3pt shooting. You can't get away with ignoring it when building your roster or developing your skillset as a player. That's it. Doesn't mean the core of everyone's game is the 3pt shot or a team's best way to win is to only shoot 3s. There's still variety, it's just that 3pt shooting has become the baseline or foundational skill your team or players must have stock in. If guys take a bunch of irresponsible 3s with hands in they're face they're gonna miss & they're gonna lose, Still.

I hate too much tampering with the rules but the game has definitely swung too far the other way. The balance point between the 3ball, post, mid range, dunks and layups has gone too far in the direction of the 3. Players shoot better than ever, but its adversely affected the variety of the game. Everyone now strives to do the same thing, develop the same skillset, and teams now just try to 'out 3 point' the other team, regardless of whether they control their turnovers, out rebound or otherwise out-strategize the other team. It's been boiled down to a simple 3>2 equation and it's just....not all that enjoyable to watch. Asides from Dame and Stephs long 3ball shenanigans which admittedly was entertaining, theres nothing special about the play otherwise. Nobody plays D until the end, and it's just everyone running up and down the court till they can find a good spot to launch a 3 pointer. Its boring ( IMHO).
I get that but logic would lead one to believe that teams would try this for awhile and then when it doesn’t succeed (not playing defense, not controlling the ball well, not rebounding etc.) and they lose a lot that they’d adapt their style rather than forcing something that hasn’t been working. But the issue is largely that a lot of teams and/or players can be stubborn and insist on doing it even if a pivot that better suits their skill sets would produce more success. And that falls on those in charge to lead properly and push people in a direction that they can succeed in over being adamant themselves or accommodating a players insistence on this style working. GS has always done it because it’s always worked for them but if it wasn’t I don’t think Kerr would allow them to keep doing it
Ruined the NBA?! Y’all say “get in where you fit in” but now it’s an issue when he found where to fit in lol. You can’t be mad at him for that, everybody trynna ride his wave.
The high-percentage shot & the rebound are lost arts...in basketball(?). Ralph Samson and Hakeem Olajuwon would win 7 titles in a row today. Which general manager will bring basketball back to the hardwood?
On average, dunks account for about 4 % of all field goal attempts. By contrast, teams attempt on average 30 three point attempts out of about 83 total per game. Leave the three where it is. Resuscitate and re-elevate the Big man and the sky walker and make the Dunk and the alley opp three point plays.
this would be like hating jordan for spawning decades worth of leapers and dunkers who cuolndt shoot a lick go on somewhere old timers. its clearly nap time
How about the league ruined the game by not taking all of the defense, contact, and emotion from the game. You cant even frown without these refs giving you a tech. The whitstles and the soft rules ruined the game.
Let the game get physical again and it goes back to the big man. Robinson, mourning, malone, Ewing, olajuwon, shaq.... the new softie rules took it away from the big man but now its gone too far.
The importance of the 3pt line in today's league is a byproduct of that 5 year championship run in Golden State. Especially the last 3 years when KD was on the team. GS was hitting threes at a high clip and had three elite shooters in Steph, Klay, and KD. Not to mention the Warriors were the first team to initiate the "death lineup" which is basically small ball. Draymond was the center, Iggy was the power foward, KD was the SF, Klay was the two guard, and Steph of course the point. That way they had 5 guys on the floor who could all knock down threes. Because of how efficient they were as a 3pt shooting team the rest of the league felt as though they needed to prioritize perimeter shooting as well so they could keep up and compete.
People should be blaming the Rockets. They are the team attempting more than 50% of their shots behind the arc for 3 years straight. They are what the league is emulating, not Steph Curry & the Warriors.
Let's be real it's time to implement a 4 point line. Since everybody wants to shoot from downtown anyway give them 4 points for making it from from uptown lmao. I think the NFL should give 6 points for 60 plus yard kicks. If not 6 reward them for distance at least. I mean why is a 27 yd kick worth the same as a 57 yard kick

@Darryl Davis What's worse is the league is more protective of offensive players than ever. You simply CANNOT be a great defender in today's game. I love watching basketball but the premium that has been placed on 3 pointers is ridiculous.
You just disqualified your argument. He got everybody trying to shoot the 3. Nobody play defense, no big men and lot of poor shooting
Who cares the league sucks now
Steph a different level from dame
@KC Jones wrong. Players just are lazy & don’t want to risk injury. That’s the main reason they are taking so many 3’s
Dame is better than Steph.
Dame has 2 mvps and three championships plus the head to head in playoffs he beat steph and and go to the finals
Any opportunity to hate on Steph..smh
Don't hate the player, hate the game. It's all the league's fault. The ability to space the floor should be enough without giving one extra point
Agreed. All shots should be worth 2 points, and free throws worth 1 point.
Well, it is a more difficult shot. The way the game was before 1979 (really before 2005)...bigs had the same advantage that hot-shooting guards and wings do now. I’m not sure there’s a way to balance all sides of basketball.
@@swpdisciple id say driving threw a group of peoples to get a 2 pointer is a more difficult shot than a 3.
@@dereklewis4321 you’d literally be talking about pre 1979 basketball.
Okay but you can’t hate on Steph because a bunch of below average shooters want to jack up threes. What’s he supposed to do? Not shoot threes?
You’re missing the point dummy

The Rockets started this three point craze because that was the only way to match Golden State's offense
But you cant blame D'Antoni because that wont get nearly as many clicks smh
💯 D’Antoni is the God Father of the modern NBA.
It was before Houston though.. D’Antoni broke the league with his 7 seconds or less offense. After that it became OK to take bad shots if you are a good shooter early in the shot clock. That’s now normal as dribbling the Basketball.
Morey philosophy was 3pt shots, layups, or freethrows. They were always top 3 in 3pt attempts every season.

The common thread among all of these guys are that they are so great that they changed the game forever and their legacies are cemented in history
Yeah but that was one player, now a days everyone thinks they’re curry, chucking up threes 😂😂
The rule against dunking first started with Wilt before they brought it back. He also caused the lane to be widened. Wilt was the cause of many rule changes to make the game harder for him but it didn't because he still own 68 stand-alone records.

This debate is nonsensical to me as a non-American who enjoys the game of basketball. Basketball at it's core is about who can score the most before time runs out so why not get the highest score using the 3??
At the end of the day 3 is always going to be more than 2 lol. If that 3 is working for me, then I’m gonna keep shooting it🤷🏾♂️💯
You need to eliminate the 3-in-Key Rule.
U say the same thing
I think if they bring back the hand check rule or an updated version of it, we’ll see less 3pt shots and more variety of offences.
Imagine being criticized for changing the game😂😂🤦

Steph ruined the nba for being too good,
Steph> MJ

I think teams should try to master the Texas Tech and Baylor type of defenses to slow down the volume of threes ,but NBA shooters are so good and move better without the ball so it'll be a difficult task for the defense to work .

Too many 3s is boring af to watch.
Keep Parker on the left!!! Better view with the window alignment and Rob is devilish lol
I solution imo is allow more physical play on the defensive side. Maybe bring back hand checking.

Scoring more points than the other team is still the name of the Game Right? nothings change. it just Level up.
Teams are not playing a true zone defense but without question the 3 ball forces teams to open up defensively...I honestly don't know how the NBA can fix this other that implementing a crazy rule like a cap on the points you can get from deep...which would have unintended consequences so this is the new NBA get used to it.
one solution could be moving the 3pt line at least 3 ft back and make the court a little larger so you dont have to get rid of the corner three
That’s how sports have always worked.

People always forget that the GSW were a great defensive team too, at least 2015-2018
People should be blaming the Rockets. They are the team attempting more than 50% of their shots behind the arc for 3 years straight. They are what the league is emulating, not Steph Curry & the Warriors.
