  • Meniscus tears are common knee injuries. It is usually caused by a sudden twisting motion or an injury to the knee. Symptoms include persistent knee pain, swelling, locking of the knee, and difficulty in extending the knee fully.
Who is at risk for meniscus tears?
    - Those who play sports, especially pivoting and contact sports such as soccer, basketball, netball or rugby.
    - Older patients with less trauma as their meniscus tissue quality is poorer.
At NUH, the doctors from Division of Sports, Shoulder & Elbow Surgery will access and diagnose a meniscus tear by ordering imaging test, such as an MRI scan.
If the meniscus tears are small and you have no symptoms, our doctors might recommend physiotherapy. However, for patients with large meniscus tears or meniscus tears which are symptomatic, the doctor will advise that they go through a knee arthroscopy.
For patients with knee pain and swelling, it is important to consult our doctors to evaluate your injury.
