Be careful with your Hyundai (or Kia) door handles. Our Ioniq EV has broken door handles.

  • This video is about weak door handles on Hyundai cars. Both rear door handles on our 2020 Hyundai Ioniq Electric (38kWh) snapped during the cold winter months and then I discovered one had previously broken and glued back together by the previous owner. And all of this was when the vehicle was only two years old and done only 15,000 miles! From what I've since read, its a common issue with this handle design and effects many Hyundai and Kia models and will get replaced under warranty. However, its not a quick job as the handle has to get painted. So its best to just be careful with the handles and not pull them too hard, particular when its cold and the plastic is brittle.

    I have a 2018 Ioniq 50.000km and never had an issue with the handles so far, but it is good to know about this possible issue.
    Thank you !

      Yes, we never had an issue on our 28kWh Ioniq after 102,000 miles, so I do wonder if the handles are now weaker/thinner plastic. Its a common point of failure across the Hyundai range.

      I am tempted to open the handle assembly and see the state of it... just in case there are some cracks or other visible wear signs. That way I may be able to (hopefully) do something to prevent it from breaking later

      @@Alex-tj1zo Good idea. Maybe possible to put a small bit of foam where the two plastic parts touch to cushion the contact points.

    I have a 2018 model and it happened on one of my rear doors. Somebody at the dealership was reluctant to repair under warranty because the rear fitting had disappeared, it happened at night. However, it was fixed under warranty. Forums do mention it as a known problem.

    Just took delivery of a 2022 38kwh Ioniq which until the point of getting to me had just 15 miles on the clock. Within two hours of having it I had the rear right dear handle literally come apart in my hand. Absolutely shocking!

      Was it very cold? It seems that the plastic used can't cope with the cold.

    Its a known issue according to the hyundai forums. Plenty of people have had them break. Mines ok so far. Some people just remove the broken parts and araldite them back together. But if under warranty just get the dealer to replace it.

    My rear door handle broke and the end cap was lost at just 3k miles. Local dealer replaced it under warranty although they initially and incorrectly thought that the missing bit would prevent a warranty claim.

    • @GoGreenAutos
      @GoGreenAutos  Рік тому

      Yes, some dealerships really do their best to charge the customer rather than making a warranty claim to the manufacturer. I've seen the paperwork a Renault dealer has to do, so I can understand why. Plus their labour rate is then reduced too.

    I have had two door handles break on my 2020 Ioniq and I have never had kids in my car and I am never pulling the handles too hard. I think this is an incredibly flawed design like you mentioned, it doesn't take much for the bolt to crack. Ironically, the driver's side door has never broken, the one that I use the most. It was the front passenger door and rear passenger door on the driver's side (the rear one I got fixed a year and a half ago and it is loose again). I am now out of warranty so I don't know how much it will cost to fix the handle at this point. Hyundai should do a recall on all ioniq hybrids because this is an issue that I keep hearing is happening to others. Extremely frustrating and my car only has 38,000 miles on it. The first handle broke around 15,000 miles and again I only gently pull on them to open. I have never heard of a car where the handles break so easily. Definitely buying Toyota for my next car.

    It happened to our 28kWh Ioniq. I wondered if it was guests/visitors who sit in the back who were yanking on the car door handle and causing the problem. No problem (fingers crossed) with the front. Car out of warranty now so I do not know how much the fix would cost now.

    My 28 version is trouble free. I waited for this morning before I commented and I noticed I put my thumb on the static part so as soon as the door is unlatched I’m then just pulling the door against the spring in the handle, only me gets in so luckily all is good… do you feel the 28 version has different or stronger handles..?

    • @GoGreenAutos
      @GoGreenAutos  Рік тому

      It certainly would have made the plastic brittle and wouldn't have helped. But even so, they shouldn't break when cold.

  • @longmancarl

    I broke the rear handle on the yellow 28 I brought from you. My local hyundai dealer wanted £175. I left the car with them about 2 weeks later to do a mot and replace the handle. When I came back they said they forgot to get it sprayed so they said they could fit the unpainted handle or I could come back. So I took it back a week later and they fitted it with no charge, not sure if that's because it's a known issue as I believe the car was out of its 5 year warranty and had done 103000+ miles.

    • @GoGreenAutos
      @GoGreenAutos  Рік тому

      Interesting. Apparently Hyundai will cover it under warranty, but of course that relies on the dealership to actually ask and claim and many will do their best to resist that route if they can.

      You can glue them back in place and then just be careful with them. It's been a year since we did and I've not had them replaced.

    Had this happen on mine, same break - as you say though, will be annoying to have to have it in for a couple of days to have the handle replaced, and from what I gather they just replace it with something of the same design, so likely to happen again.
    Have you got any recommendations for a suitable glue to put it back together temporarily?
