I was terrified of this too! I thought I was the only one! I would run into the kitchen and hide behind the wall while my mom muted the TV, and I wouldn't go back until she said it was over. I've been looking for this clip for a long, long time! I wasn't scared this time, thank goodness, but I can understand why I was. The fear of the clowns and noise, and the train coming straight at the screen is truly fear inducing, especially for a young child.
I'm not afraid of trains, I actually like them, and worked as a passenger van driver for Renzenberger, which is a company that transports railroad workers around the train yard and to various sidings near roads where the trains stop to exchange crews. So I've been around a lot of trains and like them a lot. Strangely, I sometimes have reoccurring nightmares of walking through a train yard beside the tracks. All the tracks are very close together. I would be walking and minding my own business, when suddenly many trains come speeding through very fast and in different directions, nearly hitting me. I jump from track to track to dodge them. The noise is really loud, too. A lot of times, I'm able to climb up a pole to escape them. Sometimes the trains collide with one another causing huge, explosive crashes. As scary as the dream is, I sometimes enjoy them, because the trains are incredibly beautiful in design. Some are classics, others are modern or futuristic looking. None of them actually look like trains that really exist. They have very unique designs, shapes and colors. If it wasn't for the fact that they were going 100 mph in the yard, when the speed limit in a train yard is 10 - 15 mph or slower, the dreams wouldnt be so terrifying.

@William W. Campbell-Shepherd IX I totally agree with you that a traumatic event causing fear can eventually cause an affinity for what had once traumatized someone. When I was 10, the October 1st, 1987 Whittier-Narrows earthquake struck my neighborhood (Whittier, California, 5.9Mw). I had Tremophobia for many years after that. Then I started studying about earthquakes and other natural disasters, and now I'm no longer afraid of earthquakes. One of my favorite movies is the drama miniseries "10.5" and "10.5 Apocalypse" about extremely powerful earthquakes that destroy America's west coast and Mississippi Valley.
I have even been able to predict earthquakes within 24 hours ahead of their occurence, but usually only ones I can actually feel. I dont quite know how I'm able to do this, but I've done it successfully 18 times since the January 17, 1994, 6.7 Mw Northridge "Martin Luther King Jr Day Quake." On September 1st 2020, I predicted a quake would happen on September 17th. And then on September 17th, a 4.5 Mw quake did occur at 11:39 pm El Monte / San Gabriel.. It wasnt the size nor the location I predicted it would be thank goodness (7.4 Mw, Modjeska Canyon, 16 miles southwest of Riverside), but it happened on the day I knew it was going to happen, and it was big enough for me to feel, and that's what counts, at least in my opinion. So yes, it is very possible for someone to lose their fears of something and begin to have an interest in experiencing them.

@William W. Campbell-Shepherd IX Thanks a lot, and I'm glad you liked the comment. I try my best to be factual and honest as best I can. You're lucky that you understand meteorology as that's a topic I have difficulty understanding. I find it interesting that you wanted to be a funeral director. I wouldnt be able to do that as it would most likely affect my PTSD from military combat. I would like to know more about your experiences, so please share anything you'd like to.

I was terrified of this when I was a kid! From other comments, I'm surprised, BUT GLAD to see I'm not the only one. Whenever this came on, I would run into the kitchen and hide behind the wall while my mom muted the TV, and I wouldn't go back until she said it was over. I've been looking for this clip for a long, long time! There was no "Stay behind the yellow line" back in the early 1980s though. I wasn't scared this time, thank goodness, but I can understand why I was, having seen this again. The fear of the "clowns" (which I was also terrified of) and noise, and the train coming straight at the screen is truly fear inducing, especially for a young child. I'm surprised Sesame Street continued to air this, as they probably got lots of angry letters from parents saying it gave their kids nightmares. Plus there is no educational material in it. They could have gotten the same message across without having a train barrel through it. What were they thinking? "Let's make little kids think a train is coming straight at them!" Worst. Idea. Ever.
If it wasn't for the fact that they were going 100 mph in the yard, when the speed limit in a train yard is 10 - 15 mph or slower, the dreams wouldnt be so terrifying.
One of the earliest motion pictures ever made and showed in theaters in the late 1800s had a train passing by. I saw this video elsewhere on UA-cam. There was a panic in the theater because the people (grown adults, mind you) thought that the train was actually going to come through the screen and run people over inside the theater. However, that video did not have the train come straight for them. The train came forward, but since the camera was not on the tracks, it "disappeared" towards the left of the viewers.
Thanks for reading, if you got this far. Just dont show this clip to your own children... "Hey little Billy, want to see what scared the heck out of me when I was little?" WORST. IDEA. EVER.

The point of the "Train approaching" announcement is that I was trying to make it seem less scary. I take the bus, subway and sometimes commuter rail, and I hear "train approaching" at any of the stations on the Providence line of the MBTA commuter rail. Such as at Hyde Park, Readville, Route 128, or Canton Junction station, just to name a few of the commuter rail stations on the Providence line, when the MBTA commuter rail, Amtrak or Acela approaches.

A train whizzing close by like that actually happened with a neighbor of mine while she was road trippin' with friends when she was young. They were tired and couldn't find a camp nearby, so they just pulled over and pitched a tent in a clear area. With everyone else asleep, a friend heard a strange noise, woke up everybody and told them to get out immediately. Since it was dark, they didn't notice they pitched their tent inches from railroad tracks! They ripped the tent out of the ground seconds before a train passed by...Needless to say, they were terrified just like Bob & Luis here! The neighbor shared this story with us yesterday during our first indoor gathering since the pandemic, all of us fully vaccinated.

I'm cracking up over the "Train Approaching" announcement! I live in Chicago, IL, and we have 'L' trains for public transportation. There are only automated announcements on the trains for calling the stops, and a few stations will say something like "an outbound train from the Loop will be arriving shortly." There certainly weren't any automated announcements like that in the early 70s when this video was made.

Here I am 48 years old and watching this classic clip of Louis and Bob making a poster of a tunnel that eventually has a train come right to the TV screen. I watched this when I was like 4 or so and to this day love this clip. However why the hell would they revise it with a red blinking sign train approaching stay away from yellow line? That right there ruined the whole effect of the train coming to the TV screen blowing the whistle coming practicly to your living room putting a scare in you. The ones that revised it like that should put the original clip back on.

In the 21st Century, automated announcements are more common because they are easy to do with digital sampling, multiple announcements can be randomly triggered, and announcements can be changed remotely by transferring sound files. When this was made in the 70s, it could only have been done with a loop of tape. In Chicago, and I'm sure in other cities, trains and buses have automated stop announcements so you don't have to recognize a stop visually to know where to get off a train or bus.

It Would Have Been Weird, If It Were An Upside Down Train Tunnel

This TERRIFIED me as a little kid.
I don't remember the voice saying to stay behind the yellow line; did they add that later? I was in the really early crop of Sesame Street watchers.
It always seems like both Bob and Luis were going to get sucked under the train, to me.

No, I added the "Train approaching! Please remain behind the yellow line!" alert myself. I recorded the message from one of the loudspeakers at Canton Junction commuter rail station when a train was approaching over the horizon.

This didn't scare me at all when I was little, because I knew the train was made from cardboard.

    • @flatcapman

kids got scared because of the 3D effect Not everyone played chicken with the cars or real life trains on a railway track like you obviously did as a kid

I remember this so well and loved it ! Rip bob and Luis you guys were wonderful together! Btw I was never scared of this but the image of that tunnel stuck with me for years and couldn’t place it till now

@@sharonbeckerle8735 I was scared of it as a kid but as an adult I admire how they did it and considering I watch far worse Horror wise this is more charming then scary but a niffy 3D effect with the train. I found the SOME NONE one more creepy how the singer walks at the camera then flops onto the lens

Josh-Now that you mention it,yes, they are like Buddy and Jim here! Or Wally and Ralph, for that matter, also from the early days, who were also just like B&J,in terms of acting stupid, over the easiest solutions to things.
