This is where the confusion is : - Most people associate "dreadlocks" or respectfully called "locs" with Rasta / Jamaican culture when in actuality it's a cultural staple of many Black / African Cultures that have a lot more depth than people understand. - Reducing it to Rasta is an oversimplification which mainly reflects the disconnect between the understanding of African hairstyles, lifestyles and ceremonies. It becomes an issue when one adopts the style for personal choice without having a good understanding of the culture - it creates an continuation of misunderstanding that actually affects black people who actually wear the style of locs in our day to day lives, globally. As a black man living in Asia for years, I've experienced this daily and these things daily. Not everyone is prejudiced but I will often see people who will blurt negative stereotypes because they feel comfortable to do so based on their skewed understanding of black culture and society.
