  • Trying to chase down no spark in the lower cylinder. I never dealt with points yet but one of them is tight and one is loosey-goosey. Those coil packs look replaced already. I’m assuming that loose point is the culprit correct?

Did Ben get you setup on the points issue ? He really good at spotting things . I have a few of them 20’s and I really like the power they have !

Hey there! First, those.coils.are likely just fine. The blue OMC coils are typically pretty good ones. It looks like your points for the bottom cylinder have the leaf spring out from behind the tab on the fixed half of the points. The leaf spring should be on the inside of the vertical tab and held there by that copper colored clip. That may be why that set of points feels loose. It doesn't look like it is holding the points closed like it should. Compare where the spring is on the set for the top cylinder to see how the spring is supposed to sit. Let me know if you need any more clarification. 👍

Yeah I finally saw that same thing. Was gonna change it out with one from my 18hp Johnson that is now junk cause a bolt broke. When I was taking it apart on the 18hp, I noticed the little keeper clip that is missing on the 20. Fixed it right up but it got dark, so tomoro I’ll see how she runs. Also ran some fine sandpaper between both points to clean em up a bit.

When I took the flywheel off the 18hp Johnson, I saw firsthand what the old paper coils do, itsa mess under there, good thing the bolt(the big bolt for the gearcase) broke cause that motor is a cancer.

@@TheFrogfeeder Glad you got the points fixed on the 20hp. The large bolt that holds the gearcase on broke on the 18? I assume it twisted off while trying to loosen it. That can be saved. I had that happen recently myself on a '58 Johnson 18. Some Kroil soaked for a couple days and then I welded a hex nut on the end. On the second try it started to move and I was able to work the broken part out of the hole. Those 18s are awesome motors. It's worth trying to save it. 👍

@@oldjohnnyrude8404 man I wish my 18 was that easy, the aluminum around the bolt had a very slight hairline crack, and I guess over the years corrosion set in... the entire side of the bolt hole just crumbled, and the bolt head broke off. I was digging at the “aluminum” with my fingernail, but I think it was mostly just corrosion. All under the crack and wasn’t visible from the outside. So now you can see about 50% of the rusty bolt stuck in the good aluminum on the opposite side of the bolt hole...I’d have to cut all the corrosion out and recast the piece! And, it happened when I was trying to change the impeller while the guy who wanteEDto buy the motor was watching :(

@@oldjohnnyrude8404 unhappy to say, to save my sale, I sold the guy my 28hp speeditwin. Got more money, but I wanted to keep all my Evinrudes and sell the johnsons... BUT...I now have a guy that wants to trade his 33hp skitwin(a motor I missed out on a couple weeks ago) for my 25hp Johnson. I dunno if I’ll do it tho, the 25 is an original motor for my Barracuda, and the skitwin needs some parts and work...I have about 24 hours to decide... the 33 hp is 2 hp less than the max for the Barracuda, but my already 25 runs like new...the skitwin looks way better to me, but the 25 already runs like new...the skitwin would be a LOT funner on the Barracuda, but my 25 already runs like new...
