    • @LearnToGrow1
      @LearnToGrow1  4 роки тому +2

      If you want, you can let the flowers go to seed and collect the seeds or let the plants self seed, but they may grow wild. You can actually separate the plants if they’re established plants, two years since planted. Here’s a link to separating them, but it’s best to do this in early spring or in the fall. I'm still learning. I wasn't aware that cutting chives down would make them grow. I've been cutting a couple at a time when I'm making dinner. Can I cut chives while the blooms are in flowering stage? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I love my garlic chives. It's one of my favorite herbs and I've been growing mine for four year's.

    • @LearnToGrow1
      @LearnToGrow1  Рік тому +1

      Hi yes you can cut back established plants at least 1-2 years after planting. The blossoms can be harvested cutting the stalks at the base. They’re great to use for chive vinegar, herb butter, or salads. If you cut off the blossoms right when they emerge and before they open it will put more energy into producing more leaves instead of seeds.

      @@LearnToGrow1 : Awesome! Thank you so much. I use chives in almost every meal I make. I was just cutting what I needed when I needed it. I really wanted a bigger chive plant and couldn't figure out how to go about doing it. The information you gave me will go to great use. I'm now trying to grow more, but my seeds aren't popping. I thought about transplanting some of the existing chive plant to two of my pots. I'm hoping this will work. It's my fourth year gardening and I've had trial and error with it. I had rust for two of those years and figured out how to combat it organically. It was frustrating, but worth the fight. My fruit trees are blooming like crazy and my berry bushes finally look amazing. My chives were the only plant I never had problems with so it's kind of my favorite. I would just like more of it.😁

    Can someone explain why it can only regrow 2-3 more times? Idk anything about plants so in my head it would make sense that something like this would last forever if the plant is well kept

    • @LearnToGrow1
      @LearnToGrow1  2 роки тому

      Hi yes chives will regrow over and over and it is a perennial plant so it goes to a dormancy stage in winter then reproduces the following spring.
      For new transplants allow it to establish for the first year and cut back about once every 3-4 months. Once established, it can be cut back once every 4-6 weeks during the season. I’ll upload a new tutorial on dividing the plants.
