Tempo vs Time Signature... Do You Know The Difference?

  • Time Signature and Tempo are two things that often get conflated by Musicians.
    In a recent video where I ask musicians and drummers to "Guess The Time Signature" ...so many of the comments say things like "Well since it's slow, it must be 7/4 rather than 7/8 time signature."
    This is a huge misconception because the answer to any "Time Signature" challenge is completely subjective. The only "correct" answer is whatever time signature the composer used to perform or transcribe that piece of music. But either way... tempo has nothing to do with it.
    You can't tell a time signature by its tempo... nor can you predict the tempo simply by using a specific time signature. Both work together but are set separately and have separate functions.

    Interesting and as you said usually musicians do misinterpret that tempo and time signature information. I too thought that if the base value was an 8th or 16th note then that usually means the phrase in music would be fast played and I come more from a prog background but really tempo does dictate that more.

    To me the time signature shows how tempo (BPM) is divided up equally. It codifies the tempo...
