A common theme you'll find in Tyler's music is the cycles. He frequently talks about how every day is a new cycle where you need to make good choices again, you can't just coast on what you did in previous days/cycles. I take this song's meaning to be that every day you can easily get back in that rut, so you need to make the active choice every day if you want to do something different/follow God.

I agree but it is subtle enough so that it is a suggestion rather than stating that you have to get out of the rut right? I get really excited about 21 pilots and Tyler’s lyrics because I’m they are inclusive of all beliefs. I was Christian but through my experience I practice more meditation and I am open to a God of all cultures and this still speaks to me.

Think you're spot on with the meaning
Don't be afraid to give your opinions on their music - Tyler doesn't give his meanings to most of the songs because he doesn't want to ruin it for others if they have a different interpretation
There are definitely songs where he does and fans will help there but their music is meant to have many interpretations

This band means so much to me. I discovered them seven years ago. I was struggling in my faith and I heard "Addict With A Pen." I cried, I repented, and I've grown through my life in my faith with Twenty One Pilots. Both boys were raised Christian and still are, but the lyrics that Tyler writes have a lot of allusions to God and faith, so don't be afraid to speak your thoughts. I love hearing your thoughts of their music, and as a Christian, these are my golden boys. My favorite band I can always pick up if I need help in my faith or comfort when I start to question life.

Omg this comment is so beautiful! This is why I listened to Twenty pilots too. Also was in the exact season of questioning my faith when I started listening to them . Addict with a pen was incredibly relatable. Almost too personal. I went to their concerts twice and I sung “trees” like a worship song 😂

These early songs that seem a little bit more obviously about God are beautiful for me. These songs mean way more to me than the squishy Christian music you hear on the radio. These songs feel a lot more realistic. Confusion and doubt but also tons of reverence and love. They're my favorite of the TOP songs.

Dude, this is Twenty One Pilots. If you think you're overanalyising it, then you're doing it right. Some songs we have been told roughly what they mean, but mostly they're just up for you to make your own meaning of, like a kitchen sink ;)

This is a no skip song for me from this album. I am not a religious person and i have actually have doubted about my faith but this song makes me feel just I don't even know how to explain. That verse "Then the wages of war will start inside my head with my counterparts. And the emotionless marchers will chant the phrase this line is the only way"; I don't know but that verse and follow me instead specifically make me feel so different in a good way.

Really liked your reaction and interpretation. This is one of those songs that can go both ways at the end. Because Tyler often builds cyclical references into his music, I tend to think of it as a more hopeful cycle. Now that he has chosen to follow something else instead, he has that ability. It's there for the next time. He doesn't say he's put back in line but rather back in place. Now he's had an awakening. I always picture him looking up at the Banditos on the cliff in Jumpsuit when I hear this now. And he'll continue his March to the Sea bc we're all going there in the end. But this time, he's not stuck looking at just the person's back in front of him. He has a new direction he can turn in the next cycle.
Loved your reminder about kids experiencing things for the first time. I set out to do that with my child, giving the experiences I didn't get. Sometimes I sink into familiar ruts, though. Always good to get the reminder. So we can choose to start again. FPE |-/ 🤍🤍

this song makes me get emotional because when I listen to it I feel like I can relate to it
and I imagine Christ being the one who says 'Follow me instead'
I've been there in my life
    it's so true
a victory one day does not mean that's the end
it's a victory over one battle. The next day is another battle in the war
that doesn't mean it devalues any single victory. In fact, we should think the opposite. We should relish every little victory. Cherish it, remember it. Let it drive you for future victory.
and I don't just mean about this

I’ve had more confidence in interpreting Tyler’s lyrics since I quit trying to interpret them on first listen. If I hear the whole scope of the lyrics and then go back and pick it apart, I think I have a better chance of understanding. That doesn’t mean I’m not still puzzled by bits of the song, but that’s the fun of twenty one pilots for me! I wonder and I ponder, and finally I get a breakthrough that makes sense in the context of the song.

I love your reactions and enthusiasm.
My interpretation of the lyrics to this song: Feelings related to seasonal affective disorder, occurring at the same time each year, beautifully painting a perfect picture of the thoughts and feelings of one who is struggling with SAD and/or depression every day.
Thank you for what you do to support mental health and to bring awareness to the importance of mental health. Mental illness is no different than having diabetes, for example, it's a disease, no one asks to be diagnosed with diabetes, nor do those with a mental illness.

The musical production is beautiful and very good considering that it was made with very little money without labels and everything produced by Tyler (in addition to all the lyrics written by him), honestly really although Twenty One Pilots have a huge fandom they are very underrated. I look forward to your reaction to Taxi Cab, the third verse or bridge of the song is some of the best Tyler has ever written and it's beautiful to see how emotional he gets singing it even though he doesn't do it often for that reason

Ok so I am not religious so I have never associated their songs with religion. It wasnt until I started watching reaction videos did I make associations with religon. Before that I would always associate their songs with my life. To me this song always meant following society's rules until you find a new group that shows you something new so you follow them only to figure out its all the same and you are not Unique. Every song they do i associate with society, family, or personal experiences.

I'm going to see the Twenty One Pilots cinema experience tomorrow afternoon cuz I wasn't able to during the week. The band that I mentioned to you in the NF- Paid My Dues reaction, The Warning, has several songs about emotions, internal battles, and addiction. I would recommend reacting to the music video for their song XXI Century Blood, which has a powerful message about addiction to technology, or Black Holes which is about addiction to alcohol specifically but can apply to any addiction. They also have a few more recent songs like Choke, Disciple and Z that deal with anxiety/depression and the negative impact of social media on generation Z.
