This is the 1st US National Tour which opened at this theatre, the Shubert in L.A.. in 1980 and was L.A.'s longest running musical having run there for nearly 2 years, until Phantom beat it as L.A.'s longest after it's 4.5 year run at the Ahmanson.
There was also the 2nd US National Tour which opened in Chicago starring Valerie Perri as Eva in 1982.
A 3rd US National Tour opened with Florence Lacey in the title role at the Masonic Temple Theatre in Detroit in 1983.

This is the one I saw. I was in the front row (woulda preferred being back a bit) and at one point Holmes sat on the edge of the stage and I almost could've reached out and touched him (managed to resist, just barely)

The "SCREAM" by today's standards seems over the top and Melo-Dramatic, but seeing this several times in the early 80's I remember it had a genuine impact on the audiences. It pulled us in and we didn't know what we were about to see.

They still do the angry yell/sing today. In context, on a stage it makes sense. In a small video, it can seem like too much. It's why Banderas toned it a bit down in the film

@penti77 Okay, the reason the screaming seems over-the-top is because in a theatre context a scream, by default, seems to indicate FEAR rather than GRIEF. The screaming makes it seem like they just saw a zombie or a ghost or something. It's just funny.

@gvie56 it's Loni. Her pronunciation of some of the lyrics were very distinctive and she is using some head voice, not all belt. Although this is before I joined the company in July '81 I heard her often enough in the subsequent months to recognize her and Flo since I was Flo's understudy in the 4th National. Unless Valerie mimicked her--which I don't think she would have--this is Loni. It also looks like Loni's physicality and carriage--very different from Flo. I don't know Valerie personally but she was, from her costumes from SJCLO's version, more like Loni than Flo. PS I used to be Rufriben. They dumped my account when they switched over to Google.

@penti77 Oh. Thanks. Yeah, initially it seemed people wanted to say that I just don't know anything about theatre and that's why I didn't like the screaming. In fact, I grew up in theatre. The first production I ever saw of "Evita" had my dance teacher's daughter, Shoshana Bean, as one of the children of Argentina. Today, Shoshana is known for her starring role in Wicked on Broadway.

@EZYCHEESY What are you talking about? Theatre can be, and often is, very over-the-top.

But people were really like that when she died.

@GoddessofHyrule I know, it's much more appropriate to have Luigi Lucheni narrate the life of his murder victim, Empress Elisabeth of Austria. ;-)

@AngelorPhantom1359 Go to this video to see the nationally aired Public Broadcasting special I appeared in when I was 18-years-old: watch?v=47bxMN_yNkU
I became aware of the musical "Evita" because friends of mine were in a production. One such friend, Soshana Bean, went on to become a Broadway star in the musicals "Hairspray" and "Wicked." Go here to see Shoshana: watch?v=zRuA43Hjygk
In other words, I know about theatre, and I still think the screaming was over the top.

@penti77 -- Thanks. I wrote the Wikipedia article about Eva Peron, and I have a background in the performing arts. Go to this link to see me performing at age 18: ua-cam.com/video/0_Dwa2dJl1Y/v-deo.html I'm experienced with both topics, Eva Peron's history AND theatre. My opinion cannot be attributed to lack of experience. Thanks, though. :)

    OHHHH You meant Che.....
I thought you meant the random shrieks from the women.
    My baaaaaad.

I hate that scream after her death announcement. They've done it in all the tours and local productions I've seen. It's not really effective IMO 'cause the audience always giggles at the randomness, and it's supposed to be a somber occasion.

Che repreesnts the opposition. Believe me. At the time of Evita's death in Buenos Aires, the opposition was not going around screaming about what an awful woman she was. They wouldn't have gotten out alive!
