His hair aged like fine leaves. But he keeps replenishing. To be frank, it seems after the hair plugs gave up on him more than once, he has given up on them and is now just wearing a wig.
You nailed it. He's fantastic. Someone who you'd love to be neighbors with, because they are on that same wavelength of kindness and appreciation... and sure like anyone else, can be a dick, but I dig that.
I'm from just outside of Seattle and grew up watching Joel on that regional sketch show he mentioned, "Almost Live!." He's actually in one of my favorite skits from the series, "The Bully." After this interview look up "Almost Live The Bully" for a young grunged out Joel McHale. He's not ages at all, lol. It's been great to see his work grow and change over these last few decades. Also, another notable alumni from Almost Live! is Bob Nelson, who later went on to write "Nebraska." That show was a real gem of regional comedy, nothing but great talent all the way down the line.
Joel, my 17 year old son is also high functioning autism. Thank you for talking about how it's not a death sentence. We're all awkward and we all have areas to improve on, and autism is one example of a diagnosis that leads to awareness and making adjustments, which a good parent does for all their individual kids label or not. I'm glad you and your son openly talk about it (as do we in our household).
I saw an interview with him and Gillian Jacobs where they were joking about that. She said she always plays a prostitute/stripper/rape victim, and he said he always plays characters that are much bigger egotistical jerks that Jeff, lol. So they both said they loved the roles they had on Community.
Loved the Soup!! Going to share this episode with my 20 year old son, love that you kept with it, my son needs to know that everyone is out there just trying their best, find what you like and give it your all!!
How is that hard believe? It's been ages since if went off the screen (before coming back for a short period). The show sucked ever since Glover and Chase left.
Great to see this podcast has grown quite a bit since I last checked in. One of the best shows that's actively trying to contribute positively to our world, thanks Neal! BTW Joe List would be a great guest, and his podcast Mindful Metal Jacket is another comedic mental health pod I recommend to anyone that enjoys this.
I love that he references "Put One Foot in Front of the Other" from Santa Claus is Coming to Town. The whole song is great. "Well don't be the rule... be the exception."
The Joel McHale Show on Netflix was really funny. Simple format and great guest actors being silly. Really wish it could come back on some platform. Thanks for the laughs Joel.
I've always wanted to meet Joel McHale and tell him he's been my celebrity crush for over a decade so he can be rude to my face and tell me to go call my shrink. You have your fantasies, I have mine...
OMFG Neil! At 43:58 you said "Okay so how much support financially will you give your kids and for how long?". I swear an Ad popped up and Obama just said "5 dollars". I swear I started clapping.
If it is more accepted now, why not just say 'autistic'. I don't think it's a conscious choice on Joel's part, but as an autistic person it's intriguing to me how people try to soften it by saying 'on the spectrum'. It's autism and it's fine. My parents probably do the same thing but I definitely do not mind being called autistic because I am. Anyway, now I gotta go buy that book haha
I think saying “on the spectrum” was not to obfuscate the condition, but to indicate the variation and complexity of how processing differences express themselves in so many different and varied ways from person to person. I see that in the members of my own extended family! People are amazing with so many gifts and blocks❣️
@@janenoga7076 "Soften" not "obfuscate". It's something humans do all the time for a lot of different things - but mostly about medical conditions. Because there is still unfortunately a stigma with a lot of these conditions including autism. It doesn't bother me - I just find it interesting. I always say autism, though. I'm a college professor and it's one of the first things I tell my students on day 1 because I usually have at least one autistic student every semester. It destigmatizes it and lets them know that I understand and am an advocate.
I re-watch The Soup, there's a torrent/internet archive/g doc out there of the series from late 2007 til it's cancellation in 2015. Joel is hilarious at ripping on celebrities, because also while he's ripping on them for being vapid (watching the series is like watching the decline of Western culture too, it's great) he also takes the piss out of himself when he messes up. Makes it feel realer and just makes the other jokes land better if Joel isn't coming from a holier than thou route, even though the jokes are usually explicitly that.
This podcast is streets ahead.
Verbal wildfire!
If you have to ask, you are steets behind 🤓@@BonesEye42
I could not agree more! It's like a relatively hidden gem.
well done, fishbowl
Shut up Leonard, I heard about your prescription socks
Joel has aged like a fine wine, incredible actor and seems like a great guy
His hair aged like fine leaves. But he keeps replenishing. To be frank, it seems after the hair plugs gave up on him more than once, he has given up on them and is now just wearing a wig.
He does get better looking with age. #beardbeauty
He's more handsome than the guy who's famous for being handsome.
SIX SEASONS AND A MOVIE!!!! 🎥
Yes!!
And a movie!!!!!!!!!!!
Joel McHale is always a great interview guest. He's open, honest, and entertaining. Plus he seems to be very hardworking, deserves his success.
You nailed it. He's fantastic. Someone who you'd love to be neighbors with, because they are on that same wavelength of kindness and appreciation... and sure like anyone else, can be a dick, but I dig that.
Even when hes cooking terrible steaks and trying to hog the lime light in a show where hes meant to just sit down at eat?
@@armenkhatchatrian8748 Oh awesome, i love a good investigation!!
@@SoNoFTheMoSt wut
Also he always brings muffins.
I never missed Talk Soup & Soup. It was the highlight of the week. I especially love when a talk show host would visit and make fun of themselves.
I always miss the Soup- it was greatness

I will always respect Joel McHale. Real professional. Met him at a work the Cinematographer Guild Awards some years ago. Real class act.
It was so nice to see Joel McHale so genuine and open. He is always cast as a mean person.
I saw an interview with him and Gillian Jacobs where they were joking about that. She said she always plays a prostitute/stripper/rape victim, and he said he always plays characters that are much bigger egotistical jerks that Jeff, lol. So they both said they loved the roles they had on Community.
Joel is the BEST guy ever. Truly one of the good guys.
The soup was amazing because of you, Joel . I looked forward to you after putting the kids to bed :)
I love that Joel unironically ascribed a Nietzsche quote to Craig Ferguson 😂
Was he ever interviewed by Nietzsche? 😎
Dyslexics are allowed to not know what dead people said.
Thank you Neil Brennan, always tuning in, so helpful. I am it in the entertainment business and this podcast translates to us all💜👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻.
My God, this man beat male pattern baldness with a decisive blow
Hair replacement dr: It’s real hair! You can swim in it! You can wash it! You can comb it!
McHale: I’m gonna stop you right there.
Check out his appearance on will and grace. He was balding 30 years ago

Always liked Joel. Love how he talks about his beautiful wife and kids. Hard not to root for this guy. Great interview once again, Neal.
I'm a simple man, I see Joel McHale on Neal Brennan's podcast, I click
I'm a simple man
More like a basic man, parroting common UA-cam comments everyone has seen a bazillion times.
LOVE JOEL SO MUCH!!!! EVERYTHING HE'S IN IS AMAZING!!!! ANIMAL CONTROL IS SO GOOD! COMMUNITY! THE SOUP!!!
I completely forgot about Joe.
Hard to believe Community came out in 2009. What a great show!
How is that hard believe? It's been ages since if went off the screen (before coming back for a short period). The show sucked ever since Glover and Chase left.
@@maxmeier532 even at its worst, it's still on par with most comedies today. It was THAT good.

That's the funniest thing I've heard in a very long time
Will Hagle, you are a stone cold killer for that cutoff at the end. Excellent editing as always.
Thanks Neal. Another great show.
This is by far the most authentic I've ever seen Jeff Winger. I like it!
What a great conversation. They touched upon a lot of topics and spoke hard truth to many. Kudos!
Oh hell yeah! Much love from Ukraine🇺🇦🖤
It's so nice of you to guest one of the awesome cast from Community.

Supporting Neal
Almost Live was on channel 29B in Connecticut, when we had that switch.
Neal, when do you reunite with Bianca? I want more 'How Neal Feel'
I always liked Joel. After this podcast, I love this guy!
So cool he was a walk on for a national collegiate champion football school.
Just 8 and a half minutes shy of getting through the podcast without someone bringing up impostor syndrome. We were so close, folks.
Watching this after the s3 premiere of The Bear hits weird lol. #IYKYK
This Ep was awesome! Time for Rick Glassman now please 😊
As a certified Glassmanbopper, Ricky will not do well with Neal, and vice versa. He's too silly for this podcast. He's hilarious, though.
I can't believe he was on Almost Live!
The Soup was one of my favorite shows. Pop culture needs to be roasted!
McHale on the Soup made you appreciate how good of a comedian Tosh and his show was.
they did a revival of sorts on Netflix in 2018 called "The Joel McHale Show", but it only lasted 1 season :(
“Ayahuasca became the pickleball of drugs” Now that shit is funny!! I’ll be thinking about that all day, LOL
Laughed hard at that out loud 😂

Just saw him on The Bear!
Joel McHale is awesome! So glad too see him. I did not recognize this scruffy ruffian though 😂
I loved the Soup.
I love your show, but recently, UA-cam has attached more ads than a syndicated sitcom. It’s becoming difficult to watch…
Love the soup! Love Joel!!
Jim Belushi was really taking a pounding in this conversation
