    I've always pronounced the name as Rose-lee, but some locals do say Rauwsley - yer takes yer pick!
    In my day the Rowsley Sidings were referred to as the Rowsley Marshalling Yards, always a busy sight and a great day out for a young train-spotter!

      That makes me feel better about the pronunciation. Its not like me at all to get a name pronunciation wrong 😄.
      Good to hear memories of the sidings too. I've seen lots of old photos since going, and it never ceases to amaze me how different and quickly landscapes change once the railways move out

    Remember after an afternoon in Matlock riverside park or Matlock Bath promenade in the early 1960's my father parking in a lay-bye of the A6 next to the yard at about 6.30pm waiting for the down Midland (blue) Pullman Manchester bound. If it was late we could see the yard shunter fly shunting wagons on the flat yard. PUff- puff - puff, bang - bang - bang, brake squeal, bang - bang and the end wagon(s) shot off down the yard, back up and repeat down a different track.

      Great memories Brian.
      Would loved to have seen the Pullman.

    The Monsal Trail and Peak Rail = heaven. It is so thrilling to find buildings you just know are stations and other railway buildings ❤❤❤❤!

      Yep part of the mass closures of the 60s. Criminal looking back. I understand the they chose the hope Valley line and modernisation of the West Coast Mainline to Manchester.

    Great video Paul. I did wonder what route took you from Rowsley to the Haddon Hall Tunnel.....now i know. Cheers.

    What a super video that made! I’d forgotten about my takeaway scone and superheated tea which I seemed to be clinging onto forever. Having seen some other videos since I do wonder if that was the platform edging we saw at the newer station. Who knows!

    • @WobblyRunner
      @WobblyRunner  Рік тому

      That score did seem to last forever 😄.
      Well that stone was quite old. Would be amazed if its not something related.

    The company I used to work for had a factory at the site of the 1849 station, but it closed that site shortly before I started working for them back in 1987 and then sold it off for redevelopment. I never realised there was still the old station building there or I’d have made more of an effort to go and have a mooch round. 🙄

      I didn't realise it was inside there until very recently. I drive through Rowsley so often without giving it a thought.

    Thanks Paul. Wonderful location. That concrete line in the carpark certainly looks like the edging to a platform and certainly lines up with the right of way! Cheers cobber.

      I think you are right. I wasn't sure at the time but the more I think about it It does suspiciously look like platform edge

    I'd describe that station building as having it's heart ripped out of it. There is pretty much nothing inside on view (from memory) I can't recall a fireplace for instance. At least it is still there and as you say, the shops built around it to reflect the design. I was amazed at the amount of sidings for such a rural area. Was the "Grouse and Claret" pub the original Station Hotel do you know? Looking forward to the viaduct video, just don't know how to get up to it ?

    • @WobblyRunner
      @WobblyRunner  11 місяців тому

      You're right about the pub. I didn't realise until after I'd been.

    Interesting video Paul. Those circular things by the river. Could they be wells? But seems odd having wells near a source of water

    • @WobblyRunner
      @WobblyRunner  11 місяців тому +1

      I've since read somewhere that they used to pump water from the river. Not sure if they're something to do with that. I'm hoping someone recognises them 😄

    Been there a few times. A heritage line from Matlock to Bakewell would be great and I'm sure well used. The A6 bridge is the challenge and two more needed before Haddon Tunnel. Even if it wasn't for rail it could be used by walkers and cyclists. Can't see it happening though.

    • @WobblyRunner
      @WobblyRunner  Рік тому

      Well said.
      It does seem is odd the Monsal Trail ends just south at Bakewell. Wonder if there's land ownership issues.

    • @leegreveson
      @leegreveson 11 місяців тому +1

      They were pretty hasty taking down bridges weren't they... ! The northern portal of Haddon tunnel always seems flooded too (quite a few vloggers have been through it).
