      Based on that, we should maybe test even heavier arrows to see at which point we stop noticing energy increases?

      Should be momentum not joule

    • @jkre
      @jkre 2 роки тому

      @@chroma6947 Joule tells how good it penetrate and momentum how far. That's why arrows penetrate soft targets better than bullets (soft doesn't need kinetic energy as much as momentum, and bullets are high in kinetic energy and low on momentum, arrows have the opposite) but fail to penetrate hard targets such as armor, that bullets are able to penetrate.

    Very cool. To me it seems as though the Yew selfbows were better performing. One thing that I have noticed is that the shorter draw bows tend to be faster than the longer draw bows. IE, the 28" draw length bows shoot faster than the 30"+ draw weight bows.

    Hi Joe, really like your videos .
    i have a question, when drawing your warbow are you using your latisimus dorsi muscles in your back? i actually have a damaged clavicle and also really bad bad tennis elbow in both arms from years of scaffolding and weight training so i find it difficult to draw even bows of 47lb.
    and can only shoot about once a week.
    If you can give any pointers on the subject I'd be most greatful

    Wonderful pair of videos Joe. What amount reflex if any do some of these laminates have in comparison to the self yews? I know you mentioned one had natural deflex. Or maybe to word my question better, how much do you think an inch or two of reflex adds to the performance of heavy long bows at the otherwise same draw weight? Thanks again.

    Hello Joe. How many arrows can you shoot consecutively? How long does it take for you to get off 1, 2 and 3 sheaves of arrows in one go? What draw weight do you have to drop down to in order to shoot all these arrows? There you have a good test you could do for the camera. A test like that will get your name into academic articles for sure. This is one of the big unanswered questions in regard to huge battles like Crecy, Verneuil and Agincourt. How many arrows could they shoot and within what time frame? You're probably the only person capable of doing such a test. And for the record, I'm not talking about speed shooting. Only 6 arrows or so per min in the beginning.
    According to the Eulogium Historiarum, some archers loosed over a 100 shafts at the battle of Poitiers in 1356 before the battle was decided. Geoffrey le Baker indicates that in order to do this they had to recover arrows from the ground and from the bodies of “half-dead wretches” during a pause in the fighting.
    That's another fun test. First 50 arrows or so, then a 10 min break, and another 50 arrows. Cheers

  • @BRAMB0SSS
    @BRAMB0SSS 4 роки тому +7

    interesting! Strange how a 25% increase in draw weight gives only a 5% increase in speed. I expected the difference to be bigger.
    Do you have any idea why that might be?

    • @nachtschattenmacher
      @nachtschattenmacher 4 роки тому +4

      maybe the higher mass of the limb which must accelerate too?

    • @johnbloom1109
      @johnbloom1109 4 роки тому +11

      These heavy warbows operate like trucks. They can cast a very heavy arrow with not much loss in speed compared to shooting a lighter arrow. The same principle applies when driving a truck that is carrying a load vs a car that has no load yet the truck can't go much faster even if you unload it. The ELB's can shoot very heavy arrows very efficiently but they don't gain much in terms of arrow speed from shooting lighter arrows. Or at least that's how it appears to me.

    • @Reginaldesq
      @Reginaldesq 4 роки тому +1

      I'm not an expert. The 2 bows are made from different materials and I think that the speed with which the limb moves might be different. A bow with faster limbs but lower draw weight might be expected to release a faster arrow but might start to lose the speed advantage as the arrow gets heavier. Please feel free to correct me, I'm just guessing.

      @Jason Tsang He's talking about the exact same projectile fired from a different bow.

      Yes, those tropical hardwoods are much denser than yew. Makes an especially big difference in upper limb mass, where the energy storage is least critical and inertia most relevant.

    Can you pleae do a chronograph test of your 200lb bow, when you can do it. Also do you believe if there were 6ft5in warbow archers, could they get significantly more energy by drawing a 35 -36 in arrow at 200lb draw. My goal is to be able to shoot war bow weights.

    • @benn30ify
      @benn30ify 4 роки тому

      Unfortunately you will damage the bow faster if you use such a heavy arrow, it will exhaust the bow limbs.

    • @johnbarron4265
      @johnbarron4265 3 роки тому +3

      @@benn30ify Actually, it's the opposite. Using too light of an arrow can damage a bow. There is no danger of using heavier arrows, provided they have an adequate spine. In fact, as the arrow gets heavier, efficiency of the bow only increases, and kinetic energy transferred to the arrow only increases.

      According to English sources, Henry VIII (if i remember correctly) said that there was no man left in England who could shoot quarter pound arrows (113,5 grams), so according to that, we can presume that that is as high as English went with their arrow weights. When we look outside of Europe, the Manchurians used regularly 80 to 120+ gram arrows, also the japanese and indians had really heavy arrows, but i don't know exact weights. Some tribal hunters/warriors shoot up to 200 gram arrows that are over 50" long, and the heaviest i know of, is Korean iron arrow of around 230-240 grams, it was a special purpose arrow and required a special bow for it, quite similar to manchu bows, their normal war arrows were quite light, only around 32 grams.
      It would be very interesting to see those tested.
