    That hike back from Gorak Shep was nuts. I did Gorak Shep to Namche the first day and Namche to Lukla the second. No-one told me about the airport tax in Lukla so I ended up selling my Walkman for $5 in the terminal. It was worth losing the Walkman to get out of that nightmare airport.

    I did the trek from Lamosangu to Everest in 1974 (at age 24). Everything was very basic then but I don't remember any hassle at Lukla airport. Obviously traffic has grown hugely since then plus I went in March which may have been less busy. I did the trek again in 1980 by which time the road to Jiri had been built and the extra 4 days from Lamosangu wasn't required. It was primitive in 1974 - we only had a vague map with a dotted line between villages. We got lost in some canyon for 2 days with no food, we were attacked by dogs in another village and our camp was robbed overnight just past Lamjura pass. Perhaps the negatives are what makes something memorable. In 20 years time, you'll look back and laugh about Lukla airport.

    How much did the helicopter ride cost?

    • @1YearAroundTheWorld
      @1YearAroundTheWorld  5 років тому

      It was around $300 US, but I got a refund on the plane ticket which was about $150 US so at that time it was an extra $150 for me :)

    What are thinking it's adventure trekking route . If you think it's a luxury trip sorry it's not. So you have to prepare everything. If you can't stay your room.

      Ah I would actually disagree! Have you watched my travel vlog yet? In fact I found Everest base camp trek was actually quite luxurious compared to some of the treks I've done! A warm bed with blankets, beer, hot meals, you can even buy cans of pringles along the way! Given the huge amounts of tourists there one can expect a better managed airport which was my main let down.

    Did you have to pay for your Guide’s helicopter ticket or how does that work?

    • @1YearAroundTheWorld
      @1YearAroundTheWorld  6 років тому

      If you're guide is from kathmandu then part of your travel package will include your guides flight, however they get discounts so I believe his flight out was around $70 compared to my $150. I suppose you could just let your guide wait for the flight and take the helicopter yourself but I wanted him to have a helicopter experience so I also paid for his helicopter ticket, it was very unfortunate we couldn't take the same helicopter!

    Hi. I'm thinking of doing the EBC trek. What level of fitness do you think is necessary?

    • @1YearAroundTheWorld
      @1YearAroundTheWorld  4 роки тому +4

      I was entirely unfit when I started the trek and did 0 training, but I'm super stubborn and was determined to finish! I think a strong mind will help you more than a strong body.

    Would you recommend going to Lukla by flight and finish the trek in Jiri so that I’ll get the bus to Kathmandu? I have à flight back home from Kathmandu so I can’t take the risk of waiting haha. Tks for the useful video!!

    • @1YearAroundTheWorld
      @1YearAroundTheWorld  5 років тому

      For time management, I think that's a great idea! Maybe look into a more luxurious coach back however as the local buses are very very uncomfortable and often take much longer than expected, after walking so many days I'm sure you would like a relaxing bus back!

      Don't feel ashamed, this UA-camr is a city girl . She still thinks being in the middle of the mountains she can have same accommodation as in the city 🤣🤣

      The view is beautiful, the airport is not. Once you are checked in, you cannot see much of the view.

    We should not travel a developing country with developed country mentality (every thing will be well organized), I can feel your frustrations. Time management is not NEPALI thing. I think they should go for fixed time service or cancel it like any other part of world is practiced - not first come first basis.
    To me, I wish Hilary should not HAVE BUILT this airport that is dangerous (even killed Hillary's wife and daughter), weather susceptible under Nepali mis-management. In that case, tourist will even have spend more days trekking and spending more time in mountains. This will also reduce number of tourists to those who are really determined to get up there.

      That's a great point. I loved Nepal, and I also lived for 12 years in Cambodia. As a non-native you develop the local version of patience and life gets much easier. I also like your point about the walking. Sagarmatha is a holy mountain, and walking there from Jiri was a pilgrimage. I wept when I saw her up close. The longer you can spend in those glorious mountains the better your experience will be.
