The weird thing about RAM is that you can find slower kits at higher prices. Some people get tricked by that thinking that if it's more expensive, then it must have more performance.
while spending more on a gpu instead of ram is certainly the way to go on game-centric builds, "over-spending" on ram isn't a bad idea either because any memory that isn't used for running applications is used by your operating system as filesystem cache. what this means is that if you spring for a really big ram kit (say 96gb), and your game and whatever background apps you're running only needs 16 or maybe even 32gb of ram to operate, the "unused" portion of your memory is used as a dynamic filesystem cache so that any file read from your ssd (which is about 100x slower than your system ram) is kept stored in that section of ram so when it's needed again (say you re-load the level or game texture or any part of a game really), it will load it from ram (WAY FASTER) instead of your ssd. My desktop has had 128gb of ram in it for the past couple of generations (because I do a lot of graphics and av stuff, not just because I play games), but I do find that it actually boosts game loading speeds. - another trick i've found is that if I know i'm going to play a big game for hours at a time, I'll run a steam file integrity check (which loads all the game data into ram (as much as possible) before I start, and performance is wildly improved without resorting to something like a ram disk (which doesn't allow less frequently used items in cache to dynamically expire gracefully wasting memory). This is especially nice for games that have lots of loading screens but it's mostly loading in similar datasets (for me that's largely been stuff like starfield, borderlands 3, tiny tina's wonderland, and stuff like that that still features loading screens) - it reduces loading times dramatically.
@@PCBuilderChannel 1000% agree. I don't suggest buying (or buy myself) the extra ram until i've already maxed out my gpu (I'm running a 4090 in my box with all that ram)
I just love the intros: STOP BUYING BAD RAM! Jason, you're my go to guy for all things components, man. I have a couple other channels also, but they're not in that 1st place slot. I'm not quite ready for the Am5/DDR5 stuff yet, as the games I pay just don't require that much pull, and I'm totally content at 1440p, so I'm good. Ifenwhen I do decide to upgrade, I'll be coming back here first for the details to educate myself on the specs, and price to performance. Keep up the great work!
Same sticking to am4 + X3D glory still very strong I was able to justify buying an 4080 super on top of an 5700x3D and now I run everything max out no sweat I’m pretty sure I can go till pretty much am6 at this point 😂💯 coming from an 3600/2060S

Microcenter which usually has amazing deals on combos, has been pushing RAM combo upgrades for more going from the original 32 GB up to 48 GB, but the speed goes down from 6000 to 5200. I would use the combo builder to see if there are other discounted RAM sticks to swap in, as most of the combo discount actually comes from the CPU + Motherboard combination.
"We do expect some DDR5-6000 CL28 kits on the market in 2024, but I don't have any pricing or testing information" I do. If it's Trident Z Royal, the price will be a lot🙃
Hello! Great video. I'm trying to build my pc that has the b650e-e asus rog strix motherboard and the ryzen 7 7800x3d. I am between the corsair vengeance rgb cl30-36-36-76 and gskill trident z5 neo rgb cl30-38-38-96. Which one's a better option, because I don't really hear much about this comparison. Thank you!
Hi @pcbuilderchannel I bought a Ryzen 7 7800X3D, and also purchased the Corsair vengeance DDR5 6400 CL36 before I watched this video. I also have watched “how to build a PC 2024 guide” on TechSource, and at the 1:40:00 time stamp he enables XMP and then “under clocks the memory” by changing the system memory multiplier down from 6400 to 6300, and says to lower by 100 until the PC is stable… as you say this CPU struggles above 6000, would changing this setting to 6000 be optimal? Or do I need to purchase a different memory? I live in New Zealand, and rurally at that, so it might be a massive pain to try send this back in time, I know it’s my own fault for not watching your video first, It’s my first pc build 😅 hope to hear from you!
I recently upgraded to an i7 14700k and purchased a DDR4 z790 MSI mobo, since I already have 4x8gb DDR4 3200 CL16. Did I make a mistake by not purchasing a DDR5 mobo and buying 32gb of DDR5? For my GPU, I have an EVGA FTW3 RTX 3080 10gb.
My current PC is a mess of missmatched components: a 12700 with 32 GB of DDR4 RAM and a 4070. It was worse over a year ago. Before I bought my 4070 I was using a 6700XT that I bought for 700 EUR at the tail end of the GPU supply shortage. I had driver problems for half a year with that GPU because no drivers released between june 2022 and january of 2023 would work with that card, and then in the summer of 2023 it would overheat. RMA'd it to the store, store sent it to PowerColor, Powercolor refunded after 6 weeks, and then the store allowed me to put the entire 700 EUR return value towards a new GPU. This was in August 2023, so the 7700XT, 7800XT, 7900GRE and 40 Super series cards weren't available yet, so I went with a Gigabyte 4070 Gaming OC. Works good for now, but planning on upgrading my CPU to a 9800X3D when that releases, or a 7800X3D if the 9000 version turns out a dud as well. And then in 2026 the plan is to upgrade the GPU.
Hey PC Builder I have a question based on this 9:16 , I found here only 6000Mhz of 28CL or 36CL since than you had any experience with that ram ? cuz I'm a bit afraid to buy it and than eventually 28CL is not good for the pc the Ram I am talking about is g.skill Trident 5z Neo RGB 6000 28cl and 36CL my pc is R7 7800x3d RTX 4070 TI super mobo : Asus ROG STRIX B650-A
Good video. I still have a question, though. Is it alright to put higher speed RAM in a pre-built that's using a lower speed RAM? For example, my pre-built came with DDR5 5600. Is it alright to replace those with DDR 6000? Thanks!
Why are there different CL30 kits? On G.Skill's website they have a bunch of CL 30 RAM kits but the numbers after change like CL 30-38-38-96 and CL 30-39-39-102 and at lest 2 more CL 30-xx-xx-xx kits, after the first 30 do the other numbers matter??
Pc newbie here. I'd like to receive some advice of you guys about this build i'm planning. The build is: Mother board B65 Tomahawk Wifi, Ryzen 7 7700(from aliexpress, i'ts really cheap atm), RAM is Crucial Pro DDR5 RAM 32 GB Kit (2 x 16 GB) CL36 6000 MHz , GPU RX 6800, Crucial P3 Plus 1TB (NVMe M.2 SSD), PSU MSI MPG A750GF, Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE, the case is a montech AIR 903 MAX. Is it good just like that or should i change something? And i'm thinking i'll pair it with a 2k monitor.
Wait for other replies, as I'm no expert and just built my first PC 6ish months ago, but it looks good to me! That should be great for 2k gaming. I would like to say, as somebody who went with 2k as well, that 1080p will look worse than you're used to. It has to downscale and it isn't 1:1, so some videos, games and other media will basically require 2k res to look good. But it sounds like that build will handle it fine.
Yo Saul! Should I keep my 5 year old ram sticks(2x8gb 2666mhz cl22), for a brandnew 2x16gb cl16 3200mhz ram? My 2 main reasons are 1. My r5 5600 happen to bottleneck my rtx 4070 by a lot , and could really use the extra boost . 2. My brother happen to be building his first PC soon.Just thought I could help out somehow if I give my old rams to him. Sorry for my bad English btw lol. If no, then screw him.. Who gives a crap about him right?
Maybe I missed it, but I didn't hear anything about Intel's 12th gen (like the popular i5-12400F). I was just about to buy a G.Skill Flare X5 32GB DDR5 6000 with CL36 and to combine it with my RTX 3050. Is there something wrong in my decision? (Before it's too late! Lol!)

I only have 2 slots for ram on my motherboard. Should i buy two sticks 32GB total? Or buy one 32GB, so that i can easily upgrade in the future by just buying an identical stick? How much will it affect the performance?
Learned something new from this! I had no idea about the mega transfer thing with ram. The schools even teach it as MHz and the stores here list all rams as having MHz of like 6000 and such.
Depends on your CPU's io. I have 4x16gb ddr4 3600 cl16 on a 5800x3d. Some CPUs don't handle more than 2 sticks of ram efficiently, some do, it will be more of a question of how well your motherboard and CPU can use them.
@@mrdeath7187 the IMC on both of those CPUs are pretty similar. I had a gigabyte b450m ds3h paired with a 3700 with 2 and 4 sticks of 3200 mhz, and later put a 5600x in it with 2x 3600 dual rank, and even later put 4x 3600. Ddr4 isn't nearly as fussy as ddr5. AMD zen 3 (5xxx) series specifically had a better uplift from using all 4 slots in my experience, as I didn't notice much change between 2 and 4 3200mhz on the 3700

DDR5 6000 CL30 is good, I really like the G.Skill Ripjaws S5 kit that I bought for my 13600K so I'd recommend it (looks simple but clean and it's also on the cheaper end usually)

Depending on your GPU (if you have a really fast one) and your CPU, it might be slowing you down. The X3D Ryzen CPUs really don't care much about RAM speed due to the insane amount of cache they have, where Ryzen 7000 non X3D and Intel LGA 1700 unlocked CPUs really like the faster low latency stuff.
@jackali5014 I would look at comparisons if cl36 vs cl30 ram and if the upgrade is big enough for you then I would upgrade. I have cl30 ram and it is good in my 4090/ 7800x3d pc build.

My question inshort is Will 6000mhz xmp ram have any major impact on my cpu which can result in cpu broken or warranty voids ? Please answer so that i can use this pc peaceful without constant fear of breaking it 😅
It would be a minor difference. With zen 4 cpus, the ram speed doesn't matter that much, but the cas latency does a bit. I wouldn't bother spending 150-200 dollars for a new kit for a few fps here or there.

Can a 14700k (new, RMA'd for new one after old one, bios updated for intel degradation issues) and z790 (Asus TUF gaming) motherboard handle 4 sticks of 16gb 7200mhz/cl34? I ask because as far as I am aware, no one is making 7200mhz cl34 in 32gb sticks, except maybe teamgroup (which I've had issues with in the past) - I prefer G.Skill personally. and yes, I do need 64gb of ram, but I really don't want to sacrifice some FPS/performance going to 6400/cl32. I'm already on a 4090, with 32gb of DDR4 and maxing that out. I had 64gb DDR4/3600mhz, but two of my ram sticks died, so planning on moving this z690 and remaining 32gb of ram over to my sons desktop.

Unlikely, unless you are comfortable lowering them down to 6000 and manually tightening the timings. People have tested 8000 on Ryzen 9xxx CPUs but sweet spot seems to be 6000
Regarding not going above 6000Mhz, I saw a review by KitGuru on the X870E Carbon Wifi and there was actually a (small) benefit of using 8000Mhz. Are the extra few FPS worth the extra cost of the fancy DDR5? I don't know, but it's something to note.

Faster RAM doesn't increase FPS. Same for your SSD. A Gen 3 will load only a few seconds slower than a Gen 4 or 5. Faster RAM and SSDs benefit video editing and other non-gaming workloads. Spend your money wisely, Grasshoppa ✌️😎
Upgraded my ram like you told me to. No crashes after 7hours of gaming. But my cinebench scores somehow decreased. From 10,500 multiC score in cinebench ,now it's around 10,000.. To clarify I used to have a 2x8gb 2666mhz cl20 , now 4x8gb 3600mhz cl18. Docp/xmp is enabled + power plan setting is at maximum. CpuZ, taskmanager, hwinfo shows that everything regarding rams are properly set. Is it completely normal to have lower cinebench score than before or something is wrong with my pc?
Cinebench typically is not RAM speed dependent. Not sure why your score went down, but it is a tiny bit and Cinebench scores fluctuate by about that much. I honestly wouldn't worry about it. You've likely picked up quite a bit of performance in other tasks like gaming and desktop programs.

Not the best option no. But the performance difference isn't that much, especially with most midrange GPUs. If you ever want to upgrade though RAM is pretty easy to switch out at least

Hello Jason, can you comment on dual rank vs single rank RAM? Should we care about it? I know the Teamgroup RAM you like to recommend is single rank so I assume you don’t think it’s worth worrying about.
Depends on the CPU. For Ryzen 7600, 5600, or i5 12400 or 13400 class CPUs I'd go with a budget tower air cooler and clearance should not be an issue. Even for midrange air coolers (dual tower) it is rarely an issue. It is really just the ultra low profile Mini ITX coolers that I'd worry about.

while spending more on a gpu instead of ram is certainly the way to go on game-centric builds, "over-spending" on ram isn't a bad idea either because any memory that isn't used for running applications is used by your operating system as filesystem cache. what this means is that if you spring for a really big ram kit (say 96gb), and your game and whatever background apps you're running only needs 16 or maybe even 32gb of ram to operate, the "unused" portion of your memory is used as a dynamic filesystem cache so that any file read from your ssd (which is about 100x slower than your system ram) is kept stored in that section of ram so when it's needed again (say you re-load the level or game texture or any part of a game really), it will load it from ram (WAY FASTER) instead of your ssd.
As long as it doesn't cost you the proper GPU or CPU. We see that happen all the time in our Boost My Build series
@@PCBuilderChannel 1000% agree. I don't suggest buying (or buy myself) the extra ram until i've already maxed out my gpu (I'm running a 4090 in my box with all that ram)

Microcenter which usually has amazing deals on combos, has been pushing RAM combo upgrades for more going from the original 32 GB up to 48 GB, but the speed goes down from 6000 to 5200.

Sounds like a plan!

Yep although your type of prebuilt will affect this. See our "how to upgrade your pc 2024" video

Is it good just like that or should i change something? And i'm thinking i'll pair it with a 2k monitor.
Wait for other replies, as I'm no expert and just built my first PC 6ish months ago, but it looks good to me! That should be great for 2k gaming. I would like to say, as somebody who went with 2k as well, that 1080p will look worse than you're used to. It has to downscale and it isn't 1:1, so some videos, games and other media will basically require 2k res to look good. But it sounds like that build will handle it fine.
That looks fine to me, though Jason recommends 6000 CL30 for RAM.

Depends on your CPU's io. I have 4x16gb ddr4 3600 cl16 on a 5800x3d. Some CPUs don't handle more than 2 sticks of ram efficiently, some do, it will be more of a question of how well your motherboard and CPU can use them.
@@Haydenh127 what about r5 3600 and 5600 with b450m
@@mrdeath7187 the IMC on both of those CPUs are pretty similar. I had a gigabyte b450m ds3h paired with a 3700 with 2 and 4 sticks of 3200 mhz, and later put a 5600x in it with 2x 3600 dual rank, and even later put 4x 3600. Ddr4 isn't nearly as fussy as ddr5.

BECAUSE MAYBE THE GPU WILL FOLLOW 6MONTHS.. FOR THE MEANTIME THIS APU BUILD ONLY..
I see you've written more here. Truly I don't recommend this, adding a GPU later to this APU is not a good combo. You'd be much better off going for a more budget GPU/CPU Combo now. It will give you better performance now and a better upgrade path in the future. See our latest Best Builds video for a great 5600 build guide for example
@@PCBuilderChannel thank you so much now my final CPU is the Ryzen 5 5600, I'm planning to build a budget pc with a 5600 that can handle 1440p gaming.. what do you recommend GPU for this.. also is the Ram matters specially the ram 3200 cl16 with AMD Expo. Feature? Is this kind of ram is recommend to have a good performance in gaming using 5600?.
You’ve helped me so much with each of these videos.
You teach everything needed to know *and* give product recommendations, you’re one of the goats.
Thank you so much! Love to hear how much they've helped you. And thank you for tuning in! :)
Thanks for this, most illuminating!
So glad its helpful! Thanks for watching
Is it safe to use RAM that isn't listed in the motherboard's list of compatible memory?
At this point I wouldn't worry about the QVL lists on existing platforms anymore. That is why I decided to remove it from this year's video. If you are building with the new Arrow Lake Intel CPU that launches later this year, then I'd look at it otherwise AM5 and LGA1700 platforms have largely solved RAM compatibility.
If budget isn't constrained by a gpu upgrade, should you still prioritize ddr5 cl 30 6000 fastest timings possible when comparing sticks?
For Ryzen 7000 and 9000 yes. Put your extra money into the best possible GPU/CPU Combo, more SSD storage, or just more RAM
@@PCBuilderChannel I'll be more specific. I'm going to get a 7800x3d and ive heard it's less sensitive to ram speed or timings? if 2 sticks have the same cl30 6k but one has 30-38-38-96 and one has 30-36-36-76 i assume the lower timings is the correct thing to buy?
Edit: My other comment got eaten i guess cause I posted a link. I found some ram by Gskill F5-6000J2836G16GX2-TR5NG that has 6000MT and cl28. I presume this is the best(or really freakin good) ram atm for the new ryzen chips?
@ShadowofProvidence yes the cl28 is the best.
Ok so... I made a bad decision going for a 32 ram kit (2x16) 6400 and CL 32 for my 7600x?
Not the best option no. But the performance difference isn't that much, especially with most midrange GPUs. If you ever want to upgrade though RAM is pretty easy to switch out at least
@@PCBuilderChannel The GPU that I am looking for is a 7800 xt rn. I got them recently so I think I can just give them back.
You can mix sticks and kits as long as you know hwat you are doing. You can use 3 Stick and get the same high performance if you sue 16GB with 2x8 sticks in channel A and 16GB on one stick in channel B with different brands but THE SAME SPECS it´s exactly the same perforamnce. Those stickers on the RAM sticks do not change their physical properties.
I got a new pc, ryzen 7 5600, Asus TUF gaming B650 plus mobo and Corsair Vengeance 6000mhz ram... I cant manage to work it in 6000mhz, just 4800 because of stability problems, ive changed the mobo and ram already and nothing changes... Activating AMD Expo makes the booting time around 3/4 minutes... Drivers all to date... Any help?
I have that same problem so I left everything stock and I also get 4800mhz but I am fine with that since I have a high end build.
@@MrAnimescrazy i guess but we are paying for something that isn't working... Imagine buying a 4090 and working as a 4080 ...
@@MrAnimescrazy i guess but we are paying for something that isn't working... Imagine buying a 4090 and working as a 4080 ...
@bricegonzalez3497 you must have 4 sticks like me? I am willing to make that sacrifice because I would guess I am not missing out on that much fps and I play on my lg c1 65 inch oled tv so I limit the fps to 120 but I can of course get a lot more frames.
@@MrAnimescrazy Nope, just 2 sticks, I tried to go up to 5600mhz and same thing, booting time up to 3 min... Yellow LED on RAM for a while snd then it turns on...
I bought ddr5 6000(mt) cl 38 😞😞 is that good for budget range,
I bought ryzen 5 7600,
Mobo. Gigabyte b650 aorus elite ax v2,
1 TB gen 5 m.2 nvme.
Msi mag 750w psu
I would return it if you can and go 6000 CL 30
@@PCBuilderChannel Yes, I also thought of returning it but I checked the latency of CL30, CL34, 36 and 38 on the CL calculator, there is not much difference between CL 30 and 38. When I checked, I found that CL 16 and 18 have good latency for gaming. And right now my budget is low, so I have bought 16 GB RAM and I will update my RAM in the future. So maybe I will buy CL 16 RAM and keep this CL 38 RAM for emergency. Is this idea correct, and please give your suggestion because I am new in PC industry. And THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT ❤️
I bought Gskill 6600 kit/64 gig kit thinking " this was gonna be the best" and it was a trainwreck , it gave me nothing the grief , booting issues/posting issues and really bad lagging issues all round and not just gaming even when doing stuff work related and it fn horrible, i switch to GEil at 6000/64gig and it was problem solved.
I know you lost the 1:1 by going over 6000, but if I can get a 7600 kit for the same price as 6000 is it worth doing? CAS goes from 30 to 36. Not sure which way to go here.
No! The best performance is what we recommend
Klevv Cras V DDR5 6000Mhz CL30 any good?
Yes it should be look up reviews.
Hello Jason, can you comment on dual rank vs single rank RAM? Should we care about it? I know the Teamgroup RAM you like to recommend is single rank so I assume you don’t think it’s worth worrying about.
What air cooler do u recommend with high enough clearance for rgb ram?
Depends on the CPU. For Ryzen 7600, 5600, or i5 12400 or 13400 class CPUs I'd go with a budget tower air cooler and clearance should not be an issue. Even for midrange air coolers (dual tower) it is rarely an issue. It is really just the ultra low profile Mini ITX coolers that I'd worry about.
Your looking well and fit Jason 💪
Let’s jump into it!
With that! Let's jump into it (;
I think I got the perfect ones for me :P
G.Skill Trident Z5 Royal Neo RGB DDR5-6000 - 32GB - CL28
in combination with:
AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D
ASUS ROG STRIX B650E-I GAMING WIFI
Kingston FURY Renegade SSD - 4TB
It looks like a great kit and I'm excited to test it, but quite pricey at $165 in the US right now. But if you've already maxed out other things, not a bad place to invest.
For AMD AM4 3200 CL16 or 3600 CL16/18. For AMD AM5 6000 CL30 or 6400 CL32.
Does activating XMP or EXPO reduce the lifespan of the RAM? Why dont they just factory overclock it if it doesnt?
Not at all.
@@PCBuilderChannel okay thanks a lot for the reply!
got Lexar Ares RGB 32 GB DDR5-6400 CL32 for stupid cheap ( way cheaper than anything 6000/30) but for AMD... bad?
mobo is Asus TUF GAMING B650-E WIFI ( you got it, got it for cheap too, like 120$ :)
You can try manually tuning for this one to see if you can get the CPU controller to run it at 3200. There are videos for this on youtube.
Hello, my pc amd ryzen 7 7800x3d rtx 4070 ti super 32g ram 6000 30cl.
Is it a good idea to go up to 6400 30cl 32 × 2
I wouldn't no
@@PCBuilderChannel thank you 😊
Question. On the T Force ARGB ram, can I turn the RGB lights off?
If you want RAM without RAM get a Non-RGB kit like the G.Skill Flare.
Unless you already have the T-Force in which case I don't know.
Should i get a liquid freezer III or a LS720? (both 360mm)
Either is fine so get whichever is cheaper.
If you're in the US, get the liquid freezer III because deepcool is banned and can't support warranties
