About half the barrels I drill, and the other half I don't. Whenever I see somebody get SO worked up about drilled barrels I am tempted to re-fill my drilled barrels. What bothers me is when people think they can dictate as to how another is supposed to enjoy the hobby. We all have different aspects of the hobby that we have varying degrees of passion for.. I don't care how well you've painted or built your models, let's just play the game, and have a good time. There's a whole world of shit to get angry about, we're using the hobby to get away from that

True true. Also, once you've spent your £40, why would anyone disrespect that investment and avoid spending the 10 minutes it takes to drill barrels? I'm a crap painter, so drilling the barrels is probably the single biggest improvement I can make to any model :)

I came across this video while I was looking at a video to learn how to drill the barrels - I've not done it before but decided I'd like to for my new army as I'm getting back into the Hobby. I clicked on this because I thought there might be an argument against it, and there is no reason I can see not to but wow was this surprisingly intense as an opinion video on a plastic soldier. I love the game, and I will do the drilling but I can't imagine getting so worked up about it.

This video convinced me not to drill me barrels, not because I don't think it looks good (I do), and not because I can't be arsed (I can), but because I would rather throw myself off a building than risk having other people think that I agree with this guy.

If someone wants to drill they drill. If someone doesn't want to drill, they don't.
Really not drilling barrels doesn't necessarily mean lazy hobbyist (anyways who cares, it's their choice how they enjoy their hobby). Someone may be just batch-painting or want to get through their pile of shame.
Now for competition display-level pieces, that's a different matter. Unless you are amazing at painting holes, and even then the time could be better spent on other stuff.

honestly : do what ever the fuck you want with your plastic.
If doing the basics is good enough for you and you are happy with that. That is fantastic. Keep on going.
If you want something more special with more detail - drill em out. Doesn't take long and adds a noticibly detail that makes you made up space soldier more beliveable and grounded in this world and physics.
I take offence to something else though. In that article they say that you can just build em , dunk em in wash and be done or however they say that. Ok.
Do that and try to enter an official tournament or even just try to game at a GW store with a Manager that actually follows the rules. Good luck.

Controversial opinion, i don't think it does matter. Do the details that make you feel good about the mini, if that includes drilling the barrels go for it but saying others should do it is a bit ridiculous. I get what you are saying, take some pride in your work but ultimately the tabletop isn't the golden demon qualifier, the shortcuts are good enough to have a nice looking army to play warhammer with.

Also you should know Primaris Players wouldn't like your opinion. For them the hobby has been conditioned by UA-camrs to be low effort speed painting. Even to then point they scrape details from unconverted models so they paint easier. Btw no offense, do your stuff primaris players, I just dont like the low effort aesthetic.

  • @Frostwolf223

    Couple of things:
First, if you hang up a blanket or something behind you, you don't need to censor the whole room and then mask yourself out so you can be seen. Might save you some effort.
Second, dude, chill out. They are TOYS. Not everyone who plays Warhammer or collects the models has any ambition to win painting competitions. Like, I personally feel like my own models are incomplete if I don't drill the barrels, but that is my personal choice. I'm not going to get all bent out of shape if somebody suggests that drilling barrels isn't necessary, because it fucking isn't.
This is a hobby. A way to pass time, a way to have fun. In the likely event somebody thinks drilling barrels isn't fun, the what the hell ever, man. It literally doesn't matter. They have every right to do their hobby in whatever way they think is the most fun, and you have no right to say they're wrong for it. Shame on you. There is NO objectively correct way to have fun, and if you are willing to argue otherwise, then maybe you should work on growing up a bit before plastering your opinion across the internet and making an absolute fool of yourself.

Most of the time drill, sometimes I can't be arsed. My favourite way to start the drill hole is with a hot pin. However, I recently found one of my old lead Ork spleen rippa epic scale models from what..... 30 plus years ago. Guess what, painted barrel hole :) I probably didn't have a pin drill back then, plus it was metal and hot pins don't work on metal.

With large groups of models, no way am i drilling all of those barrels. Captains, leaders, characters etc, yeah, of course. THOSE are gonna get looked at and picked up. I've never seen anyone pick up a random trooper off the table, they always want a look at the commander and special characters. And keep in mind, i have indeed won painting competitions, so I'm saying this from the perspective of someone who takes a lot of pride in their work.
As far as im concerned, considering how expensive GW models are, if they aren't giving me those holes in production, why should i HAVE to do it? Why should i be required to do the work GW is too lazy to do in production every single model? You know full well they CAN do it. Hell, i have a 3D printer and i can print models with hollow gun barrels that don't need any drilling. If i can do that on my home printer, what exactly is GW's excuse? Nah, i drill barrels when i think it's important, but not on every single model in an army. If GW can't be bothered, then it's up to me if i can be bothered too

    • @ieatstheinternet
      @ieatstheinternet 3 місяці тому

It takes a few mins you lazy git.. Don't say you take pride in your work if you can't be bothered to do the basics. Sure you don't gotta do nothing... but if you not doing basic stuff people are free to pass judgement on your unfinished army, because thats what it is. And they may not say it to be polite, but trust me, season hobbyist sure as hell are thinking it. Its even worse when its some like you who knows how and can't be bothered. Least kids and new people have the excuse of not knowing how or being intimidated by it.
