To Daniel Can you do a little video sharing who you are and a bit about you, ive watched you, this channel and the whiskey tribe for about a year but honestly don't know who you are. I really enjoy everything you do here and would like possibly an updated video about yourself for newer followers. I just watched your nickel 8yr video and wanted some more insight about you!
When the 17yo originally came out just before 2000 it was okay, it was the '77 that came out just a couple years later that knocked my socks off! Cheers!
Loved this - would also like to see a comparison (especially among craft distilleries) of fanciful *stories* used to sell a bottle and their legitimacy (i.e. the difference between the Van WInkle line's 'we strive to make good bourbon sometimes at a loss...etc VS "this mashbill was found in a lock box burried deep under ground and we're reviving it because yadda yadda yadda - meanwhile its just MGP)
Another great video!!! Do you see American Single Malt as a category getting certain designations on where they are from? Like for instance Scotland can fit inside the entire state of Virginia and they have several regions and labels. How will the US handle a Texas whiskey vs lets say mid west etc?
I'm willing to pay for matching Ardbeg tattoos when I come back for level 3, That should help cover the cost and pain & suffering for the Crown Royal Single Malt, Sincerely Mike Russo.
Hard pass on the 17 for me. I love Ardbeg typically but they also chillfiltered the 17 to go with that weak ABV. And at that price? No thanks. I’ll gladly buy a bottle of Uigeadail and Corryvreckan at that price and enjoy it 1000x more Now if you said it was 46+%ABV , non-chillfiltered and $250 or under I would have went for two.
That was truly interesting, at the end of the day if you enjoy a whiskey age statements or a fanciful title are pretty much irrelevant. Also, and not sure if this is the right place for it but here goes. Have you ever considered taking one of the bottles from the vault, and tracing it back to its origins from a tasting perspective? Let me give an example as it is a bit difficult for me to explain, let’s say a whiskey was made using an English ale, distilled and stored in an ex-sherry cask. You would take the original bottle of sherry and ale and taste them in a linear fashion along with the end whiskey produced to share observations if any of the characters are visible or present in the whiskey. Understanding whiskey makers can be quite secretive about these things, you might get the closest approximation based on general information available or some such, again would be quire fascinating to see . Cheers.
DEAR DANIEL, (DEAR ABBY reference) I have always felt that A/B/C comparisons of Lagavulin 16, Ardbeg 10 and Laphroaig 10 are unfair. Likewise Lagavulin 16, Ardbeg Uigeadail, and Laphroaig Lore don't hit the mark. Ardbeg 17 and Laphroaig 17 along with Lagavulin16 seem a better A/B/C comparison, but I haven't come across this in a video review. Please consider! Cheers. 😊
So now that there are regs for single malt, how is the transition handled? What about bottles already on shelves that don't meet it. I used to work at a "big coffee company" and learned a lot about CPG packaging. I think most people don't realize in the supermarket what words have rules and what are fanciful.
Most labels are already compliant. The few that won't will be people who call it "single malt" but are using other grains. But usually TTB lets people phase out existing stock on things like this.
A question I have concerning the fanciful titles containing “single malt” like your Balcones example is do their labels get grandfathered in, or do all these labels now need to be updated in order to comply with TTB regulations?
I think I heard Scotland is going to stop making 750ml bottles for the US. My recent bottle of Springbank 10 is a 700 ml bottle. I’m trying to find a place I can try some Islay whiskies. I’m a bit reluctant to just drop the money on some without knowing if I like it. I feel like I’d like the bbq smoke style but not so much the ashy ones.
I'm with Roy Aqvavitae on this one....pity and shameful release considering its original history , which talks volumes about Ardbeg as a distillery. However, if people enjoy what's in the bottle, good for them.🥃🥃
I love Ardbeg very much, but them labeling their product as the "ultimate" Islay scotch is a bit pretentious. IMO it's unnecessary, their whisky speaks for itself (I do think that it's the number one whisky if what you're looking for is smokiness).

My love for Ardbeg started with recommendations from you! Now Uigeadail is my go-to Islay scotch.
That is interesting, I never once thought of American Single Malt as a fanciful title. Love that.
Thank you for another great and nerdy conversation

Daniel, just sat thru the whole video. Boy, do I have a treat for you on Saturday!
Sweet!

This does explain the different font on the bottle...
Ardbeg is definitely my favorite distillery.
Welcome all Whiskey Vaulters to Fanciful Titles (Nerdy Marketing) Story Time with Daniel!
They are the best. Daniel is a fantastic wordsmith.
7:41 whenever you use music or audio terms to describe a whiskey I feel like I’m tracking right with you 😂
Thank you for introducing us to Ardbeg. I’m stupid and cook with expensive booze. Spare a few shots of Ardbeg for your BBQ sauce.
Rye whiskey in Jagersaune works too.
Cheers 🥃

Hi. Do you think the 17 should have at least been 46 vol. Especially at its price point. Found the topic on labelling very interesting 👍

Love Ardbeg too, I am also overwhelmed with all the special releases, is the 17 a must try? Slàinte!
Meh
@@WhiskeyVault thanks so much! it is really helpful specially when you're trying to decide how to spend your budget

Good day! Co-lab with the unsubscribe podcast cast? I promise this jargon will be loved and something with hand selected barrels?
The old 17 is SOOOO much better!
A question I have concerning the fanciful titles containing “single malt” like your Balcones example is do their labels get grandfathered in, or do all these labels now need to be updated in order to comply with TTB regulations?
They already comply

Can you post a link to that graphic?
how about this? www.ttb.gov/ds-labeling-home/anatomy-of-a-distilled-spirits-label-tool
Thank you for the video 🥃 I like Ardbeg
MMMM!!! Ardbeg!
ARDBEGGGGG!

Agreed.
Speaking of misleading labels, my biggest irritation was with Proper 12 Irish, which had nothing to do with its age. 😡
I think the problem with Jack Daniels is it doesn't even say "No. 7", it says "Old No. 7", which is even more misleading.
516👍

Honestly i disagree with the last bit. While i havent had Ardbeg in a while, I generally believe Laphroaig is a tad smokier
It is impossible to avoid misleading idiots!
Compared that 17 with the original and they aren't much alike. Nice enough but the original is way fruitier and a lot less peat.
It was 40% so you added water and it probably became less than 40%, so technically you didn't drink whisky 😊😂
So I was watching some bullshit on politics and drinking wine... thinking wtf is whiskey vault doing? (switched back to whiskey)
