Putting is my favourite part of the game. My average over my last 400+ rounds is 30. Last year or so most games I am 26-30 per 18. Have a 3 putt every 2-5 games. Been rocking an Odyssey Versa 2 ball from 2012 with jumbo grip. Just got in my hand a Tommy Armour Impact 3 mallet with oversized grip. First putter change in over 7 years. First round out started a bit off then started getting the feel and had a bunch of 1 & 2 putts. Shouldn't take long to get right, still using the same putting style
I've always had the belief that if you concentrate on your putting you can use any putter. If you align it right and get used to the speed of the greens you'll find it's always consistent. That being said some prefer a lightweight one they can feel the stroke with and some prefer a heavy putter where they can just get a rhythm going. That being said I've never played well enough to get an expensive putter 🤣😂
I shoot around par and wouldn't be too put off with a putter like that! Looks are just as important as the material because putting is a confidence game!
This is such a personal issue. All down to how the putter feels to the individual. I have had many different ones over the years, from cheap to expensive. My current putter is a cheap one from Decathlon. It feels great to me and I’m rolling them in more often than I have for years.
I have owned a range of expensive putters and cheap putters. Incl : Ping Redwood Scotty Cameron Circa 62 Scotty Newport Tommy Armour Custom fitted broomstick Ping Zing 2 Ping Zing 1 The best Putter I have ever had HANDS DOWN, which I still use which is UNFREAKEN BELIEVABLE....... Ping Sigma 2 Wolverine H....... Get it now...... You will not be disappointed..... And please then do a review on it..... It looks like a weapon.... Because it is.
I guess things like SAM PuttLab or iPING would be the most accurate when comparing numbers based performance. Obviously just like drivers and irons, feel and looks play a part in the players decision.
30putts in a round doesn't tell me anything! I don't like counting putts without knowing the distance to the hole... Example 27putts a round... Two scenarios... First: every approach shot lands 10m from the hole. Second: every approach shot lands 1,5m from the hole (maybe he missed every green and is a good chipper) On the first example I would say he is an exceptional putter on the second well not so good. Both 27putts... Always important to know the distance... My golf bag got stolen and since then I play with my old cheap putter I could find in my garage... Works perfect although my playing partners complain that it looks horrible next to my old school Ben Hogan medaillion irons... I still like it ... Have a nice day
That putter is on AliExpress for £13 with free shipping! So even cheaper 😂😂 When I lived in China I couldn’t play golf but the school I taught at had golf cages so I bought a PGM 7 iron and it scratched my golfing itch, I miss that 7 iron!
If you have access to one the Quintic Putting Monitor is pretty awesome, failing that PING has an App that can be used in conjunction with your smartphone.
@@SASGolf 👍 if you fancy a trip over to Toronto I know that Ian Fraser has one at TXG and I would love to see a course vlog of you and Matt Blois bombing drives 🏌️♂️💥⛳
2:30am here in the Philippines and I'm a little drunk I drank 5ltrs 🍺so maybe I shouldn't be commenting but give me the honma set 😂😂😂😂😂 a little off topic I remember your friend N L S GOLF you need vlogs with him because the real Simon comes out with other you are too kind. We need the banter from 7iron only challenge and 2nd hand club challenge. Wow drunk and old still good memory LMAO
When it comes to testing a putter surely you could test things like CoG, and does it twist when hit off centre. Where do off centre hits go? Does the ball roll well off the face? What is the angle of the putter head? So many things can quantify the quality from a measurable aspect. Of course once you get through all that stuff putters are all about feel. I've used a 2 ball for 10 years, whereas my wife goes the other end of the scale with her Ping Anser. On your comment on PGA putting stats - do these numbers take into consideration that maybe the pros are hitting the ball closer to the pin these days? Personally I think the biggest problem with putting is reading the green. If you can't read a green it doesn't matter what you've got in your hands - you're screwed!
What ping putter do you use Simon? I bought a sigma 2 tynee in new condition for £90. Its taking some getting used to as my old one was a Malibu from before i was born and the sigma face is so soft in comparison!
Forgive me for picking a nit, but I can't believe you really just said you'd never change your putting stroke! Nearly every pro on tour makes adjustments to their stroke over the years; I recently saw an interview with Bernhard Langer where he discussed all the different grips and strokes he's used. He's in the Hall fo Fame.
The best putter use the same kinda technique though. Look at Jack, Tiger, Furyk, Zach Johnson. All used similar putters and technique. They may have switched it up a bit but always around the same stuff. Tigers evens back to trusty Scotty.
Surely the only tests for a putter is it's alignment and whether or not it stays aligned during the act of hitting the ball and it's loft?. If the face is square when gripping the putter in the correct place and the head doesn't somehow get out of alignment (being loose or flexing) when you hit the ball and it doesn't have the loft of a pitching wedge ;-) then a blind man would be happy to see it.
Honeymoon period is most noticeable in golf new driver bombing new irons hitting greens left right and centre for a month at the most then it's back to the bullshit....I'm glad I experienced this in golf before I'll ever get married soften the blow
For a test perhaps you could slam it into a water melon? I don’t know what it would achieve but it’d be sure fun to watch... I suppose being serious now you could gather 5/6 really good players and blindfold them and have them hit a ball to judge the feel against a similar more expensive putter from the shop, be interesting to see if they can feel the difference.... but I still think the watermelon test would be a big win... do it outside though 👍🏻
Twp players with identical size and shape will like two different putters. One man may be a tad stringer, and prefers one a few oz. heavier than the other man. For me, its feel, consistent distance control and being able to hit it straight. I tried a Scotty with the softer metal face insert, and I hated it. It was TOO soft. My ping ios much more consistent for ME. The now FAMED Spider putter, I cannot hit consistently to save my life, but many tour player love them to death. For me, they are the worst putter i have ever hit. Most payers use a putter that is TOO long. I like my eyes right over the ball, and not looking at it from behind, so my putter shaft runs from 32-33". Remember back how Jack putted. He crouched down over the ball with his eyes directly over the ball. You need to see that line form on top of it, not from behind it. But back to the original topic, each p0layer will like a different putter. Never go on what the pro's use. Find one YOU hit well and CONSISTENT.
How heavy is this putter (grams). I nearly bought this putter 10 times but was afraid it was too light since I like a rock as far as weight is concerned....Like the way your vids are going ( For us budget orientated folks)
To be honest the answer is no I haven't wondered about the cheapest ever putter. And I would suggest and anyone watching your videos aren't either nor searching for the cheapest putter on UA-cam. Cause if you after the cheapest you probably won't d dedicating any time on research. Reviews are only ever on top, top end or the rick bottom. Nothing in between that an average golfer cares about
You cannot test a putter unless you use a robot to do the putting. You can't test any golf club without a robot because no golfer swings the exact same way every time. Even with a robot you have no human "feel" involved so what's the point of a test? I say that if a putter looks good to you and it actually lowers your total number of putts....that's a good putter.....for you and maybe only you. Who knows? At least you didn't spend $500 to find out the same thing.
Please. Buy the taylormade m4 that is advertised on wish
I believe this will hold true with almost all the clubs. If you swing is sound you will get a better result
You have been robbed mate there's slazengers putters in sports direct for a tenner😁
Ian rushes Left foot 🏃♂️ I’m off there now then 😉
Was about to say the same. Dunlop and slavenger for a tenner or less 😂

I play a $45 dollar pinemeadow mallet putter and the only reason it was that much is because of the grip. Feels amazing off the face.

The test is to do it blindfolded! You’re then purely basing the result of feel, regardless of putts being holed!
To test a putter, can you not get some readings from a SAM system to show how well your stroke performs with each putter ?
Wise words, Simon.

Great video Simon, very sensible advice again.
I think one thing that makes putter better is good alignment aids.
Wayne Trinier alignment is key 🔥

3 putt 3 times per round lately seriously starting to consider using a long iron instead if it drops its good doesn't matter what you use
It’s all in your head. Go to the practice green and do some drills. Putt one handed. Try stuff and you will work it out.
Thanks for doing this one!

Love your videos
I bought a rio and the shaft felt like it was not solid when i made contact and the ball did not travel as far as it should
You test it on a mat to see if it skids or rolls
Maybe you can do a blindfolded test with this one and an expensive putter. I am sure Greg wouldn't mind to help you ;)

A set of irons
