The Best Full Frame Sony Lens for Video AND Photo - The 35mm F1.8

  • The 35mm f1.8 is overall my favourite lens for the Sony full frame E-mount. It is sharp, fast, and a perfect focal length for video with virtually no focus breathing.

    At first I didn't like Sony's tiny bodies but now that they're coming out with those small primes like the 24, 40, and 50 I really like the idea of travelling light.

    I use an a5100 -- I like my 23mm lens -- it's just about same as a 35mm on a full frame. It's a good focal length for either ... also rides a gimbal well. Good show

Because I heard that the video is better than the NEX 7 kit lens & I can’t afford to buy the 35mm F1.8 lens right now & if I’m on a budget I have to cut it

    Definately the pick for video from the Sony line-up. Spot on that it is well overdue to have some tiny lenses to go with our tiny and arthritis inducing full frame Sony bodies. I'm much more cheap skate and went with the Samyang 35mm f/1.8 tiny prime at half the price which is only 210g and actually has less lens aberrations into the corners of the frame. Believe there is also a Viltrox offering now, though not sure who is buying that as it is more expensive than the Rokinyang as well as being the heaviest with the worst close focusing distance. Man I can't wait for the GH6 to get here so I can spiral into regret at selling all my M43 gear for E-Mount...

    • @MarkBennettCameraCrisis
      @MarkBennettCameraCrisis  3 роки тому

      Haha. That GH6 will be expensive - so I doubt you’ll regret the switch. I have two systems right now and it’s chaos. But right now I’m using both a lot. When that GH6 comes out I’ll have to make some serious decisions!!

    I love this lens for all the reasons that you stated. It's just such a nice lens to use. I only wish the filter size were bigger because I like to use variable NDs for video and I need crazy stepping rings to get to 77mm filter diameter. Also, would love for it to have an aperture ring like the G and GM lenses. Oh well, nothing's perfect

    I was confused a bit - I thought it's the SEL35F18, but it's the SEL35F18F, right? The first one has OSS, but does not have the MF/AF switch and the button. Do you have any thoughts on the first one (with OSS / without buttons)? Image quality wise, build quality wise, etc? I guess the one with buttons is better, but I'm not sure!

    I’m thinking of the 35mm. I bought my first full frame and nervous about the weight. Also considering Sigma 24-70 2.8 but seems too chunky. Someone listed a Sony A74 for $790. Must be a scam but they put the shyer count and many pictures. Will be interesting if I actually receive it

      Yeah you've definitely been scammed, a lot of them put it for sale cheaply, get the money and by the time PayPal, eBay or credit card company get contacted the money is already withdrawn and non refundable. Popular scam on Facebook and eBay as well. Hopefully you paid with credit card and you can do a charge back with them. 💳

    Drooling for the 35 1.8 + 85 1.8 combo for my A7c (dreamy compact setup)... but I am torn between that or a standard 2.8 zoom, convenience vs delicious bokeh.. tough one! Also, subscribed!

    • @MarkBennettCameraCrisis
      @MarkBennettCameraCrisis  3 роки тому +1

      I have the Tamron 28-75 2.8 and I will be reviewing it as well. It's true - the convenience of the zoom is a draw. I fint I use the primes more on a daily basis. So small and light and such great bokeh. But there are times I just can't do without that zoom!!

      @@MarkBennettCameraCrisis Exactly what I've been considering! The tammy 28-75 is on sale here in Sweden right now so I've been sooo close to pulling the trigger... I've already got the 17-28 so it would be a great addition to the camera bag.

    • @MarkBennettCameraCrisis

      @@mattiasalmqvist2242 spoiler alert for my review - it’s a great lens worth the price. But I am not a big fan of carrying around a zoom all day for casual shoots. If you like the 17-28 - you’ll like the 28-75 for sure. Great length for video at the wide end and portrait at the long end and everything in between. It’s all about your personal style. I find I lean toward primes. But I know lots of people (especially the pros) who lean on the 2.8 24-70 (or 28-75).

    I’m more of a zoom lens kinda guy to be able to quickly film most especially in a run and gun situation. This lens is for sure helpful for those other shooting applications and if you want to be more discreet just like you mentioned. If I’ll have a full frame sony camera in the future, I’ll definitely consider this one paired with other zoom lenses with constant aperture for wedding work. It’s just that this time can’t justify the purchase for both lens and camera. Haha… Also since the GH6 was just announced. We’ll see how that works out. Thanks for the review Mark!

    • @MarkBennettCameraCrisis

      Absolutely- when it comes to work with quick changes - gotta have that zoom. This lens is great when you need a 35 for video and want to take some photos without a huge rig. Really makes me want to take it along to shoot casually (which I can’t say for most of my Sony lenses - ha)

      No, the lens has no stabilization. Would have been nice - but almost all Sony's need a gimbal really. Even with IBIS in the camera and OSS in a lens - I find Sony footage still way too shaky in video (although I have not tried the A7Siii or the FX3).
