From the 1979 album "Communique", their 2nd album, a great tune. This song shows Mark's magnificent writing skills and slow guitar picking style that made him famous. Knopler's unique and super sensitive vocals evoke a vivid imagery that's totally enhanced by the Wexler-Beckett production team. Beautiful base line, smooth melody and masterful guitar vibes make this a perfect song. Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and David 👏👏 Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
Off Dire Straits' second album, Communiqué, this was recorded at Compass Point Studios in Nassau and mixed at Muscle Shoals Sound Studios in Alabama. Produced by Jerry Wexler & Barry Beckett (additional keyboards as well). Nice pick David. Thanks Harri.
My very first DS song, before I even knew the name of the band. Played 24/7 driving my mum crazy. It was several years later, that I heard Alchemy and that's that. 40+ years die hard Knopfler/Dire Straits fan.
The first few times I heard this song I thought it was sort of a throwback to the 'old west' but the lyrics are extremely modern. It's a great juxtaposition of themes. One of my alltime favorite songs by one of my favorite groups.
D.T. - I have admired Mark's unique voice and excellent guitar work. "Once Upon Time in the West" I would recommend to anyone. Well done, David. Harri, You review was spot-on and enjoyable as always.
WOW!!! have been adoring this song for years.. but about 10 years ago.. REALLY STARTED IDOLIZING IT.. like moved way up to the top. I can listen to it over and over.. its so insane what Knopler does on this song.. clearest, most unique some what simple chords.. knocks it out of the park.. MASTERPIECE.. literally could be number one.. its that good.. intense subtle lyrics.. still stunned with this listen.. unreal.. just unreal. First reaction vid i have seen on this song.. MAJOR KUDOS!!!
David, that was great. I took guitar lessons from a guy who was a huge Dire Straits fan, so their music evokes fond memories. I love Harri’s take on the song 🌺✌️
Great choice Harry, and a great reaction! I love how you choose the studio versions. These are how Mark envisioned his creations and breathed life into them, and how singularly epic they are. That isn't to take away from the dynamic live performances, but they suffer from all the imperfections that come with live recording, human and technical, and aren't as polished IMHO. Keep up the good work! Subscribed
The movie of the same title that the song was written for was great too with some very big names including Henry Fonda, Claudia Cardinale, Charles Bronson, Jack Elam, Jason Robarts and many more. Great story about a Bad Guy that kills a young boys father after putting a harmonica in his mouth. Long story short. The boy grows up(Charles Bronson) and hunts down the bad guy Henry Fonda and before he kills him in revenge he put the same harmonica in his mouth so he knows who it is and why.
La tienes que escuchar en directo,es fácil, canción de inicio, alchemy,no necesito tu reacción,es una humilde recomendación para cualquiera que le interese 🍻
Mark should have gone into composing more. I heard one song of his that has a saxophone on it and it was in a movie. It was very short, but sounded really good. It was an instrumental.
Harry, I love your reviews and your style, I just can't afford to join your channel proper. I am living on 100% government disabilty... There is an artist you MUST do a review of. Her songs are completely mesmerizing and you will be hooked once you listen to her. She is a Canadian artist who falls into the "World Music" category. Her name is Lorena McKinnitt. I would recommend the song "The Old Ways" but I could easily rattle off a dozen other songs you use for your first review. Check out the live version and then immediately, after your initial review listen to the studio version off camera and your jaw will just hit the floor... Her live performances are on par with Pink Floyd's Pulse performances...
For years only the live version has been heard, the studio has to admit that this opener has its own differentiated musical magic👍, with Portebello Belle being the best song. In my opinion, the second album DS didn't help, but then two top albums came.
The title of the song is apt. We are now no more in the epoch of the West as Pluto is in Sidereal Capricorn a sign standing for the South -, Australia and South America. The cycle of significance on Earth started in the East in India where the Vedas originate then gtafually the energy went to China (including Japan and South-Easy Asia for different forms of Biddhism) and them the energy went westward to Russia, Eirope, Canada and America (the different gorms of Christianity amd this perood covers Western Asia also which is Islam) and Africa also for tribalistic spirituality after which we are mow in the period of the South- a period where ee live like the junta in South America where might makes right and the Aborigines in Australia seeking guidance from the Cosmos. We are sbout to rnter the East period again whete India rises in Ascendanvy followed by China. And so the cycle goes. Is Kali Yuga (age of strife) really ending and Satya Yuga (age of enlightenment) starting as Dr Pillai from West Malaysia prognosticated?
Not many people can combine reggae, blues & poetry so skillfully in a song like this the way Mark Knopfler did
@really - And an odd tempo...
My favorite guitarist. Unique, inventive, elegant!
I've been a fan for about 40 years. Got to see Mark play in Indianapolis. He was magnificent. So was the crowd.

An overlooked gem. I think my favourite album.
I LOVE the raggae/blues mash up of this song... You even get Marks "precision" finger picking mixed in... Brilliant pick and review...

Every note with a purpose, that's why he is one of the greatest.
May I suggest their song Telegraph Road. It's a masterpiece.
I always loved that fusion of western guitar and a reggae beat. One of my all-time favorites from Dire Straits.
My favorite Dire Straits album 💯
Grew up listening to Mark Knopfler. Brings back memories. Thank you for the request/reaction!
Reportedly, MK wrote this while watching the movie of the same name(a classic western)...while stoned...this partially explains the lyrics
David, that was great. I took guitar lessons from a guy who was a huge Dire Straits fan, so their music evokes fond memories. I love Harri’s take on the song 🌺✌️
Congrats you heard one of the finest early songs in his collection in so many ways. First two LPs are epic. If you find time really good.
Absolutely a guitar masterpiece
Remarkable piece of music off only their second album - the live version on Alchemy makes it even better if that's possible
Always been my fav DS song and album
If you like this, please listen to the Alchemy live veraion (1984)

Glad at least one youtuber was prepared to play it :D If you like this you will also like Water of Love
Magnifico Dire Straits
¡Now, I'm gonna have to go "Google up" = "The Sultans of Swing"!!! (Thanks Harri!)
You now HAVE to watch the Alchemy version of this song !
Should be compulsory 🖤
2nd video today of yours that I did not receive the UA-cam notification for
Alchemy Live version is so full of energy and atmosphere.

You need to check ✔️ out the alchemy version it's amazing 👏
wow
Beautiful up til the very last note.

Great Tune. Harry our musical tastes are so similar. I know you'd love Refugees of the Heart by Steve Winwood. You won't be sorry.
Suggestion: "Home" from the film "Local Hero". Knopfler is a guitar genius.
Unrelated, you should check out the Danish Symphony Orchestras soundtrack of " Once Upon a Time in the West" from the film of the same title.
This song is better in live especially the bass playing
🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉

Always review the live versions when it comes to dire straits, 10 times better
I don't know how many songs with this title are out there, but this surely is not the one I'm familiar with.

North America represents North where the latter branches of Christianity sprang up like the Presbyterian.
waiting for the mouth organ of Charles Bronson! Wrong music I think!
Not it's time for Alchemy version and then 2019 tour one
